Korean actor "impressed" by Hong Kong protest
An award-winning South Korean actor showed up in person on Sunday to an anti-government protest in Admiralty to voice his support for the anti-extradition movement – and interview participants for a Korean current affairs programme.
Kim Eui-sung, who won a prize in the 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards for his role in the zombie apocalypse movie ‘Train to Busan’ – said he wanted to have a first-hand look at the months-long demonstrations.
"I want to see the real situation and the real feeling of the Hong Kong people. I will do as many interviews as I can while I'm here," he told local reporters.
"So many young people came out and speak loud about their rights and freedoms for Hong Kong, for their future. It's very touching," Kim said.
Kim has been active on social media expressing his support for the protests here. Dozens of fans who recognised him stopped and clapped to show their appreciation for his support.
Some took selfies with him; others got a hug from the celebrity.
Kim also told reporters that he hasn’t personally witnessed any violence from the demonstrators, adding that he thinks if police don’t attack the people, there would be no violence.
But he spoke a bit too soon, as protesters subsequently hurled many molotov cocktails at government headquarters, prompting police to mobilise their water cannon truck and fire round after round of tear gas to disperse the protesters.
