가치전도

사람의 마음은 자신의 생각과 말과 행한 일을 유리한 쪽으로 이해하고 기억하는 경향이 있습니다. 곧 사실에 대한 취사선택과 선별적 기록이 우리의 생각속에서 자동으로 일어난다는 것입니다. 그래서 시시비비를 가릴 때 양 쪽의 말을 다 들어야한다고 합니다.

하나님과의 관계에서도 사람들은 이런 합리화, 정당화 기질을 십분 발휘합니다. 오히려 하나님의 진노와 심판을 비합리적인 처사라고 원망하기까지 합니다. 그러나 여기에는 한가지 간과한 점이 있습니다. 하나님의 판단과 사람의 판단은 비교할 수 없는 가치와 격의 차이가 있습니다. 어린아이가 부모의 심정을 이해하지 못하고 편식하고 사탕 달라고 떼쓰는 것 같은 모양새입니다. 주님께서 우리에게 좋은 것을 주시려고 제정한 율법을 마음대로 어기고 개의치 않으면서 하나님께서 불공정한 심판을 내린다고 비난하고 있습니다.

가인은 동생을 죽인 후 하나님의 자비를 구합니다. 그리고 이마에 표를 받습니다. 이 사건은 하나님의 공의가 왜곡된 것처럼 보이지만 그 이면에는 하나님의 자비가 드러난 사건입니다. 이스라엘을 망국의 길로 이끌고도 말년에 회개한 아합과 므낫세도 모두 그의 살아생전에는 재앙를 보지 않겠다는 약속을 받습니다. 이것은 곧 회개하는 자에게 베푸시는 하나님의 자비에 근거한 것입니다.

여기서 우리가 하나님의 공의가 어디에 있냐고 항의한다면 그것은 우리 발밑의 사다리를 걷어차는 행동과도 같습니다. 우리 역시 심각한 죄의 결과에 노출되어 있고 자비외에는 재앙을 피할 길 없는 똑같은 죄인이라는 것입니다. 공의를 주장하는 사람은 자신이 죄인들보다 낫다는 우월감에 도취되어 있습니다. 아무도 죽음과 죄의 권세로부터 자유롭지 못하며 십자가 보혈 공로와 예수 이름 외에는 구원 얻을 만한 이름주신 일이 없음을 기억해야 합니다.

이런 근본적이고 본질적인 하나님과 인간의 건널 수 없는 강과 같은 차이에도 불구하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하고 불평하는 것은 개인의 선택의 영역입니다. 순히 매를 맞고 회개의 자리로 나아가는 사람이 있는가하면 반항하고 분노하며 거칠게 항의하는 사람도 있습니다. 그리고 그 선택에 대한 결과는 각자의 몫입니다. 광야에서 원망과 불평하던 사람들은 다 모래위에 엎드러지고 믿음과 용기로 무장한 젊은 세대만 가나안의 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅으로 들어간 것을 기억하셔야 합니다.

주님은 우리와 지금도 변론하시며 완악한 인간의 마음을 바라보시고 한탄하고 계십니다. 기쁨과 순전한 마음으로 그의 사랑을 사모하며 그의 은혜에 감격하고 늘 감사하는 삶을 살도록 인도하시는 아버지의 마음을 아프게 하는 생각과 말과 행동을 멈춰야 합니다. 그것이 곧 우리 영혼의 유익과 평안과 형통의 복을 덧입는 비결이자 기회입니다.

The Distortion of Values

The human mind tends to understand and remember its thoughts, words, and actions in a way that is favorable to itself. This means that our minds automatically engage in selective interpretation and recording of facts. That is why it is said that when discerning right from wrong, one must hear both sides of the story.

Even in their relationship with God, people fully exercise this tendency to rationalize and justify themselves. Some even resent God's wrath and judgment as irrational measures. However, there is one crucial point often overlooked: there is an incomparable difference in value and stature between God's judgment and human judgment. It is like a child who does not understand their parents' feelings, picky eating, or throwing tantrums for candy. We freely break the laws the Lord established for our own good, paying them no mind, and then accuse God of unfair judgment.

After killing his brother, Cain sought God's mercy and received a mark on his forehead. This event might seem to distort God's justice, but beneath it, God's mercy was revealed. Ahab and Manasseh, who led Israel to ruin, also received a promise that they would not see disaster in their lifetime after repenting in their later years. This was based on God's mercy shown to those who repent.

If we were to protest here, asking 'Where is God's justice?', it would be akin to kicking away the ladder beneath our own feet. We too are exposed to the grave consequences of sin and are equally sinners for whom there is no escape from disaster except through mercy. Those who insist on justice are often intoxicated with a sense of superiority, believing themselves better than other sinners. We must remember that no one is free from the power of death and sin, and there is no other name given under heaven by which we can be saved, except through the atoning blood of the cross and the name of Jesus.

Despite this fundamental and essential, river-like difference between God and humanity, complaining against God is a matter of personal choice. Some humbly accept correction and move toward repentance, while others rebel, rage, and vehemently protest. And the outcome of that choice is each individual's responsibility. You must remember that those who complained and grumbled in the wilderness all perished in the desert, and only the younger generation, armed with faith and courage, entered the land flowing with milk and honey in Canaan.

The Lord is still reasoning with us, looking upon the hardened hearts of humanity with lament. We must cease the thoughts, words, and actions that grieve our Father's heart, who guides us to live lives filled with joy and pure devotion, deeply touched by His love, moved by His grace, and constantly grateful. That is the secret and the opportunity to receive the blessing of profit, peace, and prosperity for our souls.
