Nursing Is the Art of Choosing to Care for Others
Choosing a career is a continuous journey of decision-making. Every day, we make choices ranging from simple daily matters to significant life directions. When I was deciding which department to apply to, I stood at an important decision-making crossroads. Thanks to my steady academic performance in high school, I had the opportunity to apply to whichever department I wanted. However, having many options did not make the choice easy. Instead, it forced me to think deeply about what truly mattered for my future.
Rather than blindly following high employment rates or salaries, I spent considerable time looking into each field's working conditions, social role, and required responsibilities. I realized that making a wise decision was not about choosing a career based purely on income but about finding a path that best aligned with my values and personality. After careful reflection, I chose nursing because it offered the right environment where I could help others and continue to grow.
Looking back, I firmly believe that our future selves are shaped not by a single decision but by the complex overlap of our choices and meaningful coincidences. Coincidence happens when my choices meet a patient's needs at the right moment. Through this experience, I gained the ability to listen to whatever concerns patients share and developed a clearer vision to understand their situations with empathy. Whoever strives to care for others learns that caring itself is a valuable lesson. Whichever hospital I work in the future, I am confident that these experiences will guide me to become a more compassionate nurse.
