Money raised in last year’s Advent campaign by Catholics in Suwon diocese is to go to help the needy in Asia and in Africa.
Hanmaum (One Heart), Suwon diocese´s social welfare arm, gave 300 million won (US$ 277,983) to several Religious orders and organizations helping poor people abroad on May 31.
According to Hanmaum, Catholics in 195 parishes donated money to sponsored activities during last year’s Advent period involving people committing themselves to “minor inconveniences” over 24-hour periods such as reducing food waste or nor using their mobile phones.
The Hanmaum started their Advent campaigns in 2007.
Father Peter Hong Myung-ho, administrator of social evangelization in Suwon diocese, said that Hanmaum had decided eight Religious orders and organizations would be the beneficiaries.
Among them were the Missionary Benedictines of Tutzing Seoul Priory that plans to establish a kindergarten in Tanzania and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate that will offer computers to youths in Bangladesh.
“Please use this money to share God’s grace and love with the poor,” Auxiliary Bishop Linus Lee Seong-hyo of Suwon told them, Suwon diocese founded Hanmaum in late 2006 to practice the spirit of the 44th International Eucharistic Congress, held in Seoul in 1989.
