sat >> set 이렇게 고쳐야 하구요.
저는 박스 위에 앉았다고 생각을 해서..
seated himself 로 바꿨거든요;
해설: seated himself 로 바꾸려면 뒤에 전치사 on 이 필요합니다. 그러나 이럴 경우 뒤에 나오는 부사 down과는 의미적으로나 형태적으로 호응관계를 맺을 수 없습니다. sat 을 set 으로 바꾸어 set down(내려 놓다)의 형태와 의미관계를 맞추어야 합니다^^

해설: 수식을 받는 information이 저장되는 수동의 의미이므로 be stored 혹은 storing이 옳습니다. a * need, want, require, deserve 는 능동의 동명사형태로 수동의 의미를 갖습니다.
ex. The problem deserves to be solved. = The problem deserves solving.
(그 문제는 풀어볼만한 가치가 있다.)

The last passage from an essay in James Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son. The author begins the essay in 1943 with an account of driving to his father's funeral through what he calls a "wilderness of smashed plate glass". He then deftly walks us through the history of Harlem race riots, while at the same time, attempts to come to grips with his own experience of being alienated from both his father and his country. By the end of the essay, he emerges victorious over both the bitterness that engulfed his father's life and the racial hatred that threatens his own. "hatred, which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man who hated..." He then concludes with this passage: "It began to seem that one would have to hold in mind two ideas which seemed to be in opposition. The first idea was acceptance, the acceptance totally without rancor, of life as it is, and men as they are: in the light of this idea, it goes without saying that injustice is a commonplace. He puts forth the idea that "the wilderness is an antidote for the alienation experienced by urban people" It reminds me that a wilderness is not a national park or a protected space but a place completely wild and hostile that has a healing effect. [Theresa]

How do we stay centered in the peace of Christ in the midst of activism? The work of advocating for justice within an institution is messy and draining. It requires that we speak our truths—truths that directly conflict with the Truth as others perceive it. It requires relentless effort and lots of time and a faith that’s sometimes difficult to sustain. People can be so mean! Political bodies are so unwieldy! It’s too easy to grow resentful or despairing and forget our foundation in love.
Whenever I struggle with this balance, I consider an essay by James Baldwin called “Notes of a Native Son.” In it he describes the Harlem race riots of the early 1940s and the stinging racial bitterness he inherited from his father. The essay closes with these words: “ It began to seem that one would have to hold in the mind forever two ideas which seemed to be in opposition. I imagine James Baldwin with his arms outstretched, holding his fierce commitment to justice in one hand and an incomprehensible acceptance of and love for humanity in the other. What a balancing act! But this is precisely the paradox Jesus embodied. The reign of God is already here, and we must work like mad to bring it about. When we tip toward complacency, we need a good dose of reality to get us on our feet, protesting. When we tip toward burn-out or bitterness, we need a generous heart and the reminder of Christ’s abiding love, even here, even now. May love guide, measure, and sustain our work today.

해설: 불의한 세상을 그대로 받아들이자는 것과 그러한 불의와 맞서 싸워야 하는 것은 이 세상에 같이 존재할 수 없다가 아니라(즉 incompatible)이 아니라 어쩔 수 없이 받아들여야 하는 양립성을 갖고 있다는 것(mutually constitutive) 즉, competitive co-existence (경쟁적 공존)이라 할 수 있습니다. 선생님이 제시한 황야의 비유를 참조하길... 뭐랄까 황야를 놓고서는 이런 표현이 떠오르네요. Duality of mind(마음의 이중성)라고나 할까...요^^
