Monaco's Korea Republic striker Chu-Young Park spoke exclusively to Ligue1.com Editor-in-Chief Robbie Thomson about his side's tough season, French football and Saturday's clash with derby rivals Nice.
A veritable megastar in his native South Korea, Chu-Young Park really turned heads in France when he scored the only goal in Monaco's shock win over league leaders Lille at the weekend.
The 2004 Asian Young Footballer of the Year has gone from strength to strength since signing for the principality club in 2008, scoring five goals in his debut season, eight in his second and 11 so far this season. However, despite currently topping the club's scoring charts, the modest 25-year-old is loath to put his own exploits above those of the team.
'Turn things around'
"If the team had had a better season than we've had then I might be feeling more positive," said Park, whose side climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since Week 13 with the win over Lille. "But things have been tough for us this year and so of course this has an effect on how I see my own performances. Still, we played well last week and I think that if we can keep playing like that, it's still possible that we can turn things around before the end of the season."
The Korea Republic international was already a star in his homeland when he made the move to Ligue 1 from FC Seoul three years ago, and while there may not be legions of screaming fans besieging him at the Stade Louis II, he says that he has reaped the rewards of the cosmopolitan atmosphere at the club.
'Learn a lot more'
"I think I have learnt lots of things from the team. There is a wide range of footballing backgrounds here," said Park, who himself spent a year at the Zico Football Center in Rio de Janeiro in 2002. "We have players from Europe and all over Africa at the club and I think I can still learn a lot more from them."
Portuguese-speaking Park's South American connection has come in handy in his time in Monte Carlo, where he has become fast friends with Brazilian defender Adriano, who helped him to overcome the culture shock and settle in at his new club.
"Adriano is a really good friend of mine and he's always helping me out with something or other," said Park, not necessarily referring to the assist the Brazilian provided for him in Week 29's 2-0 win over Arles-Avignon. "We eat together often and we get along really well. I'm really thankful to him for all the things he has done for me, and I know a lot of the other players feel the same way."
'A great opportunity'
Park is the best known of a crop of talented young Korean players in France - like fellow FC Seoul alumnus Jo-Gook Jung at Auxerre and Valenciennes' Tae-Hee Nam - and feels that he and his countrymen have a lot to gain from playing in one of Europe's most competitive leagues.
"There are many Korean players in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 and I think playing here in France is a great opportunity for all of us," said the striker who has earned 50 caps (and scored 16 goals) for his country. "There are many intelligent coaches working in French football with a wealth of knowledge and experience that we can benefit from. These factors make French football a very attractive destination for Korean players, but the opportunities are limited and not everyone can get a chance over here."
'A very important game'
Monaco's Park-inspired win over Lille last weekend breathed new life into their push to secure top-flight survival, but with just four points separating 11th-place from the drop zone, Laurent Banide's men have little choice but to get the win when they play south-coast rivals Nice on Saturday.
"It's a derby this weekend and it's also a very important game in the battle to avoid relegation," said Park, whose 16th-placed side trail Nice by two places but just a single point. "Nice have lots of enthusiastic fans, so we'll be counting on our own supporters to make the short trip along the Mediterranean coast to spur us on - that would help us a lot."
