Zelkova Tree II
by D.J. YOON
At the entrance to our neighborhood
Stands the Zelkova Tree.
Its leaves wave gently in the breeze,
Smiling as it welcomes me.
Even when my friends wander far,
After school I come again.
Just standing by the Zelkova Tree
Fills my heart with calm.
With wide and gentle hands,
It pats my weary shoulders.
Cheer up, cheer up! it whispers,
Like the sunshine of spring.
When I return home,
I quietly say inside,
Thank you, Zelkova Tree.
Thank you!
And my heart grows strong.
Somehow, along the way,
The Zelkova Tree and I
Became true companions,
Trusting each other deeply.
Appreciation Review 感想
This poem, My Friend, the Zelkova Tree, beautifully captures the warmth and comfort a child can find in nature’s quiet presence.
Through gentle imagery and simple, flowing language, the poem shows how the Zelkova tree becomes more than just part of the neighborhood — it becomes a loyal friend and source of encouragement. The repeated sense of gratitude and the tree’s whispered cheer bring out a hopeful, uplifting tone that children can easily connect with. At its heart, the poem celebrates friendship, trust, and the healing power of nature, making it both tender and inspiring for young readers.
