워싱턴 — 장기 파병에 따른 부담 속에서 해군은 현재 운용 중인 가장 오래된 항공모함을 조금 더 오래 유지하기로 공식 결정했으며, USS 니미츠의 운용 수명을 2027년 3월까지 연장했다고 Breaking Defense에 밝혔다.
해군 관계자는 금요일 늦게 이 변경 사항을 공개하며, 당초 올해 5월에 이 함정을 퇴역시키려던 계획을 연기했다고 말했다.
니미츠의 운용 수명을 연장하면 해군은 항공모함 11척 체제를 유지할 수 있게 된다. 해군은 현재 두 번째 포드급 항공모함인 존 F. 케네디의 인도를 기다리고 있으며, 이 함정은 현재 2027년 3월 인도가 예정되어 있다.
니미츠는 3월 7일 워싱턴주 브레머턴의 해군기지 키트삽을 출항해 남은 복무 기간 동안의 모항 이전 계획의 일환으로 버지니아주 노퍽 해군기지로 향했다. 이후 뉴포트뉴스의 HII에서 원자로 연료 제거와 함께 비활성화 절차를 진행하게 된다.

이 항공모함은 미 중부사령부와 미 인도태평양사령부 지역에서 9개월간의 파병 임무를 마친 뒤 12월 브레머턴으로 돌아왔다.
항해 중 항공모함 타격단은 소말리아에서 이슬람국가(ISIS)를 겨냥한 공습에 참여하며 미 아프리카사령부도 지원했다. 전체적으로 니미츠 승조원들은 총 8,500회의 출격을 수행했고 비행 시간은 17,000시간에 달했다.
역사적인 반복처럼, 니미츠가 젊은 함정이었을 때 수행한 초기 임무 중 하나는 1980년 이란에 억류된 미국 인질을 구출하기 위해 실시된 오퍼레이션 이글 클로를 지원하는 것이었다. 결국 실패로 끝난 이 작전에서의 인질 사건은 현재 이란 정권을 상대로 한 작전을 정당화하는 근거 중 하나로 트럼프 행정부에 의해 언급되고 있다.

WASHINGTON — Amid the strain of extended deployments, the Navy told Breaking Defense it has officially decided to keep its oldest active aircraft carrier in the water a little longer, prolonging the service life of the USS Nimitz to March 2027.

A service official revealed the change late Friday, pushing back previous plans to mothball the ship this May.

Extending the Nimitz’s service life means that the Navy could maintain its fleet of 11 carriers. The service is awaiting its newest aircraft carrier, the second Ford-class John F. Kennedy, which is currently slated for delivery in March 2027.

The Nimitz departed Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington on March 7 to head to Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia as part of a scheduled homeport shift for the remainder of its service life. It will then undergo its inactivation and defueling of the reactor at HII in Newport News.

The carrier returned to Bremerton in December, after concluding a nine-month deployment to US Central Command and US Indo-Pacific Command. 

While underway, the carrier strike group also supported US Africa Command by participating in strikes targeting the Islamic State (ISIS) in Somalia. Altogether, the Nimitz’s crew completed 8,500 sorties totaling 17,000 flight hours.
