첫댓글 bend(구부리다)의 과거형과 분사형이 bent입니다. 흔히 팔이 안 쪽으로 굽는다는 표현을 씁니다. 어디 한쪽으로 굽는다는 것은 그 쪽으로 치우친다는 말과 같습니다. 한쪽에 치우침은 특정한 것에 치우친다는 것이고 그것은 음식이나 취미의 경우에는 "기호"란 말로, 성격에는 "성향"이란 말로, 사상이나 풍조에는 "경향"이란 말로 표현됩니다. 모두다 한쪽으로 굽는 쏠림현상입니다.
동의어인 [inclination ] 도 어근 clin 이 bend 뜻이므로, [proclivity ]도 마찬가지입니다. [penchant ]의 경우는 pend.penc가 hang 의 뜻이므로 한쪽에 끝끝내 매달려 떨어지기 싫어하는 것이니 곧 성향,기호 가 되는 겁니다.
