원어민들도 혼동하는 typical과 average

원어민들은 typical과 average를 자주 혼동합니다.

자주 말씀 드리지만 원어민들이라고 영어를 다 잘 하는 것은 아닙니다. “영어는 그들의 언어니까 당연히 잘 하겠지.”라고 생각하시는 분들이 많지만 실상은 그렇지 않습니다. 특히 영작 (composition)을 시켜 보면 놀랄 정도로 (?) 못하는 원어민들이 많아요. 예를 들어 대학교 1학년 영작 시간에 제출된 글들을 읽어보면 그 친구들이 얼마나 ‘문법’과 ‘단어’에 약한지 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.
본론으로 돌아가서 원어민들이 자주 틀리는 ‘typical’과 ‘average’의 용법을 살펴 보겠습니다. 먼저 average와 typical의 차이를 알아 보겠습니다.  

1. average:  보통의, 평범한 (not special or unusual, of the usual standard or level)
-> 형용사 average 뒤에는 기준이 되는 개념이 나와야 합니다. ‘average height (평균키), average weight (평균무게), average intelligence (평균지능)’ 처럼 말이죠.

2. typical: 전형적인, 상징적인 (having the same appearance, behavior, or characteristics as a particular type of person or thing )

아래 내용을 보고 함께 연구해 보겠습니다.

1. The article says about average Korean people and their language.
2. John speaks like an average car dealer.  
3. Mrs. Kim is an average Korean housewife.  
4. Korean teenagers’ average of hours spent playing video games has increased.
5. For an elementary school teacher, the average of salary is $1,800.

해설 및 번역:
1. 문맥상 ‘average Korean people and their language (평균 한국인과 그들의 언어)’라는 표현이 어색합니다. ‘전형적인 한국인과 그들의 언어’라고 해야 자연스럽습니다.
-> The article says about typical Korean people and their language.
번역: 그 기사는 전형적인 한국인과 그들의 언어를 다루고 있다.

2. 이 글도 ‘평균적인 자동차 매매상’보다는 ‘전형적인 자동차 매매상’이라고 하는 것이 더 자연스럽습니다.
-> John speaks like a typical car dealer.
번역: 존은 전형적인 자동차 매매상처럼 말한다.

3.  이 표현도 ‘전형적인 주부’라는 표현이 자연스럽습니다.
-> Mrs. Kim is a typical Korean housewife.
번역: Mrs. Kim은 전형적인 한국 주부이다.

4. average가 이 문장에서처럼 단독으로 쓰일 때는 ‘The average of 75 percent’처럼 average 다음에 숫자의 개념이 나와야 합니다.  
-> Korean teenagers’ average number of hours spent playing video games has increased.
번역: 한국 청소년들이 비디오 게임에 할애하는 평균 시간이 늘어나고 있다.
  
5. 평균 봉급은 ‘average salary’입니다.
-> For the elementary school teachers, the average salary is $1,800.
번역: 초등학교 선생님들의 경우 평균 봉급은 1,800달러입니다.
