T: You look really happy. Is it because everyone said it was the best barbecue they've ever been to?
G: Well, that definitely perked me up after spending the day running back and forth from the kitchen to the back yard.
T: Now that you mention it, you did spend more time running around than socializing.
G: You know I'm a people pleaser. It's in my nature.
T: You always had a clean glass or extra napkin at the drop of a hat. You were amazing.
G: Thanks, honey. It was a really good day.
M: I found a car rental agency that has vans. But we have to drop it off in Rome instead of Napoles, where we fly home from.
A: In that case, we can book a hotel room for the last two nights and take a train to Napoles.
M: I'm sure we'll be ready for a proper bed by then./ A: To be on the safe side, keep the van for an extra day.
M: Sure, just in case we want to take a short trip outside of Rome./ A: You read my mind!
J: You're probably going to laugh at me when tell you what happened.
L: Let me guess: it was a foster fail. You decided to adopt Brian permanently.
J: To make long story short, when this shelter called and said they had someone interested in Brian, I started crying. I couldn't give him up.
L: It's obvious you have his best interested at heart. There's nothing to be ashamed of.
J: My friend Maggie said she had a feeling that would happen.
L: Well, I'm excited to meet Brian. Maybe I can bring Harley with me.
Z: I'm really nervous, Ivan. Thanks for coming with me to the race./ I: I see you've replaced your worn-out shoes.
I hope you ran in them a little bit. There's nothing worse than getting blisters during a race.
Z: Yeah, I broke them in around my neighborhood.
I: Then you're going to do great. Remember, don't feel like you have to catch up to everyone who passes you. Run your own race!
Z: I will. I remember everything you taught me./ I: I'll be waiting for you at the finish! Good luck!
M: Did you read the email this morning? I'm glad I started looking for a new job already.
B: I can't believe they were in merger talks this whole time and didn't tell us!
M: They should have told our department that we were likely to get laid off.
B: I wish I had taken your advice two weeks ago and put together a plan B.
M: You're the best programmer I know. You'll bounce back in no time.
B: At least I'll have my severance pay to cover my expenses for a while.
When we make mistakes, it can be easy to let our inner critic take over.
It's precisely during these times when we need to not only be strong, but also be kind-compassion: First, think about a time when you missed up.
Maybe you made a costly mistake at work or said something mean to someone.
Now imagine that your friend did those things. What would you say to him or her? It would probably be something kind.
Now, look in the mirror and say those things to yourself. If it lifted your spirits, you did it correctly.
