Topic 1 - More People Live Alone
A growing number of people live alone. According to the National Statistical Office, one out of every five people lives on their own. As of 2005, among the 16 million households across the nation, roughly 3.2 million are occupied by single dwellers.
The number of the single adults has increased 42.5 percent from 2.2 million five years ago. Furthermore, the portion of lonely people out of the total population has risen from 15.5 percent to 20 percent during the same period. Among them, 368,000 people are living apart from their families due to their jobs, an increase of 38 percent.
The number of larger families with more than four members has decreased, whereas the number of families with one or two in the household has increased over the last five years. An increasing number of unmarried people in their 30s have also contributed to the trend. The number of unmarried people in their 30s was 76,000 in 1995 and more than doubled to 1.7 million in 2005.
The statistical office said that the number of people who don’t want to marry and who have not been able to marry has been growing. If one were to include the number of people living independently from their parents, the number of singles would reach even higher, totaling 6.5 million.
Other countries have seen the same trend as Korea. Singles in China are forecasted to reach 91.3 million by 2014 as the number increases 1.5 percent every year. Britain also has seen about 150,000 singles every year and this is because of the trend of increasing divorce and separation of families, the British government analyzed.
Meanwhile, Korea is rapidly becoming a country with an aging populace. The number of elders living on their own has increased 38.4 percent from 707,000 to 978,000. In addition, the number of people over 55 years old who have landed jobs has surpassed 4 million for the first time, up from 3.6 million in 2004 and 3.8 million in 2005.

Topic 2. Women’s subtle way of saying ‘I like you’ without speaking
A man who wants to know if a woman is attracted to him should start by observing her behavior, according to a British dating coach. Behavioral psychologist and relationship coach Jo Hemmings said during an interview with the Daily Telegraph that women are able to say that they like someone by just using body language.
One of the most common things to look for is the pulling up of sleeves. “If I’m sitting here and I find you attractive, I will probably pull my sleeves up. Because what that does is expose this part of the arm (forearm), which is the softest flesh on the body,” said Hemmings.
She said by doing this, a woman would be subconsciously appealing that she is a “soft, gentle, tender woman.” Another thing women like to do is to narrow the distance between her and the man she is attracted to, which is done by pushing an object toward the man. Hemmings explained that this happens because women like their relationships to be emotionally intimate.
Hemmings added that a pouted mouth tells more than a smile, because it is relatively easy fake a smile. “A mouth that’s just slightly pouting, showing teeth, is a good sign,” she said.
Unlike women, however, men are not very skilled at delivering messages through non-verbal means, Hemmings said. This happens because women have a better understanding of body language -- men only have about 10 significant body language gestures compared to women’s 50.
