The Answer to What It Is to Carry Out the New Covenant
Main References: Lk 22:14-20, Jer 31:31, Heb 8:7-13
After the betrayal of physical Israel, God promised through the Old Testament prophets to make a new covenant, and then Jesus came and established the new covenant.
Due to the appearance of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Eden, God told Adam not to eat the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil; this was His covenant with Adam. However, this covenant was broken because Adam ate the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. At the time of Noah, because of the sin of Noah’s second son, God determined each of the futures of the first, second, and third sons and their descendants. According to this prophecy, Canaan was ultimately destroyed at the time of Moses (Joshua) and physical Israel came to dwell in that land. However, Solomon, king of Israel, broke the covenant (1Kgs 11, Hos 6:7) that was made at the time of Moses (Ex 19:5-6), and so, that covenant also came to an end. Afterward, just like the contents of Heb 8, Jesus came and made a new covenant on the night of Passover (Lk 22:14-20). This was the fulfillment according to the Old Testament prophecies (Jer 31:31).
This new covenant was not fulfilled at the time of Jesus’ first coming. It was a promise of what would be fulfilled at the time of the second coming. And what was fulfilled at the time of the first coming was Jesus bearing the cross and shedding his blood for the new covenant. However, this blood was shed for the time of the second coming (Rv 1:5-6, 5:9-10, 7:14, 12:11). The new covenant was made because physical Israel did not keep the covenant they made with God, but broke it like Adam. The new covenant is to record God’s law on people’s hearts.
What is the law of the new covenant? The new covenant is the New Testament Revelation. Carrying out the new covenant is to record (seal) the prophecies of Revelation and the fulfillment of these prophecies on each person’s heart. By being created in this way, each person comes to know the true God. They will never again betray God, and they will be able to live together with Him (Ref. Heb 8:10-12). Those who carry out the new covenant in this way are freed from sin with Jesus’ blood and born of God’s seed, so they will live together with God forever as His family.
