10. 법사와 강사로서 절정을 이루다

1977년도에 『범망경』을 번역한 것을 필두로 1993년 『예불문과 반야심경』『금강경 오가해』 1994년 『금강경 강의』『한글 화엄경』(완역 12권) 1996년 『무비스님과 함께 하는 불교 공부』『천수경』『보현행원품 강의』 『나옹선사 어록』등이 쏟아져 나왔다.

무비스님은 수많은 법회의 법사로 나섰고, 라디오에서 법문을 했다.

그중에 한글로 80화엄경을 완역한 『한글 화엄경』을 1994년도에 출간한 것은 그간 공부의 결정체와 같았다. 원문 영인본 두 권과 함께 열두 권으로 풀어낸 『한글 화엄경』은 탄허, 지관, 운허스님의 해석을 하나로 녹이면서도 ‘빨랫줄 같은’ 줄글의 방대함과 일대일 번역의 어색함을 개선했다. 누구라도 쉽게 친근한 한글로 『화엄경』을 읽을 수 있게 만들었다.

여기에 힘입어서 1997년 1월, 강원의 교재용으로 한문에 일일이 과목을 붙인 한문 『화엄경』 2차본을 민족사에서 네 권으로 펴냈다.

한 품에 하나밖에 없던 제목을 매 품마다 십여 개 이상 소제목으로 뽑아서 달았다. 그렇게 과목을 쳤다는 것이 획기적이었다. 소제목을 뽑아내려면 철저한 내용 분석을 해야 했다. 창작에 가까운 어려운 일이었다.

덕분에 소제목만으로도 내용 파악이 잘되었다.

경전의 어디를 펼쳐 들어도 연결이 안되어 걱정할 필요가 없게 되었다

무비스님이 처음에는 『화엄경』 원고를 손으로 썼는데 얼마 못 가 손목에 병이 났다. 당시 새로 나온 워드프로세서를 구입했다가, 곧이어 컴퓨터가 나와서 학원에 다니며 컴퓨터를 공부해서 사용법을 익혔다. 『화엄경』의 한자들을 일일이 컴퓨터에 입력을 했다. 원고지 1만 6천장, 26개의 디스켓에 『화엄경』을 담았다.

1996년 7월 조계종 종립 대학원으로 은해사에 승가대학원이 개원되었다. 무비스님이 초대 승가대학원장이 되었다.

10. Reaching the Peak as a Dharma Teacher and Lecturer

Beginning with the translation of [The Brahmajala Sutra], a stream of publications followed in 1977. These included [Buddhist Liturgical Texts and the Heart Sutra], [The Diamond Sutra with Five Commentaries ] in 1993;

[A Lecture on the Diamond Sutra], [The Avatamsaka Sutra in Korean] (a complete 12-volume translation) in 1994;

[Buddhist Study with Mubi Seunim], [The Thousand-Hands Sutra], [A Lecture on the Chapter of Samantabhadra's Vows and Practices], [Sayings of Master Naong] in 1996.

Mubi Seunim served as a Dharma teacher for countless Dharma assemblies and gave Dharma talks on the radio.

Among these, the complete translation of the 80-volume [ Avatamsaka Sutra] into Korean, titled [Korean Avatamsaka Sutra], published in 1994, was like the culmination of all his studies.

The twelve volumes of [Korean Avatamsaka Sutra], along with two volumes of the original text's facsimile. This work was a major improvement because it blended the interpretations of great seunims (Ven. Tanheo, Jikwan, and Unheo) while fixing two big problems: the translation's strange, word-for-word feeling and the long, confusing sentences. This made it possible for anyone to easily read the [Avatamsaka Sutra] in familiar Korean.

Building on this success, in January 1997, a second edition of the Chinese [Avatamsaka Sutra], with individual subjects attached to each Chinese character for use as a textbook in Buddhist academies, was published in four volumes by Minjoksa.

Instead of just one title per chapter, this edition added more than ten sub-headings to every single chapter.

It was amazing that he added all those detailed sub-headings (or outlines) to the text.

To create the sub-headings, he had to completely and carefully analyze all of the content.

It was a difficult task, almost like creating something new.

Thanks to this, the content could be easily understood just by looking at the sub-titles. Now, there was no need to worry that you couldn't understand how a random part of the scripture connected to the rest.

Mubi Seunim first wrote the [Avatamsaka Sutra] manuscript by hand, but soon developed a wrist injury.

He first bought a newly released word processor, but soon after, computers came out. He then went to an academy, studied computers, and learned how to use them.

He manually typed every single Chinese character of the [Avatamsaka Sutra] into the computer.

In the end, he had stored the entire the [Avatamsaka Sutra] on 26 floppy disks, which was the equivalent of 16,000 pages of manuscript paper.

In July 1996, the Seungga Graduate School was established at Eunhaesa Temple as the Jogye Order's official graduate school for monks. Mubi Seunim became its first dean.
