견우와 직녀

There once was a king in the heavens. 옛날 하늘나라에 임금이 한 분 사셨습니다 He had a pretty daughter. 임금님께는 예쁜 딸이 하나 있었죠. They called her 'Jick Nyo'. 사람들은 그녀를 '직녀'라 했습니다 (Jick Nyo means a woman who weaves cloth). (직녀는 베를 짜는 여자라는 뜻입니다.) She grew up to be a young woman. 직녀가 자라나서 되어 이제 혼인할 때가 되었습니다. So the king looked for a young man to marry her. 임금님은 그녀와 결혼할 만한 청년을 구했습니다. He found a young man called 'Gyun Woo'. 임금님이 한 사람을 찾았는데 그는 '견우'라 불리웠습니다. (견우는 소를 치는 사람이라는 뜻입니다). (Gyun Woo means a man who herds cattle). Gyun Woo had liked cattle since he was young 견우는 어릴 적부터 소를 좋아했습니다. He always rode on the back of a cow. 그는 언제나 소를 타고 다녔습니다. They got married and lived in the castle. 견우와 직녀는 결혼하여 대궐에 살게 되었습니다. Jick Nyo and Gyun Woo played all the time, and did not work. 견우와 직녀는 놀기만 했지 일은 하지 않았습니다. Sometimes Gyun Woo rode in the royal garden 어떤 때는 견우는 대궐 안 정원에서 소를 타고 다녔죠. This made a mess in the garden. 그래서 정원을 매우 더렵혔어요. The king became angry. 결국 임금님은 화가 났어요. "You two must be punished,"said the king "너희 둘은 벌을 받아야 겠다." "Everyone else is working hard, but you two are just playing." "모두들 열심히 일하는데 너희 둘은 놀기만 하는구나." "Gyun Woo, you must go live in the east." "견우, 너는 동쪽에 가 살아야 한다." "Jick Nyo, you must go live in the west." "그리고 직녀, 너는 서쪽에 가 살아라." The angry king told them to live apart. 화가 난 임금님은 그들에게 그렇게 떨어져 살라고 말했어요. Jick Nyo cried and begged the king. 직녀는 울면서 임금님께 빌었어요. But the king did not change his mind. 하지만 임금님은 마음을 바꾸지 않았습니다. They had to do as the king ordered Gyun Woo had to leave for the far away lands in the east. 그들은 결국 임금님의 명령대로 견우는 머나먼 동쪽으로 가고 And Jick Nyo had to go to the far away lands in the west. 직녀는 머나먼 서쪽 땅으로 가야 했습니다. "You can only see each other once a year." the king said. "너희들은 일년에 한 번씩만 만날 수 있다." 임금님이 말했어요. "Go to the Milky Way river on the seventh day in July." "칠월 칠석 날에 은하수로 가거라." Gyun Woo and Jick Nyo lived in sadness. 견우와 직녀는 슬픔 속에 살았습니다. It was heart breaking for both of them. 두 사람은 가슴이 메어지는 것 같았습니다. They loved each other so much. 둘이는 너무나 사랑했기 때문입니다. At last a year had gone by. 마침내 일년이 지났어요. Both Gyun Woo and Jick Nyo hurried to the Milky Way. 견우와 직녀는 은하수로 달려갔습니다. They were dying to see each other. 둘이는 너무나 보고 싶어서 죽을 지경이었죠. To them, one year was like a thousand years. 그들에게는 마치 일년이 천년 같았습니다. Gyun Woo and Jick Nyo both 견우와 직녀는 shouted out their names 강 건너에서 서로의 across the river. 이름을 불렀습니다 They wanted to tell each other how sad they had been. 서로는 그 동안 얼마나 슬펐는지 말하고 싶었어요. But the river was too wide. 하지만 그러기엔 강이 너무 넓었어요. They could hardly see each other's faces. 서로의 얼굴조차 알아보기 힘들었습니다. Their tears fell in the Milky Way and on land. 그들의 눈물이 은하수에 흘러 넘쳐 땅까지 흘러왔습니다 The tears turned into a big rain storm. 눈물은 큰 홍수로 변했죠. The birds of the land became worried. 그 일은 온 땅의 새들에게 큰 걱정거리가 되었습니다 "My goodness, we are in big trouble." "우리 정말 큰일 났습니다." "If we don't do anything, everything will wash away." "이렇게 가만히 있다간 몽땅 다 떠내려가게 생겼습니다." "There is only one way to stop the rain." "비를 멈추게 하는 방법은 하나 밖에 없습니다." "Yes, we must help Gyun Woo and Jick Nyo to cross the river." "그래요. 견우와 직녀가 강을 건너도록 도와야만 합니다." "Then we need to make a bridge across the Milky Way." "그렇다면 은하수에 다리를 놔야 할텐데." "But it is so high up..." "워낙 높은 곳이라..... "The Crows and Jays can fly very high," the wise pigeon said. "까마귀님과 까치님이 높이 날 수 있잖아요." 지혜로운 비들기가 말했어요. "Crows and Jays. would you please build a bridge across the Milky Way?" "까마귀님과 까치님 은하수에 다리를 놓을 수 있겠습니까?" "Yes, we will try," said the Crows and Jays. "예, 해보죠." 까마귀와 까치가 대답했습니다. A year passed and it became the seventh day of July. 또 일년이 지나 칠월 칠석이 되었습니다. All the Crows and the Jays in the world gathered. 온 세상에 있는 까마귀와 까치가 모였습니다. They flew high up to the Milky Way. 그들은 높이높이 은하수까지 날아갔습니다. They lined up across the river, and flapped their wings to make a bridge. 강가에 나란히 일렬로 줄지어 날개를 파닥여 다리를 만들었습니다. At last Gyun Woo and Jick Nyo walked across the river. 마침내 견우와 직녀가 강을 건넜습니다 From then on every year on the seventh day of July, 이 후로부터 매년 칠월 칠석 날이면 Crows and Jays built the bridge across the Milky Way. 까마귀와 까치가 은하수에 다리를 놓습니다. And there were no more floods. 그래서 더 이상 홍수가 나지 않았습니다 This bridge was called "Ojack-kyo". a bridge built by Crows and Jays. 까마귀와 까치가 놓은 이 다리를 오작교라 합니다.
