MIKE BIBBY
6'2", 180, Arizona
Why he's The Man: Bibby should be the draft's first overall selection because he brings the whole point-guard package to the NBA: the speed of Stoudamire, the distributing abilities of Marbury, the scoring knack of Payton, the consistent outside shot of Stockton, the leadership of Tim Hardaway. He'll certainly need all these skills for whatever sorry team he ends up with. His college stats were merely solid (17.2 points per game, 5.7 assists), but remember, he played on loaded championship-caliber teams for both seasons. He's the type of player who seemed to only scratch the surface of his talent in college. Great things are ahead.
At best, he's the next: Isiah Thomas.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Howard Eisley, which isn't so bad.

LARRY HUGHES
6'5", 185, Saint Louis
Why he's The Man: Hughes was considered the nation's top recruit last year in some circles, and proved it by carrying an undermanned Saint Louis team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 2 freshman scorer in the country at 20.9 points per game, he also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals. Hughes spent the season as a shooting guard, with 37- and 40-point outings, but anyone who saw him in high school knows he is an outstanding point guard with great vision who truly makes his teammates better. If handed the reins to a club, he has a chance to be a special player. A very smooth, athletic player who is a good ballhandler and defender.
At best, he's the next: If he develops his jumper, think Ray Allen as a point guard.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Terry Dehere.

VINCE CARTER
6'7", 208, North Carolina
Why he's The Man: Here comes the kiss of death—Carter is the NBA's greatest hope for filling Michael Jordan's Nikes. The parallels are startling, beginning with the alma mater, a knack for on-court showmanship and a spectacular dunking style that puts fannies in the seats and eyes on TV screens. Carter was arguably college hoops' most exciting player to watch since N.C. State's David Thompson in the early 1970s. When the NBA eventually re-institutes the Slam Dunk Contest, it will be with Carter in mind. With great size for a two-guard and already possessing NBA strength, Carter is a tough matchup. Like MJ, Carter is a demon on defense—and will only get better. If critics attack his inconsistent outside shot, just remember it took another high-flying Carolina alum quite a few years to develop his own outside game.
At best, he's the next: Air you-know-who.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Good-dunk, no-shot washout Harold Miner.

PAUL PIERCE
6'7", 220, Kansas
Why he's The Man: With teams concentrating on stopping Raef LaFrentz, Pierce came into his own in the 1997 postseason. He led Kansas in scoring in all six tournament games (three Big 12, two NCAA), averaging 21.8 points and 9.7 rebounds. Though LaFrentz was touted as a national-player-of-the-year candidate and possible top pick in the draft entering this past season, Pierce led the Jayhawks in scoring at 20.4 ppg. Could be a wing forward, but he has the athleticism, shooting and ballhandling ability to be a dominant 2-guard. Tough and physical inside when he needs to be—can rebound and will be able to post up just about every NBA guard.
At best, he's the next: Could conceivably turn into Clyde Drexler.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Lamond Murray.

AL HARRINGTON
6'8", 222, Elizabeth, N.J., St. Patrick's H.S.
Why he's The Man: Harrington, the USA Today prepster of the year, had the SAT scores to go to the college of his choice. Instead, he opted to take his all-around game to the NBA. His story sounds strangely like prep-to-pro poster child Kobe Bryant—and believe it or not, Harrington may be better equipped to succeed as a pro. Harrington works tirelessly; after playing down low for most of his prep career, he shot hundreds of jumpers a day during the summer of 1997 to lift his outside game to a pro level. He's fearless in the lane and a monster in transition. Best of all, he loves playing defense. If Bryant is the prototype NBA shooting guard for the next millenium, Harrington is the mold from which the NBA small forward should be cut.
At best, he's the next: Scottie Pippen.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Prep-to-pro dud Tracy McGrady

RASHARD LEWIS
6'10", 220, Alief (Texas) Elsik H.S.
Why he's The Man: One of the best shooters in the draft, despite his size, Lewis has a quick release with three-point range. He projects as a wing forward because of perimeter skills and slight build, but is a good enough rebounder and interior defender to play in the 4 spot. Lewis committed to the University of Houston last fall but never signed his letter-of-intent because of the uncertainty surrounding the future of Cougars coach Alvin Brooks, who was eventually fired. Believed to be headed to Kansas if he had qualified academically, Lewis instead opted to turn pro.
At best, he's the next: If he develops better ballhandling skills, Kevin Garnett—with a much smaller wallet.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Don MacLean.

ROBERT TRAYLOR
6'8", 300, Michigan
Why he's The Man: Despite his ample frame, Traylor—a.k.a. "The Tractor"—showed throughout his Michigan career that sweet hands and near-perfect footwork can exist independently of an expanding waistline. A center in college, Traylor will have to make the transition to power forward in the NBA, where he'll not only set one of the widest picks in the game but also shock opponents with his deceptive speed, touch and leaping ability. There are whispers that Traylor has shed weight furiously, reportedly dropping down to 284 pounds—the lightest he's been since his early teens. Hope not, because it would be great to see his husky frame pirouetting through the paint.
At best, he's the next: Charles Barkley
And if I'm wrong, he's: Take your pick of two ex-players with girth and nicknames: John "Hot Plate" Williams or "Dinner Bell" Mel Turpin.

DIRK NOWITZKI
6'11", 237, Würzburg, Germany
Why he's The Man: This virtually unknown European exploded onto the scene at the Nike Hoop Summit during Final Four weekend in San Antonio. He dominated the game with 33 points (6-12 FG, 2-3 3-pt. FG, 19-23 FT) and 14 rebounds in a 104-99 International Select Team victory. Initially was thought headed to college (he visited Cal and Kentucky), but instead entered the draft; wavered the last few of weeks but did not withdraw his name. Nowitzki has an extremely aggressive, versatile offensive game. He can score inside or step out and hit the three. A good ballhandler, he can take it to the hole (as evidenced by free throw total at Hoop Summit). Very polished in all facets. Will have teams ruing the day they bypassed him. Fellow German Detlef Schrempf was called the best import since the Volkswagen; Nowitzki's coach says, "Here comes the Porsche."
At best, he's the next: Keith Van Horn.
And if I'm wrong, he's: Cherokee Parks.

MICHAEL OLOWOKANDI
7'0", 265, Pacific
Why he's The Man: Never heard of the "Kandi Man"? You will, especially since he's likely to be one of the first three picks. If he can be summed up in a word, it's "upside."
Olowokandi has legit NBA-center size, and his childhood soccer background has endowed him with unusually good footwork—considering he's only been playing organized hoops for three years. Some may call his lack of experience a negative; what it really means is that he doesn't have bad habits other players pick up as preps. Under NBA tutelage, he will blossom. Plus, he's a smart kid; he recruited himself to Pacific.
Don't expect an All-Star right away, à là Tim Duncan—but as the old adage goes, "You can't teach size." Down the road he'll be a powerful force in the pivot.
At best, he's the next: Hakeem Olajuwon
And if I'm wrong, he's: Adonal Foyle

KEON CLARK
6'11", 220, UNLV
Why he's The Man: What a strange road it's been. 1992-93: Senior year at Danville (Ill.) High. 1993-94: Planned to enroll at Temple, but didn't have enough core courses; placed at Irvine Valley College (Calif.) by Owls coach John Chaney for the second semester. 1994-95: Played 23 games at IVC; committed to Temple again. Failed to earn associate's degree; took classes briefly at Danville Area Community College, then ended up at Dixie College (St. George, Utah). 1995-96: Played 17 games at Dixie. Committed to UNLV. 1996-97: First-team All-WAC selection, playing 29 games for Rebels. 1997-98: Suspended for first 11 games for taking spring break trip paid by agents. Played next 10 games. Suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules on Feb. 9. Withdrew from UNLV on Feb. 24.
Clark, a lefthander, is a phenomenal athlete. His offensive game is highlighted by some of the most vicious, explosive dunks in recent memory. Can really run the floor. Also a spectacular shot-blocker.
At best, he's the next: A taller Bo Outlaw, a less-refined Antonio McDyess.
And if I'm wrong, he's: The second-coming of Elmore Spencer.

미니멈의 모델이 되는 선수들은 가히 기분이 씁쓸하겠군요. ^^;;
