■ dachshund : 다리 짧은 오소리(Badger)를 닮은 개라는 뜻

도마뱀과(Scincidae)는 도마뱀아목 도마뱀하목에 속하는 한 과로, 흔히 스킨크(Skink)라고 불리는 다리 짧고 비늘이 매끄러운 도마뱀들이 여기 속한다. 약 1200여 종이 속해 있으며, 도마뱀 분류 중 도마뱀붙이과(Gekkonidae)에 이어 두 번째로 큰 과이다.

도마뱀(Skink)은 장지뱀(Lizard)과 유사하지만, 장지뱀에 비해 목이 없고 다리가 매우 짧으며, 비늘이 거친 장지뱀에 비해 비늘 광택이 뺀질뺀질하다. 아예 사지가 없는 속도 있는데, 이런 속의 종들은 도마뱀이라기보다 뱀과 유사하게 생겼으며, 움직이는 방식도 뱀과 유사하게 사행 이동을 한다. 도마뱀은 보통 길고 뾰족한 꼬리를 가지고 있는데, 포식자가 붙잡았을 경우 떨어져 나간다. 떨어진 꼬리는 불완전하지만 재생 가능하다. 뭉툭한 꼬리를 가진 종은 꼬리의 재생 능력이 없다.


도마뱀은 보통 육식성이며, 특히 벌레를 잘 먹는다. 귀뚜라미, 메뚜기, 딱정벌레, 애벌레, 지렁이, 노래기, 달팽이, 괄태충, 쥐며느리, 다른 도마뱀, 작은 설치류 등 식성은 다양하다. 한편 도마뱀을 잡아먹는 동물 역시 미국너구리, 여우, 주머니쥐, 뱀, 긴코너구리, 까마귀, 고양이, 개, 왜가리, 매, 다른 도마뱀 등 다양하다.


한국에는 도마뱀(Scincella vandenburghi)과 북도마뱀(Scincella huarenensis)의 두 종이 분포한다.

■ 3대 다리 짧은 강아지


1. 웰시코기

이번 글 커버 사진의 주인공인 웰시코기는 영국 출신 목양견이다. 9세기 무렵 바이킹족이 웨일스에 데려온 개의 후손이다. ‘코기’라는 단어는 켈트족 언어로 ‘작은 개’를 뜻한다.


웰시코기는 체격이 좋고, 몸이 길고, 큰 귀에 여우를 닮은 얼굴을 지닌다. 털은 붉은색, 베이지색, 검은색 또는 흰색과 밤색이 섞인 색일 수 있다. 안타깝게도, 태어나면서 꼬리를 자르는 사례가 많다.

2. 닥스훈트(dachshund)

‘테켈'(teckel) 혹은 닥스훈트라고 불리는 이 견종 역시 다리가 짧은 개로 유명하다. 몸은 길고 다리는 짧으며 몸 전체가 갈색인 외모 탓에 ‘소시지 개’라고도 불린다.


닥스훈트는 독일 출신으로 1888년 공식적인 견종으로 등록되었다. 꼬리가 몹시 길고 주둥이는 길게 뻗었으며 큰 귀는 얼굴까지 내려온다. 검정 발톱이 눈에 띄며 털은 짧거나 길 수 있다. 안타깝게도, 척추와 갈비뼈에 문제가 있는 사례가 많다.

오소리(Badger)

breed of short-legged, long-bodied dogs, 1844, from German Dachshund (15c.), from Dachs "badger" (Old High German dahs, 11c., cognate with Middle Dutch das "badger"), from Proto-Germanic *thahsuz "badger," perhaps literally "builder, the animal that builds," in reference to its burrowing (from PIE root *teks- "to weave," also "to fabricate"), but according to Watkins "more likely" borrowed from the same PIE source as the Celtic totemic name *Tazgo- (source of Gaulish Tazgo-, Gaelic Tadhg), originally "badger."


Second element is German Hund "dog" (see hound (n.)). Probably so called because the dogs were used in badger hunts, their long, thin bodies bred to burrow into setts and draw the animal out. French taisson, Spanish texon, tejon, Italian tasso are Germanic loan words.

Within the last few years this little hound has been introduced into England, a few couple having been presented to the Queen, from Saxony. The dachshund is a long, low, and very strong hound, with full head and sweeping ears. The fore legs are somewhat bandy, and when digging their action is very mole-like. 닥스훈트(dachshund)는 몸통이 길고 사지가 짧은 독일 원산의 개로서, 원래는 오소리 사냥의 전문개였다.


어깨높이가 21~27cm, 몸무게가 7~15kg이다. 이집트로부터 건너온 오래된 개의 품종으로 보인다. 단모종·강모종·장모종 등이 있으며, 성질은 영리하고 끈기가 있어서 애완용 개로 기르고 있다. 이 견종들의 사지가 짧고, 허리가 긴 이유는 종 전체가 연골발육부전증(Achondrodysplasia)이라는 유전병을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 이 유전병은 팔, 다리의 정상적 성장은 방해하나, 허리의 성장에는 영향을 주지 않기 때문에 닥스훈트 특유의 외관형성의 중요 요인으로 알려져있다. 성격이 밝고 명랑하며 지칠줄 모르는 근성이 있어 쉬지않고 놀아주길 바란다. 닥스훈트의 경우 다리가 짧아 살이찔 경우 배가 땅에 닿을 수도 있기 때문에 적절한 운동과 식단조절로 비대해지지 않도록 조절해주는 것이 좋다.


AKC에 따르면, 닥스훈트는 미국의 개 품종들 사이에서 13위로 인기가 있다고 한다.

Dachshunds can be standard-sized (usually 16 to 32 pounds) or miniature (11 pounds or under), and come in one of three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired.

Dachshunds aren’t built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, but otherwise these tireless hounds are game for anything. Smart and vigilant, with a big-dog bark, they make fine watchdogs. Bred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness, and a bit stubborn, but their endearing nature and unique look has won millions of hearts the world over.

3. 바셋하운드

다리가 짧은 것으로 유명한 견종 중 하나로, 이름부터 프랑스어로 짧다는 뜻의 ‘바세’에서 유래했다. 프랑스 출신의 후각 수렵견으로 블러드하운드가 조상이다.


바셋하운드의 또 다른 특징으로는 긴 귀가 있는데, 땅을 쓸고 다닐 정도로 길어 쉽게 더러워진다. 체격은 좋고, 그렇게 보이지는 않지만 몸이 꽤 길어서 짧은 다리로 오를 수 없는 곳에 오르기도 한다. 이를테면 부엌의 조리대에 올라가 있기도 하다!
