PHOENIX - Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Craig Counsell is expected to make a complete recovery after having a ligament in his right thumb repaired Thursday.
"Given the surgical findings and the success of the repair, I am very optimistic for a full recovery," hand surgeon Don Sheridan said. "Craig's rehabilitation program will require 10-to-12 weeks in order to allow for ligament healing, restoration of range of motion and strengthening."
Sheridan, assisted by team doctor Michael Lee, rejoined the torn ulna collateral ligament and the bone in the one-hour procedure.
Counsell dislocated the thumb sliding into second base Tuesday night against the Atlanta Braves. He had an MRI the next day, which revealed the torn ligament.
Counsell missed the final two months of last season with a neck injury that required fusion surgery.
