Experiencing the journey rather than the destination
By Jane Cooper Venturing out of your comfort zone with nothing more than a sense of adventure and some vague directions could be enough to convince anyone that the journey is more important than the destination. As an independent traveller in Korea without a lick of the local language, would you even get to your destination? Once on the road, English travel information is elusive; a lost foreigner`s call for help could be met with vacant stares or even an answer in Japanese.

Without a map or guide book, finding the arboretum or "Haeyeorim Sikmulwon" from Seoul may not be that easy. In a test of Korea`s travel-friendliness, some instructions were written down: Jamsil subway station, bus 500-1, get off at Gonjiam terminal and transfer to another bus. Sounds simple, right? Seoul`s public transportation is reliable and efficient, but only if you know where you are going. For those who don`t have the luxury of personal drivers or the budget for taxis, the subway is simple when you rely on it as part of the daily routine. But once out of the auto-pilot mode, just choosing the right train, the right station and the right exit can be enough for the blood pressure to inch up.

When choosing the platform, not all the stations are marked on the overhead signs and there are no indications of direction such as "eastbound" or "westbound." Without a map it`s easy to get on a train going the wrong way. If the ears aren`t tuned into the Korean station announcements, then looking out the window and checking the station is the only way to know where you are. But if the train is full and you are squished in the middle, away from the window, you could miss your station.

At Jamsil subway station, a polite "excuse me" doesn`t work in parting the passengers standing near the door. A few gentle yet aggressive elbow shoves are needed to get off before the doors close and the train moves on.

The subway platform has a map to guide you above ground into the local area. However, the same map in a different part of the station may be upside down - enough to send anyone in the opposite direction. Never assume that the North arrow points up; on these neighborhood maps it often points down.

The bus numbers are listed next to the upside down map and the destinations are written in Korean. Not only that, since Seoul`s bus system was completely overhauled in July 2004, it`s possible that you have been given an old number of a route that no longer exists.

Bus number 500-1 isn`t on the list.

Hunting for the bus

Taking a random exit from Jamsil station, it`s not clear where the bus stop is. The stops of the revamped color-coded bus system have all the routes listed in Korean, and since 500-1 is a long-distance bus, it isn`t part of the Seoul network.

As much as British people love to complain about the London buses, at least there are informative maps at every bus stop. London bus stops also have an index of destinations with a grid reference and corresponding bus number. And there are also detailed local maps of where the bus stops for each of the routes are. It is easy to find the bus, but the problem in London is that it takes so long for the bus to come. Seoul has the opposite problem - there are always plenty of buses, it`s just finding the right one that takes time.

Most people`s bus knowledge is usually limited to what they need to get to and from work, so passersby don`t provide any enlightenment. But it seems that a helpful-looking man could be the savior out of this bus-hunting misery.

At the nearby Lotte Department Store, he is sitting in a booth with "Always With You" written above the window. He looks like he wants to help. His thought process must have gone something like "Agh foreigner ... speaking foreign language ... I must speak a foreign language ... my foreign language is Japanese," so he responds in Japanese. When asked where bus stop for number 500-1 is, he responds "Lotte Department Store?," this doesn`t help, so he says "Lotte Hotel, that way." Maybe this is some Da Vinci Code-esque way of getting information. By going through each of the stages, maybe the final clue will come. It does. By standing outside Lotte Hotel, the 500-1 bus can be seen whizzing by. Maybe this is pure coincidence, or maybe the "Always With You" man had a greater plan in mind.

The next stage of the puzzle is to work out where the bus is coming from. By standing at a crossroads, you can check its direction and then trace the route back until you find a stop with its number on.

In this case, the long-distance-bus stop was hidden by a crowd that had gathered to watch a heated argument between two car owners over a bent wing mirror. The cars are blocking the lane and the buses bottleneck on the road. It`s difficult to read the bus information and no one seems interested in helping out. The shouting increases and the angrier of the two is shouting "ship pal" a lot, but it doesn`t seem that he`s talking about bus numbers.

The bus sign is only in Korean, so there`s no way of knowing for sure if this is the right bus. It`s possible that this is the wrong side of the road and the bus is going in the wrong direction. The bus arrives, and the Seoul transport card doesn`t work because it`s an out-of-town bus. The driver doesn`t have time to deal with the foreigner and it`s easier to let them on for free than explain how much needs to be thrown in the offering box.

On the right track?

It`s still hard to know if this is the right bus. Everything is in Korean and as the road leads out of Seoul, there are no obvious landmarks aside from the English signs of the subway stations. As the bus continues, the scenery becomes greener and the road spaces out and is dotted with the occasional garden nursery or tire yard.

Fortunately, the word "terminal" is the same in Korean, so the sound is recognizable from the ding-dong announcement. The "bus terminal" is just a small blue iron frame of a bus shelter on an empty road. One street behind is a parking area for buses. The buses don`t have a list of where they are going on the side and there is no ticket counter.

There are men sitting on benches, but none of them are waiting for a bus. They have a vacant stare and shake their heads when asked about the arboretum or "Haeyeorim Sikmulwon." The destination, which is written and pronounced in English, proves incomprehensible to the locals. One reaches for reading glasses, but they don`t help in deciphering the code.

It seems that not many foreigners come to these parts. Lotteria seems to be a safe place to eat lunch, but the sight of an "outside person" causes one local to push his nose up to the window and peer through to watch this extraordinary display of a foreigner eating a burger.

There is a list of bus routes in Korean, but no one can help. One potentially helpful English-speaking man makes a beeline for the lost-looking foreigner. He comes well within the boundaries of personal space and has a good look to check the eye color of the sight before him, and then walks off. Other pleas for help are met with a polite shake of the head, scuttling off, embarrassment and just not knowing the answer.

At this point, not knowing the current location or the final destination, it would be unwise to get in a taxi. Often taxi drivers will start driving even if they don`t know where they are going rather than admit they don`t know either.

The trail for the arboretum has gone cold, but it doesn`t matter. After all, it is the journey, not the destination that counts.

모험심과 애매한 방향 외에는 아무 것도 없이 자신이 편안할 수 있는 지역에서 과감히 벗어나는 것은 여정이 목적지보다 더 중요하다고 설득하기에 충분할 수 있다. 현지어를 하나도 모르면서 한국을 혼자 찾은 여행자인 당신은 목적지에 도착이라도 할 수 있겠는가? 일단 길을 나서면 영어로 된 여행정보는 무슨 뜻인지 알기가 어렵고 길 잃은 외국인의 도와달라는 부탁은 공허한 눈길이나 심지어는 일본어 대답이 되어 돌아온다.

지도나 안내서 없이 서울에서 “해여림식물원”을 찾기란 그렇게 쉽지가 않다. 한국이 여행자에게 얼마나 친절한 지를 살펴보면 일부 안내는 잠실지하철역, 버스 500-1, 곤지암역에서 내려 다른 버스로 갈아 탄다로 되어 있다. 아주 간단하게 들린다.

지하철에서 길 찾기 서울의 대중교통은 믿을 수 있고 효율적이지만 자신이 가고자 하는 목적지를 알 때만 그렇다. 개인 기사를 쓸 사치나 택시요금을 낼 돈이 없는 사람들에게 지하철이 매일 반복되는 생활의 일부로서 신뢰할 때는 간단하다. 하지만 일단 자동조종 모드에서 벗어나면 정확한 열차와 정확한 역 그리고 정확한 출구를 찾는 것만도 혈압이 솟구치기에 충분하다.

플랫폼을 선택할 때 머리 위 표시판에 모든 역이 다 표시되어 있지 않으며 “동쪽 방향”이나 “서쪽 방향” 등의 방향 표시도 없다. 지도가 없으면 반대 방향으로 가는 기차를 타기 십상이다. 역 이름을 불러주는 한국어 방송에 귀가 익숙하지 못 하면 창 밖을 내다보며 역을 확인하는 것이 현재 위치를 알 수 있는 유일한 방법이다. 그러나 기차가 만원이고 창문에서 멀어져 가운데 끼어 있다면 역을 놓칠 수도 있다.

지하철 잠실역에서는 공손하게 “죄송합니다”라고 해서는 문을 막고 서 있는 승객들의 틈을 비집어들 수 없다. 팔꿈치로 약간 공격적으로 파고들어야만 문이 닫히고 열차가 움직이기 전에 내릴 수 있다.

지하철 플랫폼에는 역 위 지상으로 당신을 안내할 지도가 있다. 하지만 역내 다른 곳에 있는 지도는 같은 지도인데도 위 아래가 바뀌어져 있을 수 있어 누구든 반대 방향으로 가게 만들기 충분하다. 북쪽 화살이 위쪽을 가리킬 것으로 추측하지 말라. 동네 지도에서는 아래쪽을 가리키는 경우도 많다.

버스 번호는 위 아래가 바뀐 지도 옆에 적혀 있는데 목적지는 한글로 적혀있다. 그뿐 아니라 서울의 버스 시스템은 2004년 7월에 완전히 바뀌어 더 이상 존재하지 않는 옛날 노선번호를 건네 받는 일조차 있다.

500-1번이라는 버스는 명단에 없다.


버스 잡기 잠실역에서 아무런 출구로 나오면 버스정류소가 어디 있는지 알 수 없다. 대중교통체계 개편에 따라 모든 버스정류소는 노선이 한국어로만 표시되어 있다. 그리고 500-1번 버스는 시외버스이기 때문에 도심을 벗어날 수 있다.

영국 사람들이 영국 버스 시스템에 대해 늘 불만을 늘어놓기는 하지만 적어도 영국의 모든 버스정류소에는 안내 지도가 있다. 런던의 버스정류소는 또 좌표가 표시된 목적지 색인과 그에 해당하는 버스 번호가 적혀 있는 표지가 설치되어 있다. 그리고 각 노선의 버스정류소 위치가 나와 있는 자세한 지역 지도도 있다. 타야할 버스를 찾기는 쉽지만 런던의 경우 문제는 버스 배차 간격이 매우 길다는 점이다. 서울은 그 반대의 문제를 안고 있다. 즉, 버스는 많은데 어떤 버스를 타야할지 몰라 시간을 허비하기 일쑤이다.

대부분의 사람들은 대개 자신의 출퇴근 노선 버스만 알고 있기 때문에 지나가는 행인들은 별 도움이 되지 못한다. 그러나 어떤 버스를 타야할지 몰라 고민스런 순간에는 인상 좋은 남자가 구원자가 될 수 있는 듯 보인다.

그는 롯데백화점 부근에 있었는데 창 위에 ‘항상 당신과 함께’라는 문구가 적혀 있는 부스에 앉아 있었다. 그는 남을 잘 도와줄 것 같은 인상이었다. 그는 다음과 같이 생각하고 있는 것이 분명했다. “아, 외국사람이군. 외국어를 사용할 거야. 나는 외국어로 말해야만 해. 내가 할 수 있는 외국어는 일본어지.” 따라서 그는 일본어로 대답했다. 500-1번 버스를 탈 수 있는 버스정류장이 어디냐는 질문에 대해 그는 “롯데백화점이요?”라고 대답했다. 그게 아니라고 하자 그는 “롯데호텔은 저쪽이예요”라고 말했다.

아마도 이건 소설 ‘다빈치 코드’식 정보 얻기일지 모른다. 각 단계를 모두 거쳐야 마지막 단서를 찾을 수 있는 것 말이다. 과연 그랬다. 롯데호텔 밖에서 서 있으니까 500-1번 버스가 지나하는 모습이 보였다. 이것이 우연의 일치일까 아니면 아까 그 남자가 가졌던 보다 원대한 계획 때문일까? 수수께끼의 다음 단계는 이 버스가 어느 길에서 오는지를 파악하는 일이었다. 교차로에 서서 버스가 오는 길을 파악한 다음 그 길을 거슬러 올라가 그 버스가 정차하는 버스정류소를 찾으면 된다.

그런데 구부러진 사이드 미러를 놓고 두 명의 자동차 운전자들 사이에 벌어진 언쟁을 구경하는 군중들로 인해 시외버스 정류소를 찾지 못하게 만들었다. 자동차들이 길을 막고 있었고 버스들이 도로를 가득 메웠다. 버스노선 안내판을 읽기가 힘들었지만 그 누구도 도와주려 하지 않았다. 언성은 높아졌고 화가 치밀대로 치민 두 운전자는 ‘십팔’이란 말을 여러 번 외쳐댔다. 하지만 그것이 버스 번호인 것 같지는 않아보였다.

버스 안내표시판이 한국어로만 되어 있어 버스 타기가 정말 힘들다. 타야할 도로의 반대 편에서 버스를 타서 반대 방향으로 갈 가능성도 있다. 버스가 목적지에 도착했을 때 서울 교통카드가 작동하질 않았다. 시외버스였기 때문이었다. 버스 운전사는 외국인과 상대하기가 버거웠는지 얼마의 요금을 내야 한다고 설명하지는 않고 그냥 가라고 했다.


옳게 가고 있나? 옳은 버스를 탔는지 여전히 알기가 어렵다. 모든 게 한글로 되어 있고 도로가 서울을 벗어나면 지하철역의 영어간판 외에는 위치를 확인할 만한 건축물도 없다. 버스가 계속 가면서 경치는 더욱 푸르게 변하게 도로 주변이 널찍해지면서 가끔씩 나타나는 식물원이나 타이어 야적장이 드문드문 나타난다.

다행히 “터미널”이라는 단어는 한국말에서도 똑같기 때문에 딩동 하고 나오는 방송에서 그 소리를 알아들을 수 있다. “버스 터미널”은 텅 빈 도로에 버스 정류장의 작은 푸른색 철제 프레임뿐이다. 길 뒤쪽에는 버스 주차장이 있다. 버스 측면에는 어디로 가는 지 표시도 없고 매표소도 없다.

벤치에는 남자들이 앉아 있지만 아무도 버스를 기다리지 않는다. 그들은 공허하게 쳐다보며 “해여림식물원”을 물어도 고개만 흔든다. 영어로 쓰여있고 영어로 읽히는 목적지가 현지인들은 이해하지 못 한다는 게 증명된다. 한 사람이 돋보기를 꺼냈으나 암호를 해독하는 데 도움이 되지 않는다.

이곳을 찾는 외국인이 많지 않은 것 같다. 롯데리아는 점심을 먹기에 안전한 장소인 것 같은데 “이방인”을 보자 한 현지인은 코를 유리창에 갖다 붙이고 외국인이 버거를 먹고 있는 희한한 광경을 들여다 본다.

한글로 쓰인 버스노선이 있지만 아무도 도와줄 수 없다. 도움이 될 만한 영어 사용자 한 사람이 길을 잃은 것 같아 보이는 외국인에게로 똑바로 다가온다. 그는 손이 닿을 만한 거리까지 다가와서는 상대방의 눈 색깔을 잘 쳐다보더니 사라져 버린다. 도와달라는 부탁에 공손한 머리젓기나 달아나기, 부끄러워하기 그리고 나도 몰라요로 답한다.

여기서 현재 위치나 최종 목적지를 모르는 상태에서 택시를 타는 것은 현명하지 못 하다. 택시 기사들은 자기들도 모르겠다고 대답하기 보다는 어디로 가는지도 모르면서 출발부터 하고 보는 경우가 흔히 있다.

식물원을 찾아나선 길이 식상해져 버렸지만 상관이 없다. 결국 중요한 것은 목적지가 아니라 여정이니까.
