법적 상속자의 환상

유대인들의 자부심은 율법에 근거한 것입니다. 모세를 통해 율법을 주신 하나님은 율법을 준수하는 것으로 하나님에 대한 사랑을 확인하시고자 했습니다. 율법의 핵심은 순종입니다. 자신의 생각과 방법을 포기하고 하나님의 방법 곧 그의 길을 따르는 것입니다. 그러나 그의 길은 인간이 따르기에는 무리였습니다. 하나님이 정말로 원하시는 것은 율법과 규례의 철저한 준수가 아니라 마음에서 우러나는 사랑의 순종입니다.

다윗은 비록 율법상으로는 살인과 간음의 중대범죄를 저지른 자였으나 하나님의 마음의 뜻을 볼 줄 알았습니다. 하나님께서 원하시는 제사는 상한 심령이라는 한 마디에 그의 모든 죄는 용서를 받습니다. 상한 마음으로 주께 나가는 것은 자신의 죄를 인정하고 하나님의 자비하심에 자신을 맡기는 것입니다. 이것을 바울은 '믿음으로 말미암은 의'라고 정의합니다.

외면적 할례보다 내면의 할례 곧 그 분의 마음에 연동되는 심령이 참 자녀의 자격을 갖추도록 인도한다는 것입니다. 성령에 감동된 마음이 아버지의 보좌를 흔드는 기도로 연결되는 것입니다. 이심전심이라고 했듯이 말하지 않아도 다 알고 계신 그 분 앞에 심한 통곡과 눈물로 소원을 올려드린 예수님의 기도를 따르는 것입니다. 그가 비록 아들이시라도 이런 고난의 본을 보이셨으니 우리도 그의 뒤를 따라 자기 십자가를 지고 생명의 길을 걸어야 합니다.

율법은 진노를 이루게 한다고 15절에 말합니다. 첫째 율법이 있기전에는 법기준이 없는 관계로 범법이라는 판단을 낼 수가 없었습니다. 오직 양심만이 그 기준이 될 뿐이었습니다. 그러나 율법이 선포된 후에 인간은 벗어날 길 없는 정죄의 늪에 빠집니다. 율법이 악한 것이 아니라 인간의 심성이 문제인 것입니다. 둘째 율법을 지킨다고 하는 사람들의 가증함이 진노를 불러 일으킵니다. 율법 준수자는 중심으로 곧 마음 깊은 곳에서 부터 우러나는 하나님에 대한 사랑의 표현으로 율법을 지키고 하나님을 기쁘시게 해드리는 것입니다. 그러나 사람의 마음에는 선한 것이 없기에 결코 하나님의 거룩에 도달하거나 그의 기준을 충족할 수 없습니다. 결국 사람은 율법이 정한 정죄의 판단 앞에 엎드러질 수 밖에 없는 존재입니다.

그런데 왜 이런 율법을 주셨는가라는 의문이 생깁니다. 율법은 하나님의 요구의 최하한선을 보여줍니다. 그리고 그 하한선을 밑도는 인간성의 참담함을 확인하게 합니다. 그 결과 정죄된 죄인이 할 수 있는 유일한 길 곧 하나님께 자비를 구하는 겸손한 모습으로 나아가게 만드는 역할이 율법의 긍정적 역할입니다. 사막에서 물을 구하듯 사막같이 황폐한 심령이 하나님을 구하는 것을 다윗은 사슴이 물을 찾듯 여호와를 찾는다고 노래합니다.

오늘 우리도 의와 거룩이 사라진 시대, 거짓과 포학이 만연한 시대를 살아가면서 하나님의 공의와 자비를 구하며 십자가의 의와 보혈의 치료하심을 갈급해 합니다. 나의 곤고한 심령에 오셔서 주의 성령으로 어루만져주시고 새롭게 되도록 하늘의 은혜와 자비를 부어주시길 기도합니다.

The Illusion of Legal Heirship

The pride of the Jews was rooted in the Law. Through Moses, God gave the Law so that obedience to it would demonstrate love for Him. At its heart, the Law demanded obedience—laying aside one’s own thoughts and ways in order to follow God’s ways. Yet His way proved impossible for human beings to keep. What God truly desired was not strict adherence to statutes and ordinances, but loving obedience flowing from the heart.

David, though guilty of the grave sins of murder and adultery according to the Law, understood the heart of God’s will. With a single word—that the sacrifice God desires is “a broken spirit”—all his sins were forgiven. To come before God with a contrite heart is to confess one’s sins and entrust oneself to His mercy. Paul defines this as “righteousness by faith.”

More than outward circumcision, it is the inward circumcision of the heart that qualifies one as a true child of God. A heart moved by the Spirit becomes prayer that shakes the throne of the Father. As we say, “heart to heart,” so too with God—He knows without words, yet Jesus poured out His desires with loud cries and tears. Though He was the Son, He showed us the example of obedience through suffering. We too must follow Him, taking up our cross to walk the path of life.

Romans 4:15 tells us that “the Law brings wrath.” First, before the Law, there was no standard of judgment; only conscience served as the measure. But once the Law was declared, humanity fell into an inescapable pit of condemnation. The problem was not the Law itself but the human heart. Second, those who claimed to keep the Law provoked God’s wrath by their hypocrisy. To keep the Law rightly was to express love for God from the depths of one’s heart, bringing Him delight. Yet since nothing truly good dwells in man’s heart, no one can reach God’s holiness or meet His standard. Ultimately, humanity can only fall prostrate under the judgment the Law pronounces.

Why then did God give such a Law? The Law reveals the minimum requirement of God’s holiness. It exposes the wretchedness of human nature that falls far short of even this lowest threshold. Its purpose is to lead condemned sinners to the only way left—to come humbly, seeking God’s mercy. Like one thirsting in the desert who longs for water, the barren soul seeks God. David sang of this longing: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs for You, O Lord.”

Today, in an age where righteousness and holiness have faded, and falsehood and violence prevail, we too long for God’s justice and mercy. We thirst for the righteousness of the cross and the healing power of Christ’s blood. May the Lord come into my weary heart, touch me with His Spirit, renew me, and pour out heaven’s grace and mercy upon me.
