Boring vacation, Why don't you join in global volunteering?

3 month that comes every semester, How do you doing? It's special and fruitful time for someone but someone who don't have special plan can be long and boring time. MJP recommend global volunteering to our friends who spend free time. Myongji Univ. of each semester vacation, gathers the selected students and left global volunteering. Heard the stories of people who went global volunteering, they came back with very good memory and recollection. Last summer MJP went to global volunteering, too. Based on the experience introduce in detail about the global volunteering

First, Summer &Winter volunteer work abroad
This global volunteering select applicant March and April in First semester, September and October in Second semester. Build 15 groups of country progressing, for about two weeks (11 and 10 nights) activities. Usually volunteer works in India and Nepal. For details, I hope you found the our school homepage the notice box. We recommend you that you would better creating a resume as soon as pop up the notice. If you pass the resume, you will be interview. Through interview, the second screening, You will be answered the questions based on a resume and interviewed simple English conversation ability. So, before the interviewing you must check the resume and prepare to simple English conversations without a hitch.

If you are selected, the applicants have a meeting for 3 weeks during the vacation after the final exams. The contents of the meeting is mainly about the preparing for education volunteer, having a dance practice for cultural exchange time and choosing the gifts for local people. It will be a valuable activity because the volunteers prepare many things voluntarily and do the works that are given too.

After all the preparation, the applicants go abroad. It will be excited. Also, when they reach and meet the local people, they realize the reality with expecting that something will happen to them. Their main works are house and wall repair and education volunteers. While they get along with the local people, they can experience the local people’s hardships. And they can learn many things by doing the new activities which they never even done before. They can think volunteering for 10 days is long enough, but the time passes quickly than you think and they don’t want to leave that place.

Second, World Friends Service Committee

World Friends Service Committee is global volunteering which is hosted by Korean University Council For Social Service. It detaches the volunteers to Nepal, Mongol and Cambodia. For the final selections, they should be selected either within the school or from the Korean University Council for School Service. World Friends Service Committee prepares longer than the other committee. It takes 150 education times to prepare, so the volunteer’s preparation takes up many parts. However, the features of this committee is, the volunteers can help with different school volunteers in other country. Also, there are no extra tourism plan. It will be posted from September to October, look at the informations carefully and apply it !!!

Third, International Work Camp

If you join the International Work Camp, you can volunteer with youth from all around the world. You will proceed variable work camp project related environment, development, world-peace, architecture, and education. From 10 to 15 young men will be a group per each project, and only 2 or 3 will be korean among them. 20 students will be selected from each campus, Seoul and Yongin. If you want to broaden your international sight, applying IWC will good for you.

After Global Volunteering, It will be great experience to you. Although it was poor surrounding, meomories in their with good people will be unforgettable. The timing is NOW. It can be the last time you can go to Overseas Volunteering. If you didn't have any plan in your vacation yet, How about applying it right now?

Is Myongji University Station is really located in the front of Myongji University?

'Hongik University Staion.' 'Soongsil University Station', "Gwangwoon University'...

You can hear these stations if you are one of passengers who frequently use subway. The station which was named after University can inprint passengers about that area. However, it is argued that there are many universities which are far from correspondant subway stations.

At this time, We can find 26 universities from Line 1 to Line 9 in subway linemaps. Moreover If we consider SInbundang line, Everline and Gyeongchun LIne, about 40 universities are using the name of station as their name of universities. But, Universities are not so close to subway stations that we should use public transportation for a long time.

Like this, some universities are using names that are not even close to the subway stations or two sation names.

So do our university. As many fellow students agree, the distance from Jeungsan station to Myongji Univ. is about 1.7km, It takes 40 minutes on foot.

Then why these universities are wanting to write their names on stations? Do University desire publicity effect by marking their names on Station?

The case of Heukseok station is the main example. There was a sharp conflict at that time of determining station name between Jung-ang Univ. and residents of Heukseok.

There are two aspects that Jung-ang Univ. are speaking the example of development of surrounding business district like Hongik University or Konkuk University, on the other hand, residents of Heukseok are speaking it is a right solution to reveal name of area using station name to develop lag areas.

However, at this moment name of station is finally decided as Heukseok Station.

Moreover, last year‘Seogang station’changed their name successfully into ‘Seogang University Station’. However it caused confusion for the passengers. Because administrative district of‘Seogang station’is located in a Nogosan-dong not a Seogang-dong. In addition, others university’s students came out to the streets and demonstrated for retitle subway station’s name. Commonly, a lot of people think that attend to university which is indicated on subway station’s name increasing the students’self-respect and rate of admission to the university.

Look at the subway maps. These days as you can see, a large number of university are disturbing the people by using the unrelated names. Then, how does the Metro station determines the regulation of marking name of station?

According to the ‘Seoul Metro Station’, they said: “we are not just give a qualification if someone pays the expense, we are reexamining the consideration.”

However, visitors and passengers still feel inconvenience because of the incorrect and irrelevant name of station.

For instance, ‘Chongshin University station’ means its located in entrance of the university. On the contrary, people could arrive by taking a bus for 20 minutes and go more than 2km. Additionally, on similar occasion, ‘Seoul University station’ also have to using another public transportation to get to the university.

But why did they use the unrelated subway station’s name? The reason for this is due to the ‘publicity effect’ and it confused the subway passengers and they experience difficulty. Universities swayed by the pretense and so-called 'take advantage of name value' are invest lots of money in useless things. Furthermore, it does not tangential anything about improving students' skills and learning. From now on we should discuss more about the station’s formal name.

 When we think about any dishes, we usually recall the familiar taste that we tried before in Korea. However, on some occasion of foods from other countries, it is not same with the original food. So, the dishes totally against our expectations can be served, when we order on the ground. Let us look at some cuisines changed in the tastes and the looks when localized.

-Pizza

 Pizza is the symbol of Italian food, and the one of the most-found food by people around the world. In America, especially, the number of American eating pizza is as much as Italian. When the pizza was first introduced to America is the late nineteenth by Italian immigrants from southern Italy. Pizza had a lot of changes just like other Italian food introduced to U.S.A. The word ‘pizza’ put Greek origin ‘pitta’ which means ‘flatly pressed’ or ‘round and flat bread.’ Like this, in Italy, pizza mixture was made thin as far as possible, and cooked crisply. However, it was bigger to suit American taste that think much of amount of food and oilier being covered with plenty of toppings with meat and cheese as the center.

-Carbonara spaghetti

 Most Korean usually think carbonara as a white creamy pasta. In this way, carbonara become the symbol of cream pasta, and is being on sale like that at most restaurants. However, carbonara in Italy is a totally different dish from cream pasta. The carbonara as we knew well is Americanized, and made with cream and bacon. but, the Italian carbonara in the traditional way is very dry, and made only with ham, salted bacon, stock and egg. Originally, the word ‘carbonara’ is derived from Italian word ‘carbone’ meaning coal miner. The coal miners in the Appennini mountain developed the dish that can be ate for a long time with salted meat and egg as the center ingredients, because they have to stay for a while in mine once entering. Carbonara with fresh cream we commonly encountered is American way. After World War II, many Italian moved to America, it changed in the taste.

-Black-bean-sauce noodles (Jajangmyeon)

In fact, most of representative Chinese cuisines were changed to suit Korean sentiment and taste. For example, Korean like chewy noodle, but Chinese think elastic and chewy  noodle is miscooked. So, Jajangmyeon’s noodle was changed to be fit for Koreans who love chewy texture. In China, they read it ‘Zhajiangmian.’ The real Zhajiangmian was frequently found by the lower class, and put chunjang up a little, so it has nearly white color. Korean jajangmyeon is changed for Korean appetite putting vegetables and meat by overseas Chinese settling down in Korea when making up the China town in Incheon.

-Curry

 The English word ‘curry’ is originated from the Tamil ‘kari,’ and ‘kaleh’(カレー) as we speak is Japanese accent. In India, curry is not a proper noun that means the specific sauce, but the collective name of soup and sauce cuisines mixed with various ingredients and spices. So, a specific powder like curry powder does not exist at all. However, Korean see curry as a dish in it with specific sauce, meat, and vegetables, the curry rice. Then why is that? When India was colonized by the British, English paid attention to the fact that Indian cooked any food using curry sauce. So may English people wanted to eat curry, but it had too strong scent to get used to. Along the way, an English food company developed curry powder, so English loved eating since then. Through England on which the sun never sets, curry spreaded to the whole country. In the late nineteenth century, Japan that imported English curry power, was awkward to include powder to beef stew because Asian lived off rice not like Westerner. So, they ate rice covered with curry sauce, and it came to Korea. In India, they call every sauce including spices curry even though there is no ‘curry’ to name. And some cuisines named curry is not like a soup, but a dry one.

 So the taste and shape of many various food from other counties have changed being spreaded. If the name changed at the same time, there is no need to be confused, but unfortunately most food’s name does not. If you want experience what is different from the dish in Korea, it would be alright to order the cuisine that has same name. However, don’t make a mistake to order with the expectation to the same taste.

Students' word usage

University student is adult after they were middle and high school students in past. They are now from early 20s to late 20s. After 10s, would they speak language that is appropriate for adults? It is easy to see that university students speak incorrect language. They use erroneous language from small things.

There are some ways knowing one’s character. That is one’s friends and parents. The easiest way to knowing character is language from the mouths. Language presents one’s personality. Own words and speed of talking mark a personality and subject of conversation shows one’s now interests.

Abbreviation as well as rough words become the topic. But, is it right to see abbreviation as only bad word? Using abbreviation and consonant word might part of youth culture. For example, young people call ‘the most beautiful’ as ‘se jel ye’.

Also, they use ‘ㅇㅈ’ (It means acknowledgement.) when they reply to empathizing post.

But it is obvious that people not sharing the words have difficult understanding, it is wrong that the words are excluded and banned. Of course abbreviation is not only right like abusive language. But, university students need to abstain from rough languge such as swear word first.

Here is the university students' usage of language that MJP researched.

A. Very much / Quite yes / Normal / Quite no / Not at all

Q. If you use incorrect words, why do you use it?

A. To express rage / Friends use it / Did not correct the habit of school days / Want to seem to be strong / Etc

Q. If you do not use incorrect words, what made you not to use it?

A. Not necessary / Realized after becoming adult / Pressure or advice of acquaintance / Self-conscious / Etc

University students' usage of language is hard to definitely beg the question. It is impossible to classify their usage dividing ages, sex and more. It is not the fact that man usually use more slang than woman and the early twenties use more coarse expressions because they are young. It has nothing to do with sex and age, even external factors like impression from their appearance. It is because personal value, influence of acquaintance, situation faced are dominant.

University students who passed adolescence need to use good words. Students using incorrect words have to let others be a lesson to you. In this famous saying, you are the 'others.' Others' fault is a great help to your develop. Although you usually use rough expressions and incorrect words, you will definitely reflect on your words when you are faced with third person who are like you. For example, however someone has perfect external qualification, image of that person will definitely decline if he or she expresses rough words. While, although somebody is normal-looking, many people think highly of that person if he or she uses beautiful words. Words have strong power. As well as 20s, students need to try to keep using good words for your left beautiful life.

Journey to Daegu

What comes to your mind when you think of Daegu? People may come up with the hottest city in the summer, the city located in Gyeongsang-do and more. Daegu subway is composed of 3 lines and the line number 3 is a magnetic levitation train called sky rail. This magnetic levitation train is Korea's first form of public transportation; monorail. It has different attractions from subway. In addition, there are many special places where people can enjoy only in Daegu. MJP would offer our university students these places.

1. Sinnam Station

Take exit 1 of Sinnam Station on subway line No 2. Walk about 10 minutes, then you can find entrance of Sumun market. Sumun market is the biggest market in Daegu and it represents Daegu.

1. Monnani topokki

It sells spicy rice cake with Korean sausage. When people first saw it, they doubt whether it is delicious. Once you taste it, it is so delicious that you cannot stop eating.

2. Miseongdang's flat dumpling

Flat dumpling is only in Gyeongsang-do. It is taste better when you try it with topokki. It seems to taste like flour. However, it is perfectly crisp and great combination with bun stuffing

3. Samgyeopsal jajangmyeon

People can taste it at 5,000 won. Samgyeopsal is on the black-bean-sauce noodles(jajangmyeon) and also it is only in Daegu. Many people visit here and represent Sumun market.

2. Kyungpook Nat'l Univ. Hosp. Station

Kim Kwang-seok retrace-gil.

Kim Kwang-seok's songs stimulate people's sensitivity. Lots of his song, such as 'At the Age of Thirty,' 'The Private's Letter' and more, has been receiving a lot of love from his fans. In addition, he is a senior in our university.

Come out the exit 3 of Kyungpook Nat'l Univ. Hosp. Station and go straight. Then you will find Bangcheon market. From this place, walk a bit more and turn right. Now you can see Kim Kwang-seok gil. While walking, people could hear his famous songs. His figures are painted on the wall of this road. Also his lyrics of the songs are drawn with various paintings. Along this road, people might feel they go back to the past when he was alive. There are some photo zones and you can leave unforgettable memories.

3. Igok Station

A Igok Fountain Park nearby Igok Station is full of the scent of beautiful roses in May to June. When you walk out of exit 6 for about 10 minutes, you can find Igok Fountain Park. A rose garden in the park is nice place of couple’s dating. Because May to June is time for the roses, you had better to go there before June is finished.

If you stand beside rosese, you could smell the flowers and feel better. You could get good photos if you take photos with beautiful roses. You may get the best photo of life.

4. Gangchang Station

-Metasekwaieo way, Dalseoung Wetland.

After about 5 minutes of walking from exit 3 of Gangchang Station, you will arrive at Metasekwaieo way. The way is about length of 1km and is visited by many people in nice weather. A scene between a long column of trees feels as mysterious.

If you visit in summer, you could purify your sprit while you see a lots of green trees.

Walking the way for several minute, you can meet a Dalseoung Wetland. Dalseoung Wetland is located in region at the confluence of rivers. If you go there in summer, you can see that Calliopsis present a grand sight. It is opportunity that you can purify your mind and feel the nature escaping from forest of building.

With KTX, you can reach Daegu from Seoul in about two hours. It is also fine that you go an overnight trip to Daegu. Why don’t you go to remote area greeting summer vacation? If you travel to Daegu, you can enjoy its own charms such as flat dumplings and ground rail. Infuse fresh atmosphere in your routine traveling to Daegu.

A One-man Media which Changed the World

Unlike in the past, each of people can express own views on web. Because memedia through Youtube and Africa TV as well as blog and facebook is appearing.

People talk what they want and watch videos that they like through memedia.

In the past, people just received contents in web. But now, people make contents themselves. Let's look at memedia that become common in our daily lives.

The memedia is that individuals make contents personally and upload through various channels.

memedia's appearance

Appearance of memedia has a close relation to generalization of smart phone. Because we could write, flim and edit contents, if we have only smart phone.

With the beginning of Youtube, localized video platform in web is appearing in the entire world. People don't upload made contents but are able to broadcast in a real-time.

In 2007, Ustream that is personal internet broadcationg platform started in America. As Ustream is a combination of the words Ubiquitous and streaming, it means that it is streaming anywhere and at anytime. While Barack Obama used Ustream as political campaign, not only Ustream but a real-time video streaming service began to grab the attention of media market.

If there is Ustream in the United State, there is Afirica TV in korea. The Africa TV can broadcast through webcams or PC camera in real-time. Also, broadcasters can communicate with viewers actively. It is operated by the way that broadcaster initiatively decides a content that will be broadcasted. This way became framework of My Little Television on MBC.

As memedia broadcasting has been figured on the internet, domestic portals begin introducing concept of 'memedia' and 'live' in itself. Naver is proud to present 'V app'. It is live video that is aired by famous celebrities. Also, Daum pot TV that is 10 year old creates a boom recently.

Who is a memedia star?

-Banzz

Eating show is first thing that comes to mind when you hear 'memedia'.

Banzz is popular eating show star in Afica TV. Although he has skinny body, he eats a lot of foods. Expanding range of food menu, he has gathering lots of viewers.

-GreatLibrary

The GreatLibrary is known as 'Youtube's Yoo Jeaseok.' He has broadcasting funny theme of game playing, pets and so on. His channel has grown to have more than a million viewrs.

-Ssinnim

Ssinnim is called 'Beauty entertainer' in Youtube. She is creator who introduce her own makeup style on video. Her clever talk and video's funny caption made her popular between young women.

memedia's merits and limits

Thanks to advent of memedia platform, positive changing is appearing in cultural and social aspect. Memedia improved interaction of users than traditional media. It has big power of influence because rates of spreading of information is fast by smartphone.

In the past, media is based upon text such as cyworld minihompage, blog. But now, memedia based on video is developing. As this memedia provides new contents that didn't exist in the past, it has enable broadcasters to make a profit through memedia. In the case of Africa TV, viewers present items that can be exchanged to money to broadcaster. In this way, it let them get a profit through broadcasting. It is effet on creating BJ(Broadcasting Jockey) who broadcasts as major job in web and spreading it.

Memedia has charming point that individuals have personal space and they can communicate easily in web. Although memedia cannot replace humman connection, it can complement relationship. Also, individuals post their idea freely in web and make public opinion space through memedia.

However, memedia has weakness that it provides false information easily. Because users accept without question sometimes, it is dangerous to get not true information. Therefore, users need to watch memedia telling critically it.

Also, it looked mature aspect of morals. One recent example involved that KOMCA canceled contract with Africa TV last January. Because Africa TV infringed copyright in music broadcasting. We need to care about copyright when we produce memedia.

In 2004, Tim O'Reilly who representative of O’reilly Media, Inc. announced 'web 2.0'. This concept involves prediction about changing the Internet world. Beyond 'web 1.0' era when it just showed information gathered, now is 'web 2.0' era that users handle data directly.

From the times that media simply conveyed news, it reaches that individuals produce and process news. Memedia continuously produce various contents that fascinate users. Why don't you produce memedia with your own subject through memedia channels?

What comes to mind when you first think of the border of country. Because our country is the only divided nation in the world, people will think of soldier, gun and line that they cannot cross.

Would other countries' border be like this? Other countries differ from Korea's border. Unlike the nation, it is easy to see border that doesn't have wire. Let's look at countries that has not the wire but usual line as their border.

The United States - Mexico

In their border, there are people who play volleyball across the border. Because of low border, it is used to volleyball net. People enjoy sports freely on opposite sides of the border.

The left side of this photo is Mexico and right side is The United States. The two countries coexist and enjoy each other like above photo, but they show the polar opposite of appearance.

While Mexico looks a little pastoral scenery, The United States shows representative appearance of big city that is crowded with buildings. Actually, people said that if you pass the border, you feel difference of two countries immediately.

Netherlands-Belgium

 This place is a one of cafés where it is located in baarle. If you walk only a step, you will be in other country. The crisscross pattern in the photo is the border. There is notparticular device and the white sign is all of the border.

Baarle is known for having the most complicated border in the world. You can move to Netherlands and Belgium countless times a day. Baarle is located in Netherlands’ border and 22 Belgium regions exist in the village. The village was named Baarle-Nassau in Netherlands and Baarle-Hertog in Belgium.The border crosses some houses’ living room or garden.Even though people live in same building, they may pay the tax to other country each other.

 At once, Netherlands’restaurant must close before Belgium’s closing time. Each time in restaurant across the border, guests move to a part of restaurant that is located in Belgium region.

Poland-Ukraine

One road is the border between Poland and Ukraine. Two countries make the border fun. Like the photo, looking at it from a distance, you can see two fishes across the border.These fishes see a different side and look like quite activation. People in the village cultivate as shape of fishes and the border is crossing the middle. It is part of a exhibition in 2012.

Slovakia-Hungary-Austria

The border of three countries is divided to triangle table. One triangle table in green meadows present the border.Three countries is spread from sides of the triangle. If you talk with friends on the table’s sides, amazing scenery that you talk in different countries is formed. The situation that they can go back and forth between three countries compare with Korea.

Sweden-Norway

There is white sign that is written with Sweden and Norway on the road. It is all that there is only one line between two countries. The sidewalk right next is installed without any divice to have people walk. It is no more than normal border and doesn’t examine passport when people cross the border.

Spain-Portugal

 People can move to Portugal riding a rope in Spain. It is interesting that people can go to other country with exciting way. People can cross the border without a person who stand guard as if we cross a city line in Korea. Another interesting aspect is moved back by one hour if you cross the river. Because Portugal uses same time with England.

China-Pakistan

The border between China and Pakistan is famous for the highest border in the world. Two countries face each other with Khunjerab Pass that is hill in 4,500m above sea level between them. People travelling this place pain with altitude sickness due to the high altitude. Two countries is divided with not wire but sign rock.Although the border line is not strict, people can move to other country after toughly checked.

Above border is feature free atmosphere than our country. Korea has the broadest border line and Demilitarized Zone is 4km.South and North Korea is absolutely separated despite same ethnic roots.

As the borders in above contrast with Korea, it reminds of painful past. MJP hopes that our country will have more flexible border and the border is disappear in the future.

Emigration of 20s

‘Emigration fever’ which swept Korea about 10 years ago is sweeping again in our society. Only difference is the age of emigrants. In the early 2000s, there were emigrations of middle-class in their 40s because of economic depression. In contrast, now, there are emigrations of 20s who will lead country’s future. They create ‘gye’ to make a big sum of money, and make a study group that can share information and learn language. Like this, young people who make elaborate plan are on the increase.

What made them leave? The reason mere beginners emigrate to advanced country is simple. The system such as raising the tuition, reducing pension benefit, high house prices set by older generation makes the young generation more and more disadvantageous. Public tendency that is frequent overtime, depression, worsen stress, constant competitive society has helped boost it. Of course, there could be another reasons in some cases. However, uncertainty about the future and economic situation are the main reasons. As world become more globalized and barrier between countries has disappeared, fear of new environments such as language is not as big as before. Therefore, people want a better life under more favorable environments and systems. So, they eventually decide to emigrate. In practice, an online job-search site, 'Saram-in,' surveyed 1655 adult men and women to learn about emigration and they found that 78% of people responded that they want to emigrate. They answered that it is because of poor work conditions, income inequality, anxiety of security for the aged, competitive atmosphere, desire to enjoy welfare system of advanced countries and more. 20s desire to emigrate is expression‎ of frustration with social reality in Korea. Korea has rigid social order which is hard to move a step up in society although they struggled. So it caused great consternation to 20s.

Mere beginners who dream emigrating prefer Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Denmark, and more known for a welfare state. For example, Ms. Kim has served a security company after she graduated a prestigious university located in Seoul. She organized a fraternity to make a sizeable amount of money and settle down in Finland that is welfare state leaving Korea with 3 of her friends. They all graduated best university and have a decent job like bank, a security company, electronics company, and shipping company. Ms. Kim said, "I will be accepted to a graduate program in Finland and settle down there. Unlike Korea, I can take my time after leaving the office. In addition to this, there are some people who learn new skills to emigrate and work in welfare state. For instance, after graduated Seoul national university, Mr. Kim worked in the human resources department of a large company. But, he went to academy and was trained in automobile maintenance every weekends to emigrate to Scandinavian countries by obtaining certificate in automobile maintenance. People can easily get a green card than general emigration if they have a certification of skill-emigration. Academy's official related said that the high educated from who received Ph.d in economics at Oxford and Cambridge university to Seoul national university graduates attempt welder-emigration.

Overseas expansion of society mere beginners is to be welcomed considering that today is the globalized world, but it is important not to leave thoughtlessly. Because emigration is not a simple thing like going to the next door or hanging out with friends. To emigrate, getting a green card and citizenship is necessary but it is easier said than done. Now many countries strengthen emigration conditions. So if someone decide to emigrate, advance preparation is required. But it is specific case that emigration for technical position can live well. Also, there is no reason that developed countries have to employ Korean youths, so careful choice is needed.

It is a reasonable behavior that young people move to the countries where they can be guaranteed benefits and stability. Therefore, not to lose our country’s young talents, institutional control is required. Setting national, social measures to overcome unstable state of our society is way to prevent escape emigration and recover nation’s trust. Establishing countermeasures for 20 years later, rather than thinking efficiency for now is required. Also, companies should break down bad practice and gain a foothold for competent young people who have high language ability and have no unwelcome attention of foreign culture. Then, they can play an active part in business section.

Young people who decided to leave Korea maybe think ‘should I leave to live better life with better condition?’ With this question, current society should give present generation a chance to take one step forward. Now is a time to have a consideration that ‘how can our country be a country that want to live in?’ With unstinted investments for young people, society that all generation coexist and desirable competent society with fair chance and rule can be possible.

 You guys may make a plan to set out on a overseas trip on this summer vacation. For Myongji University students who have never been to any countries, or are not familiar with travel yet, MJP will introduce the way that you can buy flight ticket at a reasonable price, and some checklists needed when traveling.

1. Use App!

 Once your destination is decided, download airlines’s app to your phone and search for low-cost flights. It will make you buy cheaper plane ticket. If fortune smiles upon you, business class seats can be sold at a economy class seat’s cost. So, pay attention to airlines’s app.

2. Use national flag carrier when Southeast Asia traveling

 There are a lot of events about special discount and accommodation. Also, you can sometimes get a discount at city traffic and meal when you use your destination’s national flag carrier.

ex) Indonesia : Garuda Indonesia , Philippine : Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific Air

3. Go soon for the good seat!

 If you can’t book the desired seat, going 5 hours earlier than issuing time is a good plan. When you ask seat next to emergency exit or in the forefront, they generally comply with request.

4. Use a low-cost airline

 A low-cost airlines are low-cost as their name, and also hold events frequently. However, be careful. There are cases that not a few users made a loss because ticket can't be canceled.

5. Use mileage

 If you use only one airline consistently when traveling, the mileages are accumulated. you can upgrade the seats or buy the flight tickets cheaper by using it.

6. The low-cost chance differ with countries.

Usually, booking airling ticket 19 weeks before departure is the cheapest, and a trip on November is cheaper than any months.

1. passport/visa/plan ticket : Check the departure, homecoming date, journey, and expiration date for certain. And in preparation for loss, make a copy of the front page with your picture, and keep in different place with passport.

2. Korean money : for transportation expenses when moving between airports and paying airport tax.

3. traveler’s check : Surely make your signature, and change money at the rate of 7:3(money 7:traveler’s check 3).

4. a travel insurance card : There is no need to prepare when a group tour. But in the case of free independent travel, it is better to prepare to deal with accidents.

5. International student ID &  International Driver's License : International student ID card has a lot of discount benefits for students. And if you travel by rental car, prepare the International Driver’s License with driver’s license.

6. spare pictures : prepare 2~3 pictures against loss of passport.

7. phone card : If you have a lot of work to call Korea, it is better to purchase in advance.

8. portable umbrella : In the case of raining or rainy season, telescopic umbrella is easy to carry.

9. dryer : In some cases, there is no dryer at hotel. So check voltage and plug, and take it. Plug can usually be rented at hotel.

10. razor : Hotel sometimes furnish a single-use, but it is good to prepare. If using electricity, check the voltage and plug.

11. jacket / cardigan : when airplane air conditioning, raining or at night, there is differnce of temperature. So prepare the lighter one.

12. Sanitary napkin : It is not easy and usually expensive to get on the ground, it is good to prepare.

13. first-aid medicine : currently-taken medication, antidiarrhea, digestive medicine, antinauseant, restorative drink, band-aid, and etc.

14. present : Take some present to introduce Korean culture or gift to close friend.

15. Korean food : If you can’t adjust well to foreign food, prepare tube packing red pepper paste(gochujang).

 Until now, we talk about the way that can lower the plane ticket which is the most taxing, and checklists needed when traveling, from a minor thing to a necessity. Fashion: Another Language Expressing Us

‘I wear, therefore I am.’ Have you ever listened this phrase? It is transshaped form of ‘i think, therefore I am’ which is phrase of Descartes, the founder of modern philosophy. Clothes was tools for hiding human’s body in the past, but now role of clothes is changing and used for express one’s personality. Many people are expressing themselves through wearing different clothes, and talking with clothes. So MJP did interviews to listen their thinkings.

Um Hee-soo, Junior, Dept. of Systems Management Engineering, Seokyeoung University.

1. Please explain your concept

The concept of this fashion is ‘spring date fashion when meet boy friend.’ Spring is the most exciting season for me, so I wear pink t-shirt and lace skirt to make boy friend excite. I prepared jacket for chilly weather at evening.

2. Is there any strength or shortcoming with fashion?

The strength of considering fashion is that I can always have romance about fashion. Because I like to buy clothes and dress up. So I expect boyfriend’s response. Shortcoming is that I spend much money to buy clothes. And repeating same clothes is hard so it is hassle for me to think of style.

3. Fashion style that want to try someday

I want to try long skirt. Because I am short, so it is hard for me to wear a long skirt. So long skirt is always my wish.

Kim Ye-rin, Sophomore, Dept. of English Language and Literature, Hanyang University

1. 1. Please explain your concept

I want to show natural university student’s style rather than specific concept. Because ‘not too much’ is what I pursue. In this plain style, I wear a white skirt to as a point.

2. Is there any strength or shortcoming with fashion?

The strength is fashion can be one of the means to express myself. And as I also have interest in it, my self esteem also increased I guess. People look beautiful when they wear clothes that fit them well. Shortcoming is that it can occur excessive consumption. In this month, I spend 100,000 won.

3. Fashion style that want to try someday

I want to try feminine style from head to toe. Floral printed dress and lace skirt can be examples. Because I cannot wear those kind of style in daily life. Because I pursue comfortable style when go to the school!

Lee Ye-rim, Junior, Dept. of Fashion design

1. Please explain your concept

My fashion concept is 'wiriting.' I am wearing loose and enough Acne jacket and a pair of hose(long socks). Especially, printing, 'ACNE STUDIOS' behind jacket sets my figure to perfection. My bag's brand is 'Freitag' and this bag is also used alphabet printing. My jacket and bag have one thing in common that using big alphabet.

2. Is there any strength or shortcoming with fashion?

Tidying myself is just complacency because I love clothes. I usually have my eyes on clothes so I tend to impulse buy clothes at online and offline store. However, I don't need to care much about it because I purchase clothes which are long wearing in fabric and functions.

3. Fashion style that want to try someday

I used to buy comfortable clothes such as loose and enough sweatshirt and hooded t-shirt. And I prefer hose and sneakers. So my overall fashion is casual. However, this year, I want to try tennis skirt which is girlish style and denim suspender skirt that is cute style.

1. Please explain your concept

I think hanbok should be comfortable so that people often choose to wear it as daily dress. I usually wear life hanbok. Also people do not have to wear hanbok as a whole. I sometimes put on hanbok and daily dress to match. So, I usually choose jeogori and one-piece or shirt and hanbok dress.

2. Is there any strength or shortcoming with fashion?

The strength of hanbok fashion is eye-catching. These days, people wearing hanbok have increased. But, it is still unfamiliar to ordinary person. Many people usually stared at me and they talked in whispers. But, they just thought that hanbok I wore was pretty and wondered about information of hanbok. Wearing hanbok has become a medium of communication with people.

3. Fashion style that want to try someday

I want to try to wear more Korean styled traditional Korean clothes in daily lives. I have one traditional Korean clothes and I wore it only in Europe. I have never worn it in Korea. So, I want to have confidence and try to wear it here.

Fashion became a tool for expressing personality beyond a simple clothes or accessory. It is generation that expresses you through clothes. Fashion has changed its meaning that language which can understand world and me. It is time to express your own individuality.

Adopt, Don’t Buy

It is 10 million of dog lover generation. When you look around, we can easily see that considerable number of people raise the dog. But some dog lover’s undesirable value, there are so many abandoned dogs along the road. Some people bought young and cute dog at first, but as it gets old and sick or loses hair, they abandon the dog like throwing things away. Ironically, however, when we search on the Internet there are many posts that sell and advertise dogs. Not only reservation of popular dog breeds but also instalment and discount are prevailed and it is treated like industrial products. Popular breeds that created a boom for a while are now can be seen easily as abandoned.

There are specific breeds that created a boom for a while. Long-hair chihuahua which appeared the program ‘Three Meals for Three Times,’ and ‘sangkeuni,’ a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, also known as a Great Pyrenees, which appeared the program ‘1 Night 2 Days’ can be examples. People wanted to buy those kinds of dogs and even could not buy them because of the lack of those breeds. At first, they bought it because of the only reason, ‘they are cute,’ but as they were tired of raising dog, threw away dogs. Then what fate abandoned dogs encounter after they are kicked out on the street?

Abandoned dogs are sent to a dog shelter throughout the country. There are 360 of municipal dog shelters. Abandoned dogs in this shelter are waiting for their owner for 10 days, or waiting for new owner. But their real owner does not appear in 10 days, according to the animal protection law, city or province take ownership of the abandoned and it can be handled with humanitarian way. Humanitarian way in this context means euthanasia. Because there are many abandoned animals, but cost for maintenance of shelter is limited. Abandoned animals are increasing year by year and its number is over one hundred thousand. Surprisingly, half of them are abandoned dogs. The number of abandoned dogs that appeared for the past year was about 60,000 and about 20000 of them were euthanized. Considering dogs that dead from illness, half of abandoned dogs are lost their life.

With the situation that abandoned dogs are increasing, ironically, so called ‘dog factory’ is dominating. Dog factory brings dogs and makes them breed deliberately. Dogs in this factory, they stay behind iron bars so sole’s of their feet fester and eat rotten food. Breeding area is based on artificial insemination and inbreeding because consumers prefer small and pretty dogs like a doll. Generable number of one mother dog is 40. Mother dogs constantly bear young like that and as their health worsen, they are dragged to slaughterhouse. New born baby dogs cannot be fed well, because to satisfy consumer’s taste, they have to be small. And this baby dogs that be raised in unsanitary place and are unhealthy, are sold to pet shop or online shop. As consumers of the pet shop increase, the number of baby dog that mother dog have to breed is also increased. The number of dog factory is about 3000, but the number of legally notified dog factory is only 50. For this, amendment of animal protection law has proposed, but it has remained as a pending problem.

The reasons why people throw away their pets can be economical reason, health problem or lack of responsibility. At first, people buy dogs because of its cute look but its look changes as they grow that is different from initial imagination, and they throw away dogs. This can be a reason too. We say to people who abandon dogs “Do not raise a dog if you do not afford to raise it.” But most of people who abandoned dogs do not think that ‘i will abandon these dogs’ from the beginning. Of course at first, they could afford to raise a dog or had a reason to raise them. On the contrary, we can say that lack of educational system of being a dog lover is a fundamental reason. Basic knowledge which is required to be with dogs is not enough for them.

To set up Korea’s mature pet culture, education that makes pet owners feel responsible with their pets. There are few educational institution that teaches how to understand and induce dog’s nature habit. And education of responsibility is also needed. Yet, in Korea, there are many people that call themselves an expert, but actually they did not learn manual well. So to set a mature pet culture, establishing educational system that teaches all about the dog for pre-owners and understanding rather than educating is required first. Also, improvement of recognition that prefers small and pure-blooded dog is required to prevent unethical fact like dog factory. Because dog factory starts with the wrong criteria of consumers. It is axiomatic that if we do not buy dogs from dog factory, we can stop it. To prevent preval‎ence and spread of dog factory, cracking down on undeclared dog factory is required and system for administering them should be expanded. And inspection of dog shelter’s sanitary condition is needed too. If the shelter operates well, it can reduce bias about abandoned dogs and also leads to effort of adoption expansion culture. Eventually, awakening towards fundamental problems is needed for human’s friend dogs.

There is no perfect person and of course, there is no perfect dog. Dog who suits only for yourself and behaves as you want, is same as a robot. Dogs are not products which depend on consumer tastes but cherish life. An also, they are not means of business or things that can be thrown away. Acknowledge dogs as real family, and be qualified as responsible owner are important attitude to become a dog lover. Let’s adopt, do not buy. Dogs are family of human.

Rio 2016!

One of the largest sports events on the planet, Olympic. It only comes every four years! In 2016, August, Oylmpic will be held in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Isn’t it amazing that Olympic that we have been waiting for will be held soon? To make readers enjoy Rio Olympic perfectly, MJP will introduce everything about Rio Olympic.

Olympic introduction

Rio de Janeiro is the first city that host the Olympic Games in 122 years after the launch of IOC(International Olympic Committee). Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is called as one of the three most beautiful ports with Napoli in Italy, and Sydney in Australia, and the time difference with Korea is 12 hours. Brazil greet a happy occasion once again hosting World Cup in 2014 followed by Olympics in 2016. 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is scheduled to take place over the span of 17 days from August 8th to 21st. A total of 10,500 athletes in 206 countries will have international competitions pinning 306 medals in 42 sports throughout the Olympics. Unlike 2012 London Olympics, 4 golden medals are added and golf and rugby newly become formal subjects in 112 years and 92 years, respectively. The Paralympics which is hosted after Olympics will take place from September 7^thto September 18th. Also this time, 70 thousands volunteers will be selected, 45 thousands being put in the Summer Olympics and 25 thousands in the Paralympics.

Emblem Introduction

The emblem of 2016 Rio Olympics which green, blue, and orange people are taking each other’s hands, is based on the Pão de Açucar model, the famous hill in Rio de Janeiro. It represents the Olympic spirit, national teams, Rio de Janeiro, the true character, sensitivity, and aspiration of carioca tune. The peculiarity of this emblem is that it is possible to be in three dimensions.

Mascot Introduction

The mascots of 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Paralympics are ‘Tom’ and ‘Vinicius.’ They are selected by three weeks of people’s voting, so have a deeper meaning. ‘Vinicius and Tom’ named after the famous singer-songwriter, Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Yellow Vinicius embodies the animal and represents various wild animals in Brazil. Green and blue Tom’s head is covered with leaves, and represents plentiful plant world. About 70 goods related to Rio Olympic Games will be launched, and it is forecasted that the sales reach a billion Brazilian real(about 414 billion won). And 25% of sales will be the products using mascot. The Mascot is not forgotten over time, and in people’s recollection for a long while. It makes people recall that time, so there are great expectations this times, too.

Korea’s Expected Events

-Golf

Golf is back on the Olympic menu. Golf will be contested for the first time in 112 years. Especially, in this contest, there will be so many golf stars who are spotlighted in PGA, LPGA. So people have expectations with Park In-be who marked her seventh consecutive majors title.

-Archery

Archery is a trusty event in the Olympics where our country wins many medals. And in this Olympic, Ki Bo-bae who won the gold medal in London 2012, will try second straight win. And if she succeed, she will be the first athlete who achieve the second consecutive titles in Archery.

-Taekwondo

Many people also expect for the Taekwondo which is Korea’s traditional sports. Lee Dae-hoon, who won the silver medal in London will challenge a grand slam again in Rio. Now, he is ranked on the top of the world ranking. He was born in year of the monkey, and 2016 is year of the monkey, so he showed a special determination.

-Shooting

Korean shooting star Jin Jong-oh will participate in Olympic for the fourth. Many people expect that he will do well because he has been resulted very high score with lots of medals. He already have world records in two event.

-Track

In Korea, track event is weak compared to other events. Track has won few medals in Olympic games, and supporting for track events are poor relatively. In Rio Olympic, however, Kim Kook-young will participate in sprint race for the first time as a Korean. He is a well-known runner in Asia, so let’s cheer for him.

Festival of the world, Olympic is time to begin. Give a big clap to all the athletes who has dropped tears and sweats waiting for four years. Let's cheer for the athletes who do a active role in a far away land, Brazil. Olympic makes one.
