15. Gisan Gyeom(Earth Mountain Humility Hexagram).....2
▣ [The lmage says] : High mountain within the earth, Humility.
the superior pweson reduces what is in excess and augments what is deficent,
weighing things to distribute them fairly.
[Explanation]
[The lmage says], high mountain forming balance with low land
is called Gyeom(謙,겸 - humility).
Seeing this, the superior person(君子,군자) subtracts from the ssside that has more
and adds to the side that has less, and strives to maintain the balance of things,
as if weighing them on a scale to remain fair and impartial.
[Commentary]
Those who have much share with those who have less,
and those who are capable cherish and care for those who are lacking ;
one learns the way of humility by observing how high mountains descend
into low ground to create balance.
The word "humility" signifies that humility truly begins only after one reflects
on excess in all matters.
Dongpa(Su Shi) left a famous saying :
"The sage speaks of humility, but in reality, it is simply returning to moderaation(the Mean)
The land is excessively low and the mountain is excessively high,
but because the mountain rests on the earth, the mountain does appear arrogant,
and the earth does not appear lowly.
Therefore, subtracting from those who have much is Gyeom(謙,겸),
and adding to those who lack is also Gyeom(謙,겸).
However, the way of Gyeom(謙,겸) is achieved only when high mountains and low lands
do not lose the beauty of balance and fairness ;
forcibly taking from the rich to give to the poor is a problem,
and the idea that the poor must unconditionally take from the rich is an even bigger problem.
Therefore, a superior person must establish ldeal policies so that friction does not arise
from the distribution of income and its imbalances,
thereby keeping society and the country healthy.
The Gyeom(謙,겸 - humility) viewed by Jaguk as a Buddha is as follows :
"The Buddha subtracts from endless mountain of boundless merit(無邊功德,무변공덕)
to bestow compassion upon sentient beings ; all sentient beings of the great earth across ten
thousand worlds should obtain equal charity(平等布施,평등보시) through the grace of that
King of Virtue(德王,덕왕)."
Therefore, a superior person should ensure that benefits are distributed evenly among
all people through bu-da(裒多,부다 - reducing excess) and ik-gwa(翼寡,익과 - augmenting
the deficient), as well as Cheong-mul(稱物,칭물 - weighing things) and pyeong-si(平施,평시 -
distributing fairly), filling places that lack by taking from what is abundant.
Methods based onthe lmages and Meanings of the Book of Changes) by citing the Tian-ze Li
hexagram(天澤履卦,천택이괘), which transforms from the Gyeom hexagram(謙卦,겸괘) :
"The mountain being inside the earth isthe image of being high yet humbly lowering oneself,
and stating that 'there is a mountain isside a earth' clarifies that within the lowered
and gentle stste, there is height and greatness.
Therefore, even though it is low, cannot be surpassed.
If one is lowered and gentle, but lacks height and greatness within,
humility is not established.
What the superior person lowers and keeps gentle is their words and actions,
while height and greatness refer to their undertakings.
Because they lower their words and actions to be gentle, they can harmonize with the masses,
and because their undertakings are high and great, the masses can submit and admire them.
If their words and actions are solemn and rigorous while they perform deeds that ordinary
people cannot, or if their speech and laughter are decorous and cautious yet they lack
the merit to rescue people and benefit themselves, they will sternly become someone
the masses avoid and will distantly be cut off from others.
As Confucius called them, those with a solemn face, those with dignity on their face,
and those who adopt benevolence merely on their face have only an empty name without
internalized virtue, ultimately harming their own nature and losing benefit ;
this is the exact pooosite of humility."
Considering oneself high and despising the lowliness of others,
considering oneself to possess much and scorning the scarcity of others,
considering oneself clean and exposing the dirtiness of others,
and considering oneself virtuous and exposing the unworthiness of others is not
the virtue of humility.
Not holding one's own nobility precious, but worrying about the poverty and lowliness
of people, not holding one's own wealth rich, but aiding the poverty of people, and not holding one's own virtue wise, but pitying the foolishness of others is thevirtue of humility.
'Subtracting from what is abundant to add to what is lacking' means reducing one's own
abundance to supplement the insufficiency of the people.
'Subtracting[裒,부]' means gathreing and withdrawing so it does not expand,
and 'adding [益,익]' means descending to grant relief.
If one conssidere one's own nobility as humble and holds the lowliness of others as noble,
considers one's own wealth as poor and holds the poverty of others as rich,
and considers one's own wisdom as foolish and holds the foolishness of ohters as wise,
it is arrogant and false, not the virtue of humility.
The virtue of humility is when wirhdrawing does not lead to criticism,
and adding does not lead to arrogance and falsity.
'Weighing things to make distribution equal' is the Mean(中庸,중용) ;
Yong(庸,용) is humility, and appropriateness is Yong(庸,용).
In the transformed Tian Ze Li hexagram
the upper Qian trigram(乾卦,건괘) becomes 'subtracting(裒,부)' ,
and the lower Tae trigram(兌卦,태괘) becomes 'adding (益,익)',
while the Kun trigram(坤卦,곤괘) becomes 'making equal(平,평)'.
The Tae trigram(兌卦,태괘) becomes 'bestowing distributing(施,시)'.
Yielding/declining(辭讓,사양) is one asoect of humility.
Attributing good things to others while accepting bad things oneself,
and attributing benefits to others while keeping harm to oneself―ane must also not
exceed the middle way and must maintain the proper rule ; this is what is meant by
'when speaking of yielding, it must reach the other party' in the Guu-eo.
If one does not yield good things to one's superiors, anger and jealousy will arise,
and not passing beneficial things to one's subordinates will bring resentment."
Meanwhile , Siksan(息山,식산) Lee Man-bu(李滿敷,이만부),
through laboring humility(勞謙,노겸), stated that :
