It's the 10-year anniversary of the death of Eric Garner at the hands of New York City police, which made “I Can't Breathe” a rallying cry.
Bystander video shows Garner, who is black, gasping the phrase while locked in a police chokehold by a white officer, spurring the Black Lives Matter protests in New York and across the country.
Six years later, there was George Floyd, the black man, uttering the same exact words, while a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee to Floyd's neck, sparking a new wave of mass protests.
The officer Daniel Pantaleo was fired. Garner's family settled a lawsuit for $5.6 million.
