Section 10: The adornment of pure lands
Chapter 10. Not-Abiding in Any Objects
The Buddha asked Subhuti, "What do you think? In the ancient times when the Tathagata was at the place of Buddha Dipankara (연등불(然燈佛)), was there any Dharma that the Tathagata attained?"
"No, World Honoured One. In ancient times when the Tathagata was at the place of Buddha Dipankara, there was no Dharma really attained by Him."
"Subhuti, what do you think? Was the Buddha Land adorned by the Bodhisattva?" "No, World Honoured One. Why? Because what is called the adornment of Buddha land is not in fact adorning a Buddha land. That is why it is called adornment." "Therefore Subhuti, all the Bodhisattvas and Mahasattvas ought to give rise to a pure and clear mind." "The mind abided in forms ought not to be risen. The mind ought not to be risen abided in sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects or objects of mind(dharma). Where not abided at any object without fail, the mind of pure and clear arises.[응무소주 이생기심(應無所住 而生其心)]"
"Subhuti, let's say there is a man whose body is as big as the king of mount Sumeru (수미산), what do you think? Is his body large?" Subhuti answered, "Very large, World Honoured One. Why? Because what the Buddha says is no-body, is called a large body."
Chapter 10.
The Buddha then continued, "What do you think, Subhuti? When I was in a previous life, with Dipankara Buddha, did I receive any definite teaching or attain any degree of self-control, whereby I later became a Buddha?" "No, honorable one. When you were a disciple of Dipankara Buddha, in truth, you received no definite teaching, nor did you attain any definite degree of self-control." "Subhuti, know also that if any Buddha would say, 'I will create a paradise,' he would speak falsely. Why? Because a paradise cannot be created nor can it not be uncreated." "A disciple should develop a mind which is in no way dependent upon sights, sounds, smells, tastes, sensory sensations or any mental conceptions. A disciple should develop a mind which does not rely on anything." "Therefore, Subhuti, the minds of all disciples should be purified of all thoughts that relate to seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and discriminating. They should use their minds spontaneously and naturally, without being constrained by preconceived notions arising from the senses." "Suppose, Subhuti, a man had an enormous body. Would the sense of personal existence he had also be enormous?" "Yes, indeed, Buddha," Subhuti answered. "His sense of personal existence would be enormous. But the Buddha has taught that personal existence is just a name, for it is in fact neither existence nor non-existence. So it only has the name 'personal existence'."
Setting Forth Pure Lands
Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? In the remote past when the Tathagatg was with Dipankara Buddha, did he have any degree of attainment in the Good Law? No, World-honoured One. When the Tathagata was with Dipankara Buddha he had no degree of attainment in the Good Law. Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Bodhisattva set forth any majestic Buddha-lands? No, World-honoured One. Wherefore? Because setting forth majestic Buddha-lands is not a majestic setting forth;this is merely name. 〔Then Buddha continued:〕 Therefore, Subhuti, all Bodhisattvas, lesser and great, should develop a pure, lucid mind, not depending upon sound, flavour, touch, odour or any quality. A Bodhisattva should develop a mind which alights upon no thing whatsoever; and so should he establish it. Subhuti, this may be likened to a human frame as large as the mighty Mount Sumeru. What do you think? Would such a body be great? Subhuti replied: Great indeed, World-honoured One. This is because Buddha has explained that no body is called a great body.
