Top sports people have known for a long time that training at high altitude can make them more competitive. Now, UK tour operator High Lives is offering a range of trips to Bolivia which, it says, uses the same condition to help people lose weight and improve fitness. The tailor-made trips combine visiting tourist attractions with walking, horse riding, cycling and spa treatments. From £700 per week.

This week-long trip is at Kasbah Angour, in the Atlas Mountains, just outside Marrakech. There is running coaching and advice on how to breathe, stretch, and move as well as a range of other activities such as aerobics and boxing. Departs March 9; from £1,395.

Hard fitness training from ex-soldiers has become popular, but a weekend away with Floyd Woodrow, a former member of the SAS, promises to be gentle. Based at Dewsall Court, a country house in Herefordshire, the weekend activities range from walks in the country to yoga, “sound therapy”, cooking lessons by food specialist Kerry Evans, and help with planning your personal goals for the coming year. African training, Senegal
The busy schedule for this week-long trip includes training on the beach, kayaking, running, and dance lessons to traditional music. It’s based at Toubacouta in the Saloum Delta National Park. Daley Thompson coaching, St Lucia
Now that he has finished giving his help to the 2012 Olympics, double Olympic gold-medal winner Daley Thompson is running several spring fitness holidays. Between March 18 to 29, he will be coaching at The Body Holiday, a specialist fitness and spa resort in St Lucia where the most recent innovation is a spinning and yoga studio high in the forest.
