T: I need a helper. Who can help me?
Look! you are team A. I'm team B. Team A, first.
Ask to him, Ann can't go to school today. Guess! Why? Repeat.
(It might sound strange to call a person as a team, but I want to connect this demonstration to next real game with several teams. So, I name the volunteer as team A.)
Ss: Ann can't go to school today. Guess! Why?
00: Umm, because she has a cold.
T: I'm team B, ask to me.
Ss: Ann can't go to school today. Guess! Why?
T: Because she has a headache.
Then, look at the picture. (Showing the whole picture)
Ann can't go to school today. Why?
Ss: (After checking the whole picture) Because she has a cold.
T: That's too bad. Who is right?
Ss: Team A.
T: Lucky! Team A got some points.
(Scoring 10points for team A on the table) How many points?
Ss: 10 points.
T: Right. Look! (Writing 10 points one after another for team C like 10, 10, 10, 10, 10 ) Who wins now?
Ss: Team C.
T: Right. Wow! 50 points, team C is the winner. No cleaning after class.
(In my class, I give some students a exemption right of the cleaning after class to praise their desirable behaviors. Most of students do not like cleaning after class, this prize gives a stimulus to students.)
In my demonstration, the answers of two questions are like below.
S1) How do I win?
T: Right. Look! (Writing 10 points one after another for team C like 10, 10, 10, 10, 10 ) Now, who wins?
Ss: Team C.
T: Right. Wow! 50 points, team C is the winner. No cleaning after class.
S2) What do I get?
T: Lucky! Team A got some points.
(Scoring 10points for team A on the table) How many points?
Ss: 10 points.
1-b) Now you want to present the PARTS, MOVES, OUTCOMES and RULES of the game. In each case, you want to get the children's attention, give information, and check understanding. What does the teacher say?
I try to present the PARTS, MOVES, OUTCOMES and RULES of the game.
In each case, I present three parts with three different colors - getting attention, giving information, and checking understanding .
1) PARTS
- Look! You are team A. I'm team B. Team A, first.
2) MOVES:
- Look! This is a hidden picture.
(Showing the certain part of the picture) Guess. Who is this?
3) OUTCOMES:
- Look at the picture. (Showing the whole picture) Ann can't go to school today. Why?
- Who is right?
4) RULES:
- Ask to him, Ann can't go to school today. Guess! Why? Repeat.
- I'm team B, ask to me.
- Lucky! Team A got some points.
(Scoring 10points for team A on the table) How many points?
- Look! (Writing 10 points one after another for team C like 10, 10, 10, 10, 10 ) Who wins now?
- Wow! 50 points, team C is the winner. No cleaning after class.
1-c) Which words are too long for Sixth Graders? Which sentences are too long for Sixth Graders? Can you change the WORDS into SENTENCES? Can you change the SENTENCES into exchange?
I suppose that there are not so long words for 6th graders in this teacher's book, but 'reason' is not common but too formal for elementary school students. So, I exchanged the word for 'why' in my reconstructed data.
Furthermore, these three sentences are too long for 6th graders because the number of those words are 8 ~ even 12words.
Therefore, I tried to change them into simpler sentences or devide them by several shorter sentences in my data.
For example,
- Let me show you how to do it. → (Just) Look! (Also, I show how to play through the demonstration.)
- Look at the screen and guess the reason with your team members.
→ Look.(Showing the certain part of the picture) This is a hidden picture.
Ann can't go to school today. Guess! Why?
- If you have the most points, you are the winner.
→ Wow! 50 points, team C is the winner.
