THE TRAGIC FLAW  비극적 결함

2 Chronicles 26:3-15  

His fame spread far and wide,

for he was marvelously helped till he became strong.

                                                       —2 Chronicles 26:15

그의 이름이 멀리 퍼짐은 기이한 도우심을 얻어 강성하여짐이었더라

                                                                                -역대하 26:15

문학작품에서 비극적 결함이란 이야기의 주인공을 몰락으로 이끄는 성격상의 특징을 말합니다.

열여섯 살에 유다의 왕이 되었던 웃시야가 바로 그 경우였습니다.

그는 여러 해 동안 주님을 찾았고,

그러는 중에 하나님은 그가 크게 성공하도록 하셨습니다(대하 26:4-5).

그렇지만, “그 이름이 멀리 퍼짐은 기이한 도우심을 얻어 강성하여짐이었더라

그가 강성하여지매 그의 마음이 교만하여…범죄하게”(15-16절) 되면서 모든 것이 달라졌습니다.

In literature, a tragic flaw is a character trait

that causes the downfall of a story’s hero.

That was true of Uzziah,

who was crowned king of Judah at age 16.

For many years, he sought the Lord; and while he did,

God gave him great success.

But things changed when

“his fame spread far and wide,

for he was marvelously helped till he became strong.

But when he was strong his heart was lifted up,

to his destruction”.

웃시야가 주님의 전의 향단에 분향하러 들어갔습니다(16절).

그것은 공개적으로 하나님의 법을 거역하는 것이었습니다.

아마도 교만이 그로 하여금 하나님의 법은 자기를 제외한 모든 사람에게만 적용된다고

확신을 주었던 것 같습니다.

웃시야가 그의 행위가 옳지 않다고 말하는 제사장들에게 분노하자,

 하나님께서 그가 나병에 걸리게 하셨습니다(18-20절).

Uzziah entered the temple of the Lord

to burn incense on the altar,

openly defying God’s decree.

Perhaps pride convinced him

that God’s rules applied to everyone except him.

When Uzziah raged against the priests

who told him this was not right,

the Lord struck him with leprosy.

문학작품이나 실제 삶에서, 훌륭한 명성을 얻은 사람이

불명예로 떨어지고 힘들어하는 것을 우리는 얼마나 자주 보는지 모릅니다.

 “웃시야 왕이 죽는 날까지 나병환자가 되었고…여호와의 전에서 끊어져 별궁에 살았으므로”(21절).

In literature and in life,

how often we see a person of good reputation fall

from honor into disgrace and suffering.

“King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death.

He dwelt in an isolated house, . . .

cut off from the house of the Lord”.

칭찬의 꿀이 교만의 독이 되는 것을 막는 유일한 길은 겸손한 마음으로 주님만을 따르는 것입니다.

The only way we can prevent the nectar of praise

from becoming the poison of pride is by following the Lord

with a humble heart.                            —David McCasland

겸손은 여간해서는 얻기 힘든 붙잡기 힘든 영예라 하나님의 아들이 하셨듯이 섬길 때 하나님이 보시기에 겸손하리라 `도가니로 은을, 풀무로 금을, 칭찬으로 사람을 단련하느니라 -잠언 27:21
