욕망이나 명성보다는 생명을 추구하는 살아감! 여기서 말하는 생명이란 하느님이 내신 모든 저마다의 낱생명과 온생명global life, 그리고 영원한 생명을 포함한다.

그리스도인들은 이를 매순간 고백하고 몸으로 익히며 그렇게 살아가는 사람들이다.

생활에 반드시 필요한 재화나 용역을 물론 힘써 구해야 할 것이다. 결핍이 지나치고 오래 지속되면 생명에 치명적일 수 있을 것이며, 하느님이 주신 자유까지도 앗아가버릴 것이다.

구원과 해방의 열망이란, 바로 이 생명에 대한 것이다. '나의 생명'을 '타자의 생명'에 견줄 명분은 없다!

그러나 사람들이 모인 곳에 자원이 한쪽으로 쏠린다.

세계는 생명 중심이 아니라 자원을 더 많이 가진 사람들 중심으로 다시 짜인다.

거기 공명심과 명예욕, 지배의 욕망이 싹튼다. 이런 욕망을 만족시켜주는 자원이나 자본, 재능이나 힘이 타자들에게 꼭 그만큼의 손실이나 손상을 입힐 수 있다는 것! 이를 그리스도인들과 그 공동체는 잊어서는 안 된다. 타자에게 돌아가야 할 몫이 극소수의 사람들에게 쏠려서는, 이를 지켜내려는 또 다른 욕망과 빼앗기지 않으려는 불안을 불러올 뿐이다.  
 
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."

A living that pursues life rather than greed or fame! The life we speak of here includes every individual life given by God, global life, and eternal life. Christians are people who confess this at every moment, practice it, and live accordingly. Of course, we must strive to obtain the goods and services essential to life. Excessive and prolonged deprivation can be fatal to life and even rob us of the freedom God has given us. The yearning for salvation and liberation is precisely this life. There is no justification for comparing "my life" to "the life of another." However, where people gather, resources tend to be concentrated. The world is reorganized around those with more resources, not around life itself. There, pride, prestige, and the desire for dominance sprout. The resources, capital, talent, and power that satisfy these desires can inflict just as much loss or damage on others! Christians and their communities must not forget this. When the portion that should belong to others is concentrated in the hands of a few, it only breeds another desire to protect it and an anxiety to keep it from being taken away.
