A Tale of Two Kingdoms
The requirements for a kingdom are a king, people, and territory. Without a king, there is anarchy; without people, one is merely a landowner with excessive self-consciousness; without territory, one becomes a refugee. The foundation of God’s Kingdom is God, the King, His appointed representative, and the people who obey Him. The territory is found in the very existence of the people themselves. This is what we call the Church.
In the Old Testament, the land of Canaan—once the symbol of blessing—shifted from being a physical place to a spiritual reality. When this transition occurs, the Kingdom of Heaven is established within the heart. The Law and circumcision are no longer interpreted in a merely physical sense; circumcision of the heart means a movement from the material realm into the spiritual realm. This gathering of hearts is the Church, and its dwelling is not in this world but in the heavenly realm. Therefore, we live as pilgrims, with our feet set on the earth yet our hearts fixed upon heaven.
Scripture does not speak of sin and righteousness as abstract concepts but reveals them through persons. Sin is embodied in Satan, who wields its power, while righteousness is revealed in Jesus, who came to fulfill the Father’s will on earth. Thus, the clash between two kingdoms is inevitable. Even within one household, citizens of two different kingdoms may dwell together. It is a case of “same bed, different dreams,” leading to strife and division. Eventually, one will be taken while another is left—one at the mill, one asleep, yet separated at the call.
The citizens of heaven were once under Adam, groaning beneath the reign of sin. But when Jesus broke the yoke of sin and set us free, those enslaved to Satan’s dominion were liberated and came under a new King. Though made free, Paul declared himself once more a slave of Christ. This reflects the Old Testament ritual of piercing the ear at the doorpost (Exodus 21:6; Deuteronomy 15:17)—a slave who, out of love for his wife and children, chooses lifelong service. In the same way, out of deep love for the family of God, the Church, we offer ourselves willingly in sacrificial devotion.
Through the disobedience of one man, all were brought under death. Through the obedience and sacrifice of another, life and grace are freely given to us. On that day, the world where sin once reigned will be transformed into a land of peace, where obedient people serve Jesus, the King of righteousness.
