The number of foreign workers in Korea surpassed 1.1 million in 2025 to reach a record high, with the proportion of employed international students also sharply up, a survey showed Thursday.

한국에 거주하는 외국인 근로자 수가 2025년 110만 명을 넘어 사상 최고치를 경신할 것으로 예상된다는 조사 결과가 목요일 발표됐다. 특히 유학생 취업률도 크게 증가한 것으로 나타났다.

As of May, there were 1.69 million foreigners aged 15 or older residing in Korea, up 8.4 percent from a year earlier, according to the survey conducted by the Ministry of Data and Statistics.

통계청 조사에 따르면 5월 기준 한국에 거주하는 15세 이상 외국인은 169만 명으로 전년 동기 대비 8.4% 증가했다.

Among them, more than 1.1 million people were employed, rising 9.8 percent on-year. The figure was the highest since the ministry began compiling such data in 2017.

이 중 110만 명 이상이 취업 상태이며, 이는 전년 동기 대비 9.8% 증가한 수치다. 이 수치는 해당 부처가 2017년부터 관련 자료를 집계하기 시작한 이후 최고치이다.

Of those employed, the number of international students jumped by 23,000, or 71.8 percent, to 56,000 as the overall number of students coming to study in Korea increased amid the global popularity of Korean culture and government policies to attract more international students.

취업자 중 외국인 유학생 수는 23,000명(71.8%) 증가한 56,000명을 기록했는데, 이는 한국 문화의 세계적인 인기와 외국인 유학생 유치를 위한 정부 정책으로 한국을 찾는 전체 유학생 수가 증가했기 때문이다.

The number of non-professional workers rose 6.1 percent to 321,000 and professional workers climbed 25.7 percent to 82,000, while the number of workers with permanent residence visas went up 17.1 percent to 123,000.

비전문직 종사자 수는 6.1% 증가한 321,000명, 전문직 종사자 수는 25.7% 증가한 82,000명, 영주권 소지자 수는 17.1% 증가한 123,000명을 기록했다.

By nationality, there were 341,000 Chinese nationals with ethnic Korean background working here, 149,000 Vietnamese workers and 54,000 Chinese workers.

국적별로는 한국계 중국인 341,000명, 베트남인 149,000명, 중국인 54,000명이 근무하고 있다.

By age, some 33 percent of foreign workers here were in their 30s, followed by 25.7 percent aged between 15 and 29, and 18.7 percent in their 40s.

연령별로는 30대가 약 33%, 15~29세가 25.7%, 40대가 18.7%를 차지했다.

Nearly 45 percent of all foreign workers in Korea were in the manufacturing and mining industries, while 20.4 percent were in the retail, wholesale, accommodation and food services sectors.

한국에 있는 외국인 근로자 중 약 45%는 제조업 및 광업 분야에 종사했고, 20.4%는 소매, 도매, 숙박 및 음식 서비스업에 종사했다.

Some nine percent had jobs in the agro-fisheries sector and another nine percent had jobs in the construction sector.

농수산 분야와 건설업에 종사하는 외국인 근로자는 각각 약 9%였다.

The employment rate of foreigners came to 65.5 percent this year, up 0.8 percentage point from 2024, while the unemployment rate also added 0.7 percentage point to 6.4 percent.

올해 외국인 고용률은 65.5%로 2024년 대비 0.8%포인트 상승했으며, 실업률 또한 0.7%포인트 상승한 6.4%를 기록했다.

More than half of foreign wage workers received an average monthly salary of between 2 million won ($1,353) and 3 million won, while 36.9 percent had a monthly wage of over 3 million won.

외국인 근로자의 절반 이상이 월평균 200만 원(1,353달러)에서 300만 원 사이의 급여를 받았으며, 36.9%는 월 300만 원 이상의 급여를 받았다.

Nearly 70 percent of the wage workers said they were satisfied with their job here. Meanwhile, the number of foreigners aged 15 or above granted naturalization in Korea stood at 52,000 this year, up 1,000 from 2024, according to the survey.
