Opening Statement:
As of right now we have not completed our trade with Portland. Shareef has signed a contract with us but it is contingent upon him passing a physical. As of right now that has not transpired. Don’t read anything into it as to whether he will or won’t pass it, but as of right now it has not happened.(이와 관련된 어떤 다른 소식도 사실과는 관련 없으며, 중요한건 오늘까지 샤립의 트레이드는 결코 진행되지 않았다는 의미입니다.) We are getting other opinions and are in the process of doing that now. When that is completed, I don’t know the timing, but we have until August 12 to complete the trade. Our trade exception expires on August 9th so we do have some time with it but we would like to get it done as quickly as we can. As of right now the trade has not been completed because he has not passed his physical.
Can you tell us what the next step is?
RT: We are getting a second opinion, maybe several opinions(다른 여러가지 선택을 고려한다는 의미입니다.
In the past he has had some knee issues. What element of the physical did he not pass?
RT: He had a knee operation when he was in high school. He’s never missed a game with a knee problem in the NBA. He’s never missed a practice or a game. The only thing he has missed any games for in the NBA was for an elbow operation that he had last year. He missed some games and came back and played the last 31 games. I’m not at liberty to discuss specific elements of the physical.(무릎과 팔꿈치에 대해는 명확하게 알고 있다는 의미는 아마 다른 부위에 이상이 있다는 얘기가 아닌가 생각됩니다.) We are not allowed to do that so I can’t address specifically what the issue is.
How disappointed are you with the news?
RT: It was a shock. We had scheduled a press conference. We did not think there was going to be anything wrong whatsoever. I was shocked by it. As I stated earlier, we’ll gather all the information and then make what ever decision that we end up making.
Have you spoken to him?
RT: Yes. He went back to Atlanta but I spoke to him several times yesterday.
Was he as surprised as you were?
RT: Yes.
Is there any reason why there is no announcement for Jeff McInnis as well?
RT: Jeff definitely will be here. It’s just a matter of how he’s signed. I wouldn’t say it’s a semantic thing but it’s a matter of how we end up signing him. If we don’t use our trade exception, maybe we will use it in another way. But McInnis is merely a matter of what form we do it, but he definitely will be here.
Do you have a positive outlook on this or do you believe this will not be able to be completed?
RT: I’m optimistic about it. I think when we get all the information that we will gather, this certainly has a good opportunity of going through.
How quickly do you want this to happen?
RT: You would like to do it as quickly as you can because the trade exception expires on the 9th. We have to make to make a decision about the trade by the 12th. So there is a time element involved.
Was this an injury that happened before or was this was something totally new on the radar?
RT: It was something that we were certainly unaware of. He was evidently unaware of it also.
Do you have a sense if Portland was aware of it?
RT: To my knowledge, the only thing Portland said was, when the doctors talk with doctors and trainers talk with trainers, the only problem he had there was his elbow. Many players in the league ice various areas of their bodies. He’s missed no games in his NBA career due to any other injury with the exception of his elbow.
Is there something that can be done as soon as today to get completed?
RT: It could, but it probably will play out over the next few days.
Are you going to look at other big men at this point just in case this doesn’t pan out?
RT: If in fact this doesn’t pan out for us we certainly will look at others.
If he is in Atlanta are there plans to examine him there?
RT: I don’t want to divulge exactly what is being done. We are soliciting other opinions and when we have something then we will make a statement about (divulge는 폭로하겠다는 말인데...state나 announce라는 단어를 안 쓰고 이런 말을 한건 좀 냄새가 풀풀 나는 것 같습니다.)
Are there any big men left of a decent caliber?
RT: Well not of that caliber, certainly no.
When did you find out?
RT: Yesterday, late in the day yesterday.
Are Cliff and Jeff done as far as passing physicals?
RT: Yes. Cliff is signed. Both of them passed physicals. As I said for as far as Jeff goes, it’s just a matter of how we sign him. We have to keep some options open but he definitely will be here.
If something happens that you can’t complete the trade by the 7th, and then you have two days to use your trade exception?
RT: It’s really up to us. If we were to say that we do not want to complete the trade because of something that came about during the physical then we would have two days to use our trade exception.
Can you give us some more insight of why you are optimistic that it will go through?
RT: I’m one of those people that think things are going to work out. He’s never missed any games for anything other than his elbow. He practices and he’s been working out all summer. He’s had no problems at all, so I am hopeful that it will work out.
Sometimes things are put in a contract if you agree to it and they agree to it that you can work around it if someone fails a physical.
RT: He’s already signed a contract. He signed a normal NBA contract. So that is already done. You can make amendments from time to time about certain things but I don’t want to speculate what might happen here.
Is there anyway you can change the deal?
RT: No, the deal will either go through as it has already been done or it won’t.
Was this a shock?
RT: It was because it was something that wasn’t anticipated. It was something that he has never missed a game for. He practices everyday and if you talk to anybody anywhere he has ever been, he practices everyday, and he plays everyday, plays everyday in the summer. So it was a shock.
You feel that this is something that he was unaware of, something that they weren’t hiding?
RT: Yes, I don’t want to cast any blame at all on Portland or on him. This was just something that showed up.
On the impact of Shareef:
RT: Lets see how this plays out first before I have any comments about optimism or not, obviously it doesn’t work out favorably, he was a big piece to our puzzle and a quality player. If we don’t complete the trade, we’ve lost a quality player. (obviously it doesn’t work out favorably라는 말이 다 말해주는군요.)
What do you say to Net Fans?
RT: I would say hang in there, let’s see what transpires when we get all the information. Obviously, we did have a press conference scheduled, and there has to be an explanation on why we aren’t having it. It was not anticipated that there would be any problem at all and now we have to see what happens.
Are you confident that if something doesn’t work out with Shareef that you’ll be able to use the trade exception, especially on such short notice?
RT: I don’t have a comment about that. We’ll certainly try to do everything we can if that’s the way it turns out. You can’t use those things because you want to. You have to have somebody to deal with and it took a long time to make a deal with Portland. In this case the time frame would be much shorter.
You say you are optimistic. Would you give us 70-80% that you think given next week that this thing is still going to happen?
RT: No, I just think its going to work out, because he’s been playing for nine years and he’s never missed games. This guys been a real warrior and to me it will end up working out.
Is there a time frame on this second opinion?
RT: I don’t know but we are trying to get things moving as rapidly as we can and hopefully we’ll know as quickly as we can. But there is no time frame. It has to be done by the 12th.
Have you started looking at other options or will you wait until you get all the information?
RT: We’ve started looking at other options, because players we may have an interest in are either signing everyday or they are about to sign. So we have to look at what our alternatives are.
When somebody fails this test, is it because it’s something they physically can’t do or is it because of whatever comes back like x-rays?
RT: It’s not like can you jump up and touch a rim or that kind of test. It’s a physical, when you get players in trades; you always give them a physical. And from time to time, it doesn’t happen often, but every now and then it does where trades are undone because of something that showed up. Sometimes, normally it happens with maybe a pre-existing condition and you’re doctor looks at and says ‘I don’t think you should do this.’ In this case, it was something that nobody anticipated. That makes it a little bit different.
After going through Alonzo’s health condition and Chris Childs. How gun shy are you about maybe committing this amount of money into Shareef, if maybe there is something potentially wrong?
RT: You have to look at this very closely and try to get as much information as you can and make as an informed decision as you can. That is all you can do.
Is it always a cut and dry decision?
RT: It’s not always cut and dry because different people react differently to different stresses physically. If a guy can play everyday and has been playing everyday and his performance hasn’t suffered from it then you have to take that into consideration. We’ll get all the information that we can get and then we’ll make as an informed decision as we can.
RT: We are getting a second opinion, maybe several opinions, but we are getting another opinion <--- 이건 다른 선택사항을 고려한다는게 아니라 다른 의사들의 소견을 들어볼려고 한다는거 같은데요...
