The Fisherman Who Became a Croaker

Once upon a time, off the coast of Chilpo, Yeonggwang, Jeolla Province, there was an old fisherman who made a living catching croaker every day.

One day, while this old fisherman was out fishing, a goblin rose from the seawater and boarded his boat.

The goblin told him that if he made him a bowl of buckwheat jelly, he would catch more croaker, a boatful of croaker.

The old fisherman thought, "What could be so difficult about a bowl of buckwheat jelly?"

So he made a promise with the goblin to make him a bowl of buckwheat jelly.

Then, when he caught croaker, it was as if the goblin had indeed helped him. He caught a boatful of croaker.

The old fisherman said he could take the fish home and make the buckwheat jelly later. He went back out to sea to catch croaker, and the goblin saw him. He boarded the boat and demanded buckwheat jelly.

When the old fisherman said he hadn't brought it, the goblin scolded him, saying he was only interested in satisfying his own greed. Then, embracing the old fisherman, he muttered something several times.

Soon after, the old fisherman turned into a yellow corvina. The goblin threw the yellow corvina into the sea and disappeared somewhere.

The yellow corvina, believing it would become human again if it made it to land, still struggles every day to get to shore, but the waves off Chilpo never carry it back to the middle of the ocean.

조기가 된 어부 할아버지

옛날 전라도 영광 칠포 앞바다

날마다,

조기잡이를 하며 살아가는

어부 할아버지 한 분이 있었거든

이 어부 할아버지가 하루는

바다로 나가 고기를 잡고 있는데

도깨비가 바닷물 속에서 솟아오르더니

어부 할아버지 배에 올라탔지

그리고는 어부 할아버지한테

메밀묵 한 그릇 해다 주면

조기를 더 많이 잡게 해 주겠다고

조기를 배 가득 잡게 해 주겠다고 했단 말이야

어부 할아버지 생각에

그까짓 메밀묵 한 그릇 해 주는 것

뭐가 그리 어렵겠느냐며

메밀묵 한 그릇 해 주기로 도깨비와 약속을 했지

그러고 나서 조기를 잡으니

그날은 정말 도깨비의 도움이 있었던지

어부 할아버지는 조기를 많이 잡았지

배 가득 조기를 잡았지

어부 할아버지는 잡은 고기를 집에 갖다놓고

메밀묵은 나중에 해다 주면 되지 하며

바다로 다시 나와 조기를 잡고 있는데

도깨비가 배에 올라타더니 메밀묵을 내놓으라고 했지

어부 할아버지가 안 가져 왔다고 하자

도깨비가 어부 할아버지한테

자기 욕심만 채우는 놈이라고 나무라다가

어부 할아버지를 끌어안은 채 무어라고 몇 번 중얼거렸지

그러고 얼마 지나지 않아

어부 할아버지는 그만 조기가 되어 버렸지

도깨비는 그 조기를 바닷물 속으로

집어 던지고는 어디론가 사라져 버렸지

그 조기는 뭍으로 오르기만 하면 도로 사람이 될 줄 알고

요즘도 날마다 뭍으로 오르려고 온힘을 다해 헤엄쳐 오지만

칠포 앞바다 파도가 늘

그 조기를 도로 바다 한복판으로 데려다 놓지
