From various sources
Dr. Karach says that Oil pulling totally heals “head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.”
(NaturalNews) In a society riddled with complicated, expensive and even dangerous detoxification methods, oil pulling offers a technique that is refreshingly simple. Oil pulling is a practice taken from Ayurvedic medicine that involves swishing, or pulling, unrefined oil in your mouth for several minutes. The modern adaptation of oil pulling has only recently become popular in Western society, but already many are reporting amazing results from this unorthodox therapy.
Why should anyone practice oil pulling? What are the benefits?
The alleged benefits of oil pulling cover everything from curing gingivitis to facilitating weight loss. Some users even report a decrease in gray hair! However, since oil pulling is not a scientifically documented procedure, claims like these should probably be taken with a grain of salt. On the other hand, since oil pulling is such an easy and virtually harmless practice, it’s certainly worth a try to see if some real benefits can be had. Here is a list of some of the benefits associated with oil pulling:
- Whiter, straighter teeth
- Healthy, pink gums
- Increased energy
- Decreased migraine headaches
- Clear sinuses
- Less severe asthma
- Decreased allergies
- Improved PMS symptoms
- Regulated menstrual cycles
- Better sleep
- Clear skin
Overall, oil pulling is known as a powerful method of detoxifying the body. Coconut oil expert Dr. Bruce Fife and author of Oil Pulling Therapy says, “Oil pulling is one of the most remarkable methods of detoxification and healing I have ever experienced in my career as a naturopathic physician.”
How to Practice Oil Pulling:
Traditionally unrefined sunflower or sesame oil was used for oil pulling, but today many other oils are used as well. Unrefined olive or coconut oil come highly recommended if you don’t want to use the traditional oils.
- Ideally oil pulling should be done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
- About one tablespoon of oil should be used.
- A couple drops of essential oil or a healing oil like oregano can be added if desired.
- Swish the oil slowly and methodically, not vigorously.
- Try to make sure the oil reaches every region of your mouth.
- Be careful not to swallow the oil.
- Continue swishing the oil for at least 10 minutes, preferably more like 20 minutes.
- The oil will become very thin and foamy as you swish.
- Spit the oil out and rinse your mouth thoroughly with pure water.
- Brush with a natural toothpaste afterwards.
Oil pulling can be done as often as you like. Daily sessions are recommended if you have specific health problems you are trying to address with oil pulling. This traditional practice is also an excellent measure to add to your daily routine to facilitate detoxification and overall health.

OIL PULLING INTRODUCTION
Oil Pulling (“OP”) is reported to cure: Mouth & Gum Disease; Stiff Joints; Allergies; Asthma; High Blood Sugar; Constipation; Migraines; Bronchitis; Eczema; Heart, Kidney, Lung Diseases; Leukemia; Arthritis; Meningitis; Insomnia; Menopause (hormonal issues); Cancer; AIDS; Chronic Infections; Varicose Veins; High Blood Pressure; Diabetes; Polio; Cracked Heels.
Here’s are a few paragraphs from Bharat Savur’s article on The Hindu Business Online
…”When Dr Karsch examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It’s poisonous, so never swallow it, he warns. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases. Apparently, Dr Karsach cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis.
The first sign of improvement is in the teeth-they become firm and white, he says. Other healing indications: fresh, relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, anew appetite and energy, better memory and deep sleep.
Dr Karsch swears by the mouth oil-wash for anything from organ-disorders, skin-diseases, menstrual problems, paralysis to every ache and it is in the human anatomy. You can gargle even when you have fever, he says, adding, it takes anything from two days to a year to cure a disease.
And if these claims sound exaggerated, he told a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists, try out the process yourself.
Interestingly, Ayurveda advises oil gargling “to purify the taste-buds and the entire system”, as explained by Dr Deepak Chopra in Perfect Health. According to this life science, the tongue is mapped by organ-locations — that is, each section of the tongue is connected to the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine.
Thus, an oil-mouth-massage soothes and stimulates the key meridians where taste meets organ. Simultaneously, as in any skin-massage, the inner skin and lining of the mouth, palate and tongue become warm and supple and the lubrication prevents dryness (the vatic effect).
In modern dietetics too, dryness is discussed. For example, lack of Vitamin A (retinal) causes the outer lining of the eyeball to dry and wrinkle, and affects vision.
And as any dietician would tell you, all oils contain 960 micrograms of vitamin A per 10 gm (the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A per adult is 600 micrograms). So, it’s possible that oil gargling helps in reaching the required retinal to the eyeballs and keeps them elastic and smooth.
Likewise, the Ayurvedic `purification of taste-buds’ also has its equivalent in dietetics as `antioxidants’. Oxidation literally means `the putrefaction of body-tissues’.
And oil-soluble vitamins, A, C, D, and E are antioxidants that protect and prevent the decaying process and help maintain the integral functioning of cell membranes. That’s why, many people are ingesting vitamin E pills to stem `aging’ (oxidation).”
THEORIES
These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences. Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!
INSTRUCTIONS:
First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 – 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it’s still yellow, you haven’t done it long enough.
You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.
Follow by drinking 2 – 3 glasses of water.
DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL.
It now contains parasites and bacteria!
DO NOT GARGLE IN THE THROAT — THE OIL IS MEANT TO BE SWISHED IN THE MOUTH ONLY.
DO IT SLOWLY.
HOW IT WORKS:
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.
Note #1:
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.
Note #2:
The old school says that only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results. However, our readers report success using other oils too.
Note #3:
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.
Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.
Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. Your body is healing.
Note #6:
Will your dental fillings fall out? It’s possible but highly unlikely unless there is pre-existing damage or loose fillings.
The oil will start to thin out after a few minutes because saliva is constantly being mixed in and swished about.

11/8/2006: Laura from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia writes, “I wanted to comment that the usage of the word “gargle” on your Oil Pulling page is a tad alarming given the warning NOT to gargle in the throat near the end of the instructions. It seems Dr. Karasch used it as well. I have never heard or used the word “gargle” unless it meant using the throat, so it is a tad misleading for the unsuspecting or the casual reader. Perhaps the alert could be placed at the beginning of the article to clarify the usage of the word and for safety’s sake. Thank you for your time.”

What in The World Is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is the practice of taking 1 tablespoon of a cold-pressed vegetable oil (such as sesame or sunflower seed oil) and swishing it in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes. This is done soon after waking, before eating or brushing one’s teeth — and it has the effect of “pulling” bacteria, parasites, mucous and other toxins from your body through your saliva.
Oil pulling has its roots in Ayurveda, the Hindu art of healing, which asserts that the tongue is mapped by organ-locations. This means that each section of the tongue is connected to, or corresponds to, the liver, heart, kidneys, lungs, spleen, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine. When you swish the oil around the tongue, you effectively soothe and stimulate the key meridians of the body, and their corresponding organs.
In his book, Perfect Health, Deepak Chopra, an American physician born in India, a bestselling author and lecturer on Ayurveda, spirituality and mind-body medicine, cites oil pulling as an Ayurvedic technique that is “valuable for purifying and strengthening the body.”
Oil pulling gained popularity in recent years partly because a Ukrainian doctor, Dr. F. Karach, who reportedly cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis through oil pulling, made the world aware of this unusual therapy.
Dr. Karach claims that oil pulling totally heals “headaches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.” Dr. Karach even challenged a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists to try the process in the treatment of cancer.
If you wish to experience the health benefits of oil pulling for yourself, here’s the simple procedure that Ayurveda practitioners recommend:
1) Immediately upon waking up in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, put 1 tablespoon of either cold-pressed sesame oil or sunflower seed oil in your mouth.
2) Tilt your chin up and slowly swish the oil around your tongue, pulling and sucking it through the teeth, making sure you don’t swallow the oil. Do this for 15 to 20 minutes until the oil in your mouth becomes a thin, white foam. You can check your progress periodically — if the oil is still yellow, continue swishing. Do not gargle the oil. Just swish it in your mouth.
3) When the oil turns white, spit it out, then rinse the remaining oil out of your mouth.
4) Drink 1 – 3 glasses of water.
For maximum detoxification, some people do this procedure 2 more times during the day — always on an empty stomach, or 4 hours after meals.

There may have been great technological advances in health care, but it is important not to lose sight of the basic protocols of patient care. In the field of dentistry this means establishing and maintaining effective preventive habits in our patients. No matter how sophisticated dental techniques and procedures may have become, preventive dentistry remains the foundation of oral health care. Dental health care professionals need to put home oral hygiene at the core of their advice on preventive practices. The area of oral hygiene has undergone humongous development, and a mundane subject has turned into a field with a surprising amount of growth and research. There are umpteen number of indigenous natural medicinal products which deserve due recognition for their contribution to improving oral health.
The sesame plant (Sesamum indicum) of the Pedaliaceae family has been considered a gift of nature to mankind because of its nutritional qualities and its many desirable health effects. The seeds of the plant are commonly known as ‘gingelly’ or ’til’ seeds. Sesame oil has a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids and is a good source of vitamin E. [1] The antioxidants present in it are mainly sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. [1] Sesamin has been found to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol as well as its production in the liver. It reduces lipogenesis and exhibits an antihypertensive action. [2]
‘Oil pulling’ or oil swishing is a procedure that involves swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits. Oil pulling therapy with sesame oil has been extensively used as a traditional Indian folk remedy for many years for strengthening teeth, gums, and jaws and to prevent tooth decay, oral malodor, bleeding gums, dryness of throat, and cracked lips. [3] The concept of oil pulling is not new and it has been discussed in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, where it is referred to as kavala graha or kavala gandoosha. [4] For oil pulling therapy, a tablespoon (teaspoon for young children) of sesame oil is taken in the mouth, sipped, sucked, and pulled between the teeth for 10-15 min. The viscous oil turns thin and milky white. It is claimed that the swishing activates enzymes and draws toxins out of the blood. [3] The oil should not be swallowed as it contains bacteria and toxins. Oil pulling therapy should be followed by tooth brushing and rinsing of the mouth. It is preferably done on an empty stomach in the morning.
The question to be answered here is: ‘Why is oil pulling being popularized?’ Sesame oil has the following advantages over the standard and commercially available mouthwashes: it causes no staining, has no lingering aftertaste, and causes no allergic reactions. It is five to six times more cost-effective than the commercially available mouthwashes and is, moreover, readily available in the household. Considering these benefits, oil pulling therapy with sesame oil should be promoted as a measure for the prevention of oral disease. Sufficient scientific research has not been carried out to evaluate the effect of oil pulling therapy on oral health and this needs to be addressed. The answer to the above question is: ‘If we do not support our desi product, who else will?’ In the very near future, sesame oil will open new doors in oral health care.

Oilpulling Therapy STEP BY STEP
Step1: First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth.
Step 2:
Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don’t tilt your head back to gargle though). You’ll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you’re putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you’ll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon, it will become second nature.
Step3:
As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, you may notice the oil/saliva mixture in your mouth has become thicker. This is quite normal, since it is pulling out toxins from your body. When 20 minutes is up, spit out the oil into the toilet. Don’t be alarmed if it looks yellowish–this is also normal.
Step4:
Rinse out your mouth a couple of times with warm water and spit into the toilet. Rinse and spit with a good mouthwash. I prefer to dilute with water (or use full strength), regular hydrogen peroxide and I rinse and spit with that. The hydrogen peroxide is very effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left in the mouth.
Step5:
Rinse out your mouth a couple of times with warm water and spit into the toilet. Rinse and spit with a good mouthwash. I prefer to dilute with water (or use full strength), regular hydrogen peroxide and I rinse and spit with that. The hydrogen peroxide is very effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left in the mouth.
