세금 감면 혜택으로 침체된 경제 활성화

정부는 침체된 경제를 활성화하기 위한 최후 방책으로 직원 수 5명 이상의 신생 기업체에 대한 세금을 50%에서 100%까지 감면하기로 결정했다. 코리아 헤롤드에 따르면 이번 세금 감면 혜택은 올 7월부터 실시될 예정이다. 감세 안건은 다른 여러 경제 활성화 안건들과 함께 서울 명동 은행회관에서 이헌재 부총리 겸 재정경제부 장관 주재로 연 경제 장관 간담회를 통해 확정되었다.

In its latest effort to rev up the stagnant economy, the government decided to offer 50 percent to 100 percent tax cuts to startup businesses hiring five or more employees. The Korea Herald reports the incentives would take effect in July. The move was a part of measures decided on during a meeting of economy-related ministers, presided over by Minister of Finance and Economy Lee Hun-jai. The meeting was held at the Bankers Club in downtown Seoul.

서울의 새 외교관으로 크리스토퍼 힐 내정

워싱턴은 전 주폴란드 미국대사였던 크리스토퍼 힐을 새 주한미대사로 임명했다. 외교부의 발표에 의하면 정부는 미국의 새 대사관 임명을 받아들였으며 상원 임명식 및 기타 행정 절차를 마친 후에 서울을 방문할 것이라고 한다. 외교통상부의 한 관계자에 의하면 새로 임명된 올해 52세인 이 직업 외교관은 8월경에 현 주한미대사인 토마스 허바드를 대신할 것으로 예상된다.

Washington has appointed Christopher R. Hill, the former U.S. ambassador to Poland, as its top envoy to Seoul. The Foreign Ministry announced that the government agreed to the U.S. ambassador-designate's appointment and that he would come to Seoul after completing the Senate confirmation hearing and other administrative procedures. A Foreign Ministry official expected the 52-year-old career diplomat would replace current U.S. Amb. Thomas Hubbard in August.

탄행 반대 운동에 교수들도 참여

노무현 대통령의 탄핵안을 가결한 국회 의회를 상대로 철회 운동이 벌어진 가운데 200여명의 국내 명문 대학 교수들이 시민 단체의 거센 탄핵 반대 운동에 동참하였다. 서울대 교수 88명과 고려대 교수 120명은 야당에게 탄핵 소추의 철회와 나라를 정치적 혼란에 빠뜨린 것에 대한 사과를 요구했다. 이번 교수들의 움직임은 헌법재판소의 첫 공청이 열리기 전 탄핵소추안 검토를 위한 두 번째 회의가 있은 후 일어났다. 지난 3월 12일 탄핵이 가결된 이후로 500개 이상의 시민 단체, 노동 조합과 학생회 단체들이 대규모 촛불 시위를 갖고 있는 가운데 충청북도에 위치한 네 대학교에서도 114명의 교수들이 의회의 탄핵가결에 대한 사과를 요구하는 성명을 발표했다.

More than 200 professors of the nations’ prestigious universities joined civic groups’ move to denounce the National Assembly’s impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun, calling for its immediate withdrawal. Some 88 professors of Seoul National University and 120 others of Korea University demanded opposition lawmakers scrap the impeachment motion and apologize for plunging the nation into political turmoil. The move came as the Constitutional Court held its second meeting to discuss the review process of the impeachment before it convenes its first hearing. More than 500 civic groups, labor unions and student groups have staged massive candlelight vigils to oppose the impeachment since March 12. About 114 professors from five universities in North Chungchong Province also announced a statement demanding the Assembly apologize for the impeachment motion.
