8. 가르치는 사람이 되다

     1976년 무비스님의 나이 서른네 살에 통도사 강주가 되었다. 강사라는 이력도 없이 강사스님들의 대표인 강주가 된 것이다. 그 때는 탄허스님이 [화엄경]을 다 끝냈을 때였다.

“당장에 수계의식에도 필요한 책인데, 번역된 [범망경]이 없어.

무비스님이 한번 번역해 보세요.”

고암스님과 경산스님이 탄허스님의 출판을 돕고 있는 무비스님에게 제안을 했다.

탄허스님의 [화엄경]을 만든 식자기계로 [범망경]을 출판했다. 무비스님이 세상에 처음으로 내놓은 경전 번역이었다.

그 무렵 통도사에서 강주 초청이 온 것이다.

그래서 탄허스님께 그 일을 말씀드렸다.

“스님의 법을 이었다거나 전강을 했다는 징표로 법호를 내려주십시오.”

탄허스님께서 내려주신 법호는 살수(撒手)였다.

’손을 뻗어 나뭇가지에 매달려 있는 것이 귀한 것이 아니라, 절벽에서 손을 놓아 버려야 대장부‘

라는 뜻의 문장에서 뽑아주신 이름이었다.

살수는 소리 내어 부르기가 날카롭고 드센 감이 있었다. 스스로 여천(如天)이라는 법호를 지었다.

통도사에서 강주를 한 것은 짧은 기간 동안이었다.

8. Becoming a Teacher

     In 1976, when Mubi Seunim was 34 years old, he became the Head Lecturer at Tongdosa Temple. He became the leader of the lecturing monks, even though he had not been a lecturer before.

It was when Tanheo Seunim had just finished his work on the [Avatamsaka Sutra].

"We urgently need the [Brahmajala Sutra] for the ordination ceremony, but there isn't any translated version. Mubi Seunim, why don't you try translating it?“

Goam Seunim and Gyeongsan Seunim suggested this to Mubi Seunim, who was assisting Tanheo Seunim with his publication work.

Using the same printing equipment that was used for Thanheo Senum’s [Avatamsaka Sutra], they published the [Brahmajala Sutra]. It was the first Buddhist scripture that Mubi Seunim translated and introduced to the world.

Around that time, an invitation came from Tongdosa Temple for him to serve as Kangju, the chief lecturer who teaches and explains Buddhist scriptures to monks in training.
So, he spoke to Tanheo Seunim about it.

"Please give me a Dharma name to show I've followed your teachings.“
The Dharma name bestowed by Tanheo Seunim was Salsu (撒手).“

"It was a name taken from the saying, 'It's not special to reach out and hold onto a branch; a true hero lets go of the cliff.'"

The name Salsu sounded sharp and strong when spoken aloud. He then chose the Dharma name Yeo-Cheon (如天), which means ’Like the Sky’, for himself. His time as Head Lecturer at Tongdosa Temple was short.
