“Father, Forgive Them”

Luke 23:26-49

Key Verse: 23:34a, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

요절: 23:34a, “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서. 자기의 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다.”

Jesus was crucified and died.

예수님은 십자가에 못박히시고 죽으셨습니다.  

Luke records three phrases of Christ from the cross.

누가복음 저자는 십자가 상에서 예수님이 남기신 세 가지 말씀을 기록하고 있습니다.

From the cross, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

십자가에서 예수님은  “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서. 자기의 하는  것을 알지 못함이니이다.” 라고 기도하셨습니다.

Jesus’ prayer reveals the unconditional love of God for sinners.

예수님의 기도는 죄인들을 향하신 하나님의 조건없는 사랑을 잘 드러내고 있습니다.

Jesus’ forgiving love has the power to heal and transform any sinner who believes.

예수님의 용서의 사랑에는 어떤 죄인이든지 믿기만 하면 고침을 받고 변화되는 능력이 있습니다.

May we all receive Jesus’ forgiving love and live a new life.

우리 모두가 이 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접하고 새로운 인생을 살 수 있기를 기도합니다.

I. Jesus was crucified (26-33)

I. 십자가에 못박히신 예수님 (26-33)

In verses 1-25, Jesus was tried by the Jewish leaders and condemned for claiming to be the Son of God.

1-25절에서 예수님은 유대 지도자들에 의해 심문을 받으시고 하나님의 아들이라 칭하심으로 인해 정죄 당하셨습니다.

Jesus was then tried by the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate and sentenced to be crucified.

그후 로마 총독 본디오 빌라도에게 심문당하시고 십자가 형을 선고 받으셨습니다.

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

이에 병사들이 형을 집행하기 시작했습니다.

They beat him and spat on him.

그들은 예수님을 때리고 침뱉았습니다.

They placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head to mock his kingship.

그들은 예수님의 왕권을 조롱하기 위해서 예수님의 머리에 가시 면류관을 씌웠습니다.

Blood dripped down Jesus’ face and neck.

피가 예수님의 얼굴과 목을 따라 흘러내렸습니다.

They whipped Jesus until his body was streaked with blood.

그들은 예수님의 온 몸이 피로 범벅이될 때까지 채찍질 하였습니다.

Then they made Jesus carry his heavy cross through the streets to his place of execution.

그리고 나서 예수님께 무거운 십자가를 지우고 거리를 지나 형집행  장소로 가게 하였습니다.

Jesus fell under the heavy weight of his cross.

예수님은 십자가의 무게를 견디지 못하고 쓰러지셨습니다.

The soldiers seized a visitor to Jerusalem named Simon, who was from northern Africa, and they forced him to carry the cross behind Jesus.

병사들은 예루살렘을 방문 중이던 북아프리카 출신 시몬을 붙잡아 억지로 십자가를 지게 하여 예수님을 따르게 하였습니다.

Look at verse 27.

27절을 보십시오.

A large crowd followed Jesus.

큰 무리가 예수님을 따랐습니다.

Some mocked him.

어떤 이들을 예수님을 모욕했습니다.

Others wondered how this could happen.

다른 이들은 어떻게 이런 일이 생길 수 있는가 의아해했습니다.

Some women mourned and wailed for him, feeling sorry for his undeserved suffering.

몇몇 여인들은 예수님께서 억울하게 고통을 당하시는 것으로 인해 마음 아파하며 예수님을 위하여 슬피 울었습니다.  

Even in his great pain, Jesus turned and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.”

그런데 예수님은 극심한 고통 가운데서도 돌아보시며 말씀하셨습니다.  “예루살렘의 딸들아 나를 위하여 울지 말고 너희와 너희 자녀를 위하여 울라.”  

Rather than being comforted by these women, Jesus was mindful of those who would be under God’s judgment in the future.

예수님은 고통 가운데서도 여인들로부터 위로를 받기보다는 장차 임할 하나님의 심판 아래 처하게 될 그들에 대해  염려하셨습니다.

Jesus said, “For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

예수님은 “푸른 나무에도 이같이 하거든 마른 나무에는 어떻게 되리요?”고 하셨습니다.  

If innocent Jesus could suffer like this, guilty sinners would suffer much more under God’s judgment.

죄 없으신 예수님이 이렇게 고통을 받으신다면 죄인들은 하나님의 심판 아래서  얼마나 큰 고통을 받아야 하겠습니까?

Jesus wants us to weep for our sins in repentance and escape God’s coming judgment.

예수님은 우리가 우리들의 죄를 애통히 회개하여 하나님의 다가오는 심판을 피하기를 원하십니다.

Look at verses 32-33.

32, 33절을 보십시오.

“Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.  When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.”

“또 다른 두 행악자도 사형을 받게 되어 예수와 함께 끌려 가니라. 해골이라 하는 곳에 이르러 거기서 예수를 십자가에 못 박고 두 행악자도 그렇게 하니 하나는 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 있더라.”

Jesus was crucified between two convicted criminals to shame him more (Is 53:12).

예수님은 두 명의 사형수 사이에서 십자가형을 당하시므로 더 수치스럽게 되셨습니다. 

Crucifixion is the most barbaric, humiliating and torturous way to die. 십자가형은 가장 야만적이고 혐오스럽고 고통스러운 사형 방법입니다.

Jesus’ pain was more than we can imagine.

예수님의 고통은 우리의 머리로는 도저히 상상할 수 없는 것이었습니다. In the last month, I accidentally bruised and cut my fingers several times. 지난 달 저는 손가락에 멍이들고 상처를 입는 일들을 여러 번 겪게 되었습니다. Each time I yelled loudly and my wife came to see if I was all right. I just needed a small bandage.

매번 저는 고통으로 소리쳤고 제 아내는 제가 괜찮은가 걱정이 되어 달려왔습니다. 사실 저는 작은 반창고 하나 필요했을 뿐이었습니다.

That is not even 1% of Jesus’ suffering.

제가 겪은 것은 예수님의 고통에 1 퍼센트 조차도 안되는 것입니다.  

Six inch nails were driven through Jesus’ wrists and feet to attach him to the cross.

6인치의 긴 못이 예수님의 손목과 발등을 관통하여 십자가에 박히였습니다. The nails struck his nerves, punctured arteries, cut muscles, and shattered his bones.

굵은 못들이 신경을 관통하고 동맥을 손상시키고, 근육을 자르고 뼈마디를 산산히 부수었습니다.

Jesus was hanging on the cross to die slowly in great pain and shame. 예수님은 십자가에 달리셔서 감당하기 힘든 고통과 수치 가운데 천천히 죽으셨습니다.  

The prophecy of Psalm 22:14-16 described his suffering: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.”

시편 22장 14-16절, 예언의 말씀이 그 고통을 묘사하고 있습니다. “나는 물 같이 쏟아졌으며 내 모든 뼈는 어그러졌으며 내 마음은 밀랍 같아서 내 속에서 녹았으며 내 힘이 말라 질그릇 조각 같고 내 혀가 입천장에 붙었나이다 주께서 또 나를 죽음의 진토 속에 두셨나이다. 개들이 나를 에워쌌으며 악한 무리가 나를 둘러 내 수족을 찔렀나이다.” [video clip from “Passion of Christ” movie]

Why did Jesus have to suffer like this?

왜 예수님은 이런 고통을 당하셔야만 하셨습니까?

It was for our sins.

이는 우리의 죄악으로 인함이었습니다.

Sin is a serious matter to God.

죄는 하나님 앞에 심각한 문제입니다.

These days, many people think sin is only a psychological term to make people feel guilty.

오늘날 많은 사람들이 죄는 사람들로 하여금 죄책감을 느끼게 하기 위한 심리학적인 용어에 불과할 뿐이라고 생각합니다.

They do not know that sin is serious.

그들은 죄가 얼마나 심각한지 알지 못합니다.

But sin is so serious that the Son of God had to die on the cross.

하지만 죄는 너무나 심각한 문제이기 때문에 하나님의 아들이 십자가에서 돌아가셔야만 하였습니다.

Many people treat sin lightly.

많은 사람들이 죄를 가볍게 생각합니다.

For example, many young people think it is cool to go to a party, and indulge in alcohol, drugs or sex.

예를 들어 많은  젊은이들이 파티에 참석하는 것을 멋진 일이라고 생각하고 음주, 마약 또는 섹스에 탐닉합니다.

They think they can handle it with no problem, and stay on their schedule the next day as if nothing has happened.

그들은 이러한 생활을 스스로 통제할 수 있다고 생각하며 다음 날이면 아무 일도 없었던 듯이 일상으로 돌아갑니다.

They do not know that sin is a spiritual disease that not only separate us from God, but also lead us to death.

그들은 죄가 우리를 하나님께로부터 갈라 놓을 뿐 아니라 우리를 죽음에 이르게 하는 영적인 병이라는 사실을 알지 못합니다.

The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.” (Ro 6:23)

성경은 말합니다. “죄의 삯은 사망이요.” (롬 6:23)

Death is not the end.

죽음이 끝이 아닙니다.

After death, we must all face God’s judgment. (Heb 9:27; 2Co 5:10)

죽은 뒤에 우리 모두는 하나님의 심판대 위에 서야만 합니다. (히 9:27; 고후 5:10)

After judgment, guilty sinners must go to the fiery lake of burning sulfur to suffer eternally.

심판 후에 유죄선고를 받은 죄인들은 무섭게 타오르는 유황 지옥불에서 영원히 고통을 받아야 합니다.

This is what we all deserve for our sins.

이것이 우리가 죄로 인해 마땅히 받아야할 형벌입니다.

But God did not leave us to suffer in our sins.

그러나 하나님께서는 우리가 죄 가운데서 고통받게 내버려두지 않으셨습니다.

God had great mercy on us and sent Jesus to be punished on the cross in our places.

하나님께서는 우리를 긍휼히 여기사 예수님을 보내어 우리를 대신하여 십자가 형벌을 받게 하셨습니다.

John the Baptist understood this and called Jesus “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

세례 요한은 이를 깨닫고 예수님을 “세상 죄를 지고가는 하나님의 어린 양”이라고 불렀습니다.

Isaiah 53:5 prophesied, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

이사야 53:5절은 이렇게 예언했습니다. “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리는 나음을 받았도다.”

God sent Jesus to heal us from our sinsickness and to give us new life. 하나님께서는죄로 병든 우리를 치료하시고 우리에게 새 생명을 주시기 위해 예수님을 보내주셨습니다.  

This is the love of God.

이것이 바로 하나님의 사랑입니다.

Apostle John proclaimed, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

사도 요한은 선포했습니다. “하나님께서 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라.”  

Praise Jesus who was crucified on our behalf!

우리를 위해 십자가에 못박히신 예수님을 찬양합니다.

II. Jesus died to save us (34-49)

II. 우리를 구원하기 위해 죽으신 예수님 (34-49)

In times of suffering, people usually reveal their inherent self-centeredness. 고통의 때에사람들은 보통 자기 중심적인 본성을 드러냅니다.

In suffering, we often curse or complain.

고통 가운데서 우리는 남을 저주하고 불평합니다.

But Jesus is different.

그러나 예수님은 다르셨습니다.

On the cross, we see Jesus’ true character and identity.

십자가에서 우리는 진정으로 예수님이 어떤 분이신가를 발견할 수 있습니다. Luke records three things which Jesus spoke from the cross.

누가복음의 저자는 예수님께서 십자가 상에서 남기신 세 가지 말씀을 기록하고 있습니다.

Through Jesus’ words from the cross, we learn of Jesus’ heart and God’s love for us.

십자가 상의 예수님의 말씀들을 통해 우리는 우리를 향하신 예수님의 심정과  하나님의 사랑을 배울 수 있습니다.

First, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them.” (34a)

첫째, 예수님은 “아버지, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서.” 하셨습니다.

In verse 34a, Luke records Jesus’ first words from the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

34절 상반부에서 누가는 예수님의 십자가상 첫 번째 말씀을 기록합니다. “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서. 자기가 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다.”

It was a prayer to his Father.

이것은 하나님 아버지를 향한 기도였습니다.

In unbearable pain and sorrow, Jesus still called God, “Father.”

견딜기 힘든 고통과 슬픔 가운데서도 예수님은 변함없이 하나님을 “아버지.” 하고 부르셨습니다. 

Even on the cross, Jesus absolutely believed in his Father’s love. 십자가상에서 조차도 예수님은 하나님의 사랑에 대해서 절대적으로 확신하셨습니다.

God’s heart was grieving to allow and to watch his Son’s suffering on the cross.

자기 아들을 십자가에서  고통받게 하시고 이를 바라보시는 하나님의 마음은 슬픔으로 가득찼습니다.  

Even so, Jesus understood his Father’s love for all sinners.

그럼에도 불구하고 예수님께서는 모든 죄인들을 향한 아버지 하나님의 사랑을 이해하셨습니다.

Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them…” 

그리고 기도하셨습니다. “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서.”

It would be understandable if Jesus had cursed his killers to go to hell as a deserved punishment.

만약 예수님께서 당신을 죽이려는 자들에게 그들이 받아 마땅한 지옥으로 가도록 저주하셨다면  이해가 됩니다.

But Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them.”

하지만 예수님은 “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서.”라고 기도하셨습니다.

Here, God’s love for sinners is best revealed through Jesus’ prayer.

여기서 죄인들을 향한 하나님의 사랑이 예수님의 기도를 통해 너무나 분명하게 들어납니다.

Fallen man cannot pray for the forgiveness of one who has hurt him.

타락한 인간은 자신에게 상처를 준 사람을 의 용서해 달라고  기도하지 못합니다.

Not only can he not forgive, but hatred or indifference grows within him. 용서는 둘째치고 증오와 무관심이 더욱 자라나는 것이 우리 본성입니다. Unforgiveness is a most serious problem and the root cause of broken relationships, hatred, bitterness and revenge.

용서치 않음은 가장 심각한 문제이며 관계성 파괴, 원한, 쓴뿌리와 복수의 뿌리가 됩니다.

Human history contains so much revenge.

인간의 역사에는 수많은 복수가 이어져 왔습니다.

Revenge begets more revenge in a vicious cycle.

복수는 또 다른 복수를 낳아 악순환이 됩니다.

But Jesus put an end to this vicious cycle of revenge with his prayer from the cross: “Father, forgive them.”

그러나 예수님은 십자가에서 “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서.” 라고 기도하심으로  이 복수의 악순환의 고리를 끊으셨습니다.  

God did not hold any grudges against us for our sins.

하나님께서는 우리 죄에 대해서 어떤 원한도 간직하지 않으셨습니다.

Rather, God punished his Son Jesus as an atoning sacrifice and forgave all our sins.

오히려 하나님께서는 그의 아들 예수님을 대속물로 내어 놓으심으로 심판하시고 우리의 모든 죄를 용서하여 주셨습니다.

When we accept Jesus’ forgiving love, he erases all our sins and keeps no record of them.

우리가 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접할 때, 우리의 모든 죄와 그 기록들을 깨끗이 지워 주십니다.

Paul described this forgiving love saying, “It keeps no record of wrongs.” (1Co 13:5)

사도 바울은 이 용서의 사랑을 이렇게 묘사하였습니다. “사랑은 악한 것을 생각지 아니한다” (고전13:5)

We often remember someone’s wrongs against us and replay them over and over like a video recording.

우리는 우리에게 대한 다른 사람들의 잘못을 기억하고 녹화한 비디오와 같이  반복해서 재생하며 기억합니다.

A man can take his bitterness and anger with him to the grave.

심지어는 그 사람에 대한 쓴뿌리와 분노를 무덤까지 가지고 갑니다.

Even many Christians say, “I can do anything for Jesus, but I cannot forgive that person who hurt me.”

심지어 많은 기독교인들조차도 “나는 예수님을 위해 무엇이든 할 수 있지만 나에게 상처준 그 인간은 용서할 수 없다.” 라고 말합니다.

Actually, we have no power to forgive others.

사실 우리에게는 다른 사람을 용서할 수 있는 힘이 없습니다.

What wretched sinners we are!

우리가 얼마나 비참한 죄인들입니까?

But when we accept Jesus’ forgiving love that cleanses all our sins, we can forgive others.

하지만 우리가 우리의 모든 죄를 깨끗케 하신 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접할 때,  다른 사람들을  용서할 수 있게 됩니다. 

This is the gospel of forgiveness.

이것이 바로 용서의 복음입니다.

When St. Stephen was being stoned to death, he did not look at his enemies’ angry faces.

성 스테반이 돌에 맞아 순교하게 되었을 때, 그는 그를 해치는 원수들의 성난 얼굴을 보지 않았습니다.

He looked up to heaven and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 그는 눈을 들어 하늘을 보고 하나님 우편에 앉아계신 예수님을 바라보았습니다. When Stephen looked at Jesus and remembered Jesus’ love, he could pray. 그가 예수님을 바라보고 예수님의 사랑을 기억했을 때, 그는 기도할 힘을 얻었습니다.

“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” 

“주님, 이 죄를 저희에게 돌리지 마옵소서.”

In his prayer Jesus said, “…for they do not know what they are doing.”

이 기도에서 예수님은 “그들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다.” 하셨습니다.

The Jewish leaders did not know that they were condemning the Son of God.

유대 종교 지도자들은 그들이 하나님의 아들을 정죄하고 있는 줄 알지 못했습니다.

The Roman soldiers did not know that they were mocking the King of kings. 로마 군병들은 그들이 만왕의 왕을 조롱하고 있는 줄 알지 못했습니다. Because of sin, we do not know what we are doing.

죄로 인해 우리는 우리가 무엇을 하고 있는지 알지 못합니다.

Some people are like the religious leaders, who condemn others and justify themselves in self-righteousness.

어떤 사람들은 종교 지도자들과 같이 다른 사람들을 정죄하고 자기를 의롭다하며 자신을 합리화합니다. 

Some, like the Roman soldiers, ridicule others’ hardships in their cruelty. 어떤 이들은 로마 군병들같이 다른 사람들의 역경과 고난을  잔혹하게 비웃습니다.

Others, like the criminals next to Jesus, live in laziness and dishonesty. 다른 이들은 예수님 옆에 있던 범죄자들같이 게으르고 부정직하게 살아갑니다.  

Still others, like the disciples of Jesus, live in fear and weaknesses.

또 다른 이들은 예수님의 제자들과 같이 두려움과 연약함 가운데 살아갑니다.  

These days, so many families are broken when the husband and wife do not know what they are doing.

오늘날 남편과 아내가 그들이 무엇을 하는지 알지 못함으로 수 많은 가정들이 파탄이 나고 깨어집니다.

Too many young people indulge in pleasure-seeking and immorality to their own shame and guilt.

너무나 많은 젊은이들이 쾌락을 추구하고 부도덕한 생활에 탐닉함으로 수치와 죄책감에 시달리고 있습니다.  

Many say, “Leave me alone, I know what I am doing.”

많은 이들은 “날 좀 내버려둬, 내 인생 내가 잘 안다고.” 말합니다.

But to Jesus,  they do not know what they are doing.

그러나 예수님께서 보실 때 그들은 자기가 하고 있는 일이 무엇인지 알지 못합니다.  

Sin disfigures God’s image in us and causes us to lose our identity and purpose.

죄는 우리 안에 있는 하나님의 형상을 손상시키고 우리의 진정한 자아와 인생의 목적을 잃게 만듭니다. 

Jesus prays for a world of ignorant sinners: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

예수님께서는 세상의  무지한 죄인들을 위해 기도하십니다. “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서. 자기가 하는 것들을 알지 못합이니이다.”

Jesus’ heart is broken, like a father grieving for his rebellious son or wayward daughter.

예수님의 마음은 반항하는 아들이나 제 맘대로 사는 딸로 인해 애통해 하는 아버지와 같이 상하셨습니다.  

Jesus wants to relieve us from our suffering and eternal punishment. 예수님은 우리를 그 고통과 영원한 심판으로부터  구원하기를 원하십니다.

Jesus’ prayer, “Father, forgive them,” opened the gates of heaven for sinners to be forgiven.

“아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서.” 하신 예수님의 기도는  하늘 문을 열어 죄인들이 용서함을 받는  역사를 이루셨습니다.

Jesus’ forgiving love has power to heal us and restore us as God's beloved and obedient children.

예수님의 용서의 사랑은 우리를 치료하여 하나님의  사랑스럽고 순종적인 자녀로 회복케 하는 힘이 있습니다.

One young American man was wounded by his parents’ divorce and became full of anger, violence and depression.

한 미국 청년은 부모님의 이혼으로 인해 상처를 받고 분노, 난폭함과 우울증으로 고통받았습니다.

In his anger, he hit and hospitalized one friend.

그는 분노 가운데서 한 친구에게 폭력을 휘둘러서 병원 신세를 지게 하였습니다.

He climbed a building without a harness out of emptiness.

허무감 가운데 그는 아무런 안전장치도 없이 빌딩을 타고 올랐습니다.

In his deep depression, he was suicidal.

깊은 우울증으로 인해 그는 언제든지 자살할 수 있습니다.   

His mother begged him with tears not to commit suicide.

그의 어머니는 눈물로 자살만은 하지 말도록 간청했습니다.

In his despair, he cried out to God.

그는 절망 가운데서 하나님께 부르짖었습니다.

Then God sent him a Bible teacher.

그 때 하나님께서는 그에게 성경 선생을 보내어 주셨습니다.

John 15:16 spoke to him.

요한복음 15장 16절이 그의 심령에 임했습니다.

Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…”

예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 나를 택한 것이 아니요 내가 너희를 택하여 세웠나니 이는 너희로 가서 열매를 맺게 하고 또 너희 열매가 항상 있게 하여.”

He accepted Jesus’ forgiveness of his sins and calling to live a new life. 그는 예수님의 죄사함과 새로운 인생을 살도록 부르시는  부르심을 영접했습니다.

Through Jesus' forgiveness and calling, he could love and forgive his parents and restore his relationship with them.

예수님의 용서와 부르심을 통해 그는 부모님을 사랑하고 용서할 수 있게 되었고 그들과의 관계성도 회복할 수 있게 되었습니다.

Recently, he came to Chicago to receive shepherd training in the hope to be a good shepherd for other wounded and needy souls.

최근 그는 상처받고 도움이 필요한 다른 영혼들을 섬기는 선한 목자가 되고자 하는 소망 가운데 목자 훈련을 받고자 시카고 센터로 오게 되었습니다.

One young Ukrainian woman hated her father since he abused her mother. 한 젊은 우크라이나 여성은 어머니를 학대하는 아버지를 증오하였습니다.

She hoped he would die.

그녀는 아버지가 죽기를 바랬습니다.

To release her pain, she hurt others and hated herself.

그녀는 자신의 고통에서 벗어나기 위해 다른 사람들에게 상처를 주고 자신을 미워했습니다.

As a result, she skipped classes and exams, and ate and slept a lot.

그 결과 그녀는 수업과 시험도 빼먹고 먹고 자는 것을 반복하는 생활을 하게 되었습니다.

In her deepest despair, God invited her to Bible study.

그녀가 감당할 수 없이 깊은 절망감 가운데 있을 때 하나님께서는 그녀를 성경공부로 초청하여 주셨습니다.

Jesus entered her heart through John 8:11, “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

예수님은 요한복음 8장 11절을 통해서 그녀의 마음 가운데 찾아와 주셔서 “나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니.” 선포하여 주시고, “가서 다시는 죄를 범치 말라.” 말씀하여 주셨습니다.

These were the best words she had ever heard.

이 말씀은 어디서도 듣지 못했던 가장 위대한 말씀이었습니다.  

She found forgiveness of her sins and was freed from her guilty conscience.

그녀는 죄사함을 받았고  죄의식에서 자유함을 얻었습니다.

She could even forgive her father.

그녀는 아버지를 용서할 수 있게 되었습니다.

Jesus’ forgiving love healed her heart and quenched her thirst.

예수님의 용서의 사랑이 그녀의 마음을 치료하고 목마름을 해결하여 주었습니다.

Jesus’ forgiving love changed a self-righteous sinner like me.

예수님의 용서의 사랑은 저와 같이 자기를 의롭다 생각하는 죄인도 변화시키셨습니다.

I thought I was better than others since I didn’t drink, smoke, take drugs and womanize.

저는 술을 마시거나  담배나 마약을 피우지 않았고 오입질도 하지 않았기 때문에 다른 사람보다는 낫다고 생각했습니다.

But I was a hypocrite, living in secret slavery to lust, pride and self-righteousness.

그러나 저는 은밀한 가운데 정욕, 교만 그리고 자기의에 종된 위선자의 삶을 살았습니다.

In college, I was invited to Bible study by an oriental man who spoke Japanese-English.

대학시절 저는 일본식 영어를 쓰는 한 동양인에 의해 성경공부에 초청되었습니다.

Each Bible study gave me joy and meaning.

성경공부는 매 시간마다 제게 기쁨과 의미를 가져다 주었습니다.

Through Genesis 12:1-3, especially the words “I will bless you” and “you will be a blessing,” God called me out of a self-centered life to a life blessed by God and a blessing to others.

창세기 12장 1-3절을 통해서 특별히 “내가 너를 축복하겠고.” 와 “너는  복의 근원이 될찌라.”는 말씀을 통해서 하나님께서는 자기 중심적인 삶에서 벗어나 하나님의 축복을 받고 다른 사람에게 복의 근원이 되는 인생을 살도록  불러주셨습니다.

Through Bible study, I soon found that I was a sinner who did not know what I was doing.

성경공부를 통해서 저는 제가 무지 가운데 행하는 죄인이었음을 발견하게 되었습니다.

In Jesus, I found salvation, hope and new life.

예수님 안에서 구원, 소망과 새 인생을 발견하게 되었습니다.

Since then, God blessed me in so many ways.

그 때부터 하나님께서는 저의 인생을 여러모로 축복하여 주셨습니다.

God blessed me with a beautiful wife, Dr.Maria, who might be more obedient than even oriental women.

하나님께서는 심지어는 동양 여인들보다 더 순종적인 Dr.마리아와 아름다운 가정을 이루도록 축복하셨습니다.

Though many people get mad at me for my stubborn pride, she is so humble, and only got mad at me a few times in our marriage, and for just a few minutes.

많은 사람들이 저의 고집스러운 자존심 때문에 화를 내지만 제 아내는 너무나 겸손하여서 결혼생활을 통틀어 단지 몇 번만 나에게 화를 내었고 그것도 몇 분 밖에 지속되지 않았습니다.

God blessed us with 5 children.

하나님께서는 5 자녀로 축복해 주셨습니다.

When our twins were born, including our only daughter, with great joy I emailed everyone in my address book, all over the world.

유일한 딸 아이를 포함해서 쌍둥이 남매가 태어났을 때 저는 너무나 기뻐서 제 주소록에 있는 모든 이들에게 전세계로 메일을 보냈습니다.

For the last 15 years, I have been so privileged to study the Bible and pray with Northwestern students full time.

지난 15년 동안 저는 풀타임 목자로 노스웨스턴 학생들과 성경을 공부하며 기도하는 놀라운 특권도 누리게 되었습니다.

I thank and praise Jesus for his forgiving love and hope for a self-righteous sinner like me!

이 자기 의 가운데 살던 저와 같은 죄인을 향하신 예수님의 용서의 사랑과 소망에 감사와 찬양을 드립니다.

Second, “today you will be with me in paradise” (34b-43).

둘째, 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있으리라” (34b-43).

The soldiers divided up Jesus’ clothes by casting lots, which fulfilled Psalm 22:18, “They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”

병사들은 제비를 뽑아 예수님의 옷을 찟어 나누었습니다. 이는 시편기자로 하신 말씀을 이루신 것입니다. “내 겉옷을 나누며 속옷을 제비 뽑나이다.”

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.” 백성들은 서서 구경하고 있었고 관리들은 비웃으며 말했습니다. “저가 남을 구원하였으니 만일 하나님이 택하신 자 그리스도이면 자신도 구원할지어다.” The soldiers also came up and mocked him.

병사들도 나와와서 예수님을 조롱하기 시작했습니다.

They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

그들은 신포도주를 내밀며 “네가 만일 유대인의 왕이면 네가 너를 구원하라.”고 조롱하였습니다.

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

함께 예수님과 십자가에 매달린 행악자 중 한 명은 예수님을 모욕했습니다. “네가 그리스도가 아니냐 너와 우리를 구원하라.”

They all challenged Jesus to save himself.

그들은 모두 예수님이 자신을 구원해보라고 도전했습니다.

Jesus had the power to save himself.

예수님은 자신을 구원할 힘을 가지고 계셨습니다.

But he did not use it.

그러나 예수님은 그 힘을 사용하지  않으셨습니다.

The motto of the world is “save yourself.”

세상의 모토는 “자신을 구원하라.” 입니다.

People are quite skilled at saving themselves.

사람들은 자신을 구원하는데 상당히 뛰어납니다.

But Jesus did not save himself in order to save all people from their sins. 그러나 예수님은 모든 사람들을 죄로부터 구원하기 위해 자신을 구원하지 않으셨습니다.

What a wonderful Savior we have in Jesus Christ!

이 예수님은 얼마나 놀라운 구원자이십니까?

Praise Jesus our Savior! 우리의 구원자 예수님을 찬양합니다.

One criminal next to Jesus insulted Jesus.

예수님 옆에  달린 행악자 중 한 사람은 예수님을 모욕했습니다.

But the other criminal defended Jesus.

그러나 다른 한 명은 예수님을 변호했습니다.  

He rebuked his fellow criminal saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence?

그는 동료 행악자를 꾸짖었습니다. “네가 동일한 정죄를 받고서도 하나님을 두려워하지 아니하느냐?”

“We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

“우리는 우리가 행한 일에 상당한 보응을 받는 것이니 이에 당연하거니와 이 사람이 행한 것은 옳지 않은 것이 없느니라.”

This man had a proper view of himself and of Jesus.

이 사람은 자신과 예수님에 대한 바른 견해를 가지고 있었습니다.  

He knew he was a sinner getting what he deserved.

그는 자신이 형벌을 받아 마땅한 죄인임을 알았습니다.

He did not blame his wife or his parents or his education or his alarm clock for his sins.

그는 자기 아내나 부모 또는 그의 교육이나 알람 시계를 그의 죄에 대한 핑계로 삼지 않았습니다.

He also knew that Jesus was innocent.

그는 또한 예수님이 무죄하심을 알았습니다.

More than that, he also believed Jesus was the King of heaven.

무엇보다도 그는 예수님께서 하늘나라의 왕이심을 믿었습니다.

How was he changed so radically?

그가 어떻게 이렇게 갑작스럽게 변할 수 있었을까요?

Perhaps he heard Jesus’ prayer, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

아마도 그는 “아버지여, 저희를  사하여 주옵소서, 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다.” 하시는 예수님의 기도를 들었을 것입니다.  

One thing is clear: his eyes were opened to see God and his kingdom, so he made a bold appeal: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

한 가지는 분명합니다. 그의 영적인 눈이 뜨여 하나님과 하늘 나라를 보게 되었고 이를 기초로 그는 담대하게 간청을 드렸다는 것입니다. “예수여 당신의 나라에 임하실 때에 나를 기억하소서.”

Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

예수님은 대답하셨습니다. “내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있으리라.”  

What a tremendous promise from Jesus!

이 얼마나 놀라운 약속의 말씀입니까?

At that moment of his repentance and trust in Jesus, he was saved.

그가 회개하고 예수님을 믿은 바로 그 순간 그는 구원을 받았습니다.

Here we learn that Jesus saves any sinner who admits his sins, turns from them and trusts in Jesus to save him.

여기서 우리는 예수님은 자신의 죄를 고백하고 죄에서 돌이키며자신을 구원하기 위해 오신 예수님을  믿는 자는 어떤 죄인이라도 구원하신다는 것을 배웁니다.  

We do not deserve his forgiveness and mercy.

우리는 그분의 용서하심과 자비하심을 받을 자격이 없습니다.

But he offers it to us freely.

그럼에도 불구하고 예수님께서는 이를 우리에게 값없이 주셨습니다.

There is a wonderful life of forgiveness and fellowship with Jesus awaiting those who confess their sins and receive his salvation.

자신의 죄를 고백하고 구원을 영접하는 자들에게는 용서함과 예수님과 함께  교제를 나눌 수 있는 놀라운 삶이 기다리고 있습니다.

One cynical criminal next to Jesus rejected Jesus and had to face God’s righteous judgment all alone.

예수님 옆에 있던 냉소적인 행악자는 예수님을 배척함으로  홀로 하나님의 의로운 심판대 앞에 서게 되었습니다.

The other repentant criminal accepted Jesus’ forgiving love and was saved.

반면에  회개한 다른 행악자는 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접하고 구원을 받게 되었습니다.

Thank you Jesus for saving any sinner who asks for your mercy!

자비를 구하 자는 어떤 죄인일지라도 구원하시는 예수님께 감사를 드립니다.

Third, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (44-49).

셋째, 아버지 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 부탁하나이다 (44-49).

For six hours, Jesus hung on the cross, bearing our sins and shame.

6 시간동안 예수님은 십자가에 매달려서우리의 죄와 수치를 감당하셨습니다.

Darkness came over the whole land for the last three hours of Jesus’ life, even though it was midday.

때가 대낮이었음에도 불구하고 예수님의 생애 마지막 3시간 동안 어둠이 온 땅이 깔리게 되었습니다.

Another strange thing happened.

또 다른 특이한 일이 벌어졌습니다.

Luke says that “the curtain of the temple was torn in two.”

누가는 “성소의 휘장이 한가운데가 찢어지더라.” 고 말합니다.  

This temple curtain separated sinners from God.

성소의 휘장은 하나님과 죄인들을 분리시켰습니다.  

Through Jesus’ blood, a new and living way was opened up to God (Heb 10:19-20).

예수님의 피로 인해 하나님께로 가는 새롭고 산 길이 열리게 되어습니다.

Through faith in Jesus’ blood, sinners can go to God directly and enjoy fellowship with him any time, any place.

예수님의 보혈을 믿을 때 죄인들은 하나님께 직접 나아가서 언제 어디든지 하나님과 교제를 나눌 수 있습니다.

Luke records Jesus’ last words.

누가는 예수님의 마지막 말씀을 기록하고 입습니다.

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

예수님은 큰 소리로 부르셨습니다. “아버지 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 부탁하나이다.”

When he had said this, he breathed his last. With his last breath, Jesus entrusted his life and spirit fully to God.

이 말씀을 하시고 마지막 숨을 거두셨습니다. 마지막 숨을 거두는 순간에 예수님은 하나님께 자신의 삶과 영혼을 온전히 의탁하셨습니다.

Usually people die sadly in defeat and regret.

대부분 사람들은 패배감과 후회 가운데 죽음을 맞이합니다.

But Jesus died victoriously since he finished his divine mission to save the world from sin.

그러나 예수님께서는 세상을 죄로부터  구원하시는 거룩한 사명을 이루셨기 때문에 승리의 죽음을 맞이하실 수 있었습니다.

Jesus’ death changed one more unlikely person at the scene: the Roman centurion.

예수님의 죽음은 또 한명의 의외의 인물을 변화시켰습니다. 그는 로마 백부장이었습니다.

He was a soldier who had seen many men beaten and crucified.

그는 수 많은 사람들이 매 맞고 십자가형을 당하는 것을 본 군인이었습니다. But he had never seen a man face death with such grace and peace, like Jesus did.

하지만 그는 예수님처럼 은혜와 평강 가운데 죽음을 맞이하는 사람을 지금껏 본적이 없었습니다.

When he saw how Jesus suffered and died, he praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”

그가 예수님이 어떻게 고통받으시고 죽으시는가 하는 것을 보았을 때 그는 하나님을 찬양하며 말했습니다. “이 사람은 정녕 의인이었도다.”

The crucifixion and death of Jesus displays the forgiving love of God for each of us.

예수님의 십자가와 죽음은 우리 개개인을 향하신 하나님의 용서의 사랑을 잘 드러냅니다.

Jesus died to forgive all our sins and take us to be with him in his kingdom. 예수님은 우리의 모든 죄를 사하시고 우리를 하나님 나라로 인도하시기 위해 돌아가셨습니다.

Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

예수님은 “아버지여, 저희를 사하여 주옵소서 자기의 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다.”라고 기도하셨습니다.  

Jesus’ forgiving love has the power to change any sinner who repents and believes.

예수님의 용서의 사랑은 어떤 죄인이든지 회개하고 믿기만 하면 변화시키는 능력이 있습니다.

When we receive his forgiving love, we can live in love, joy and peace. 우리가 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접할 때 사랑, 기쁨 그리고 평강 가운데 살 수 있게 됩니다.

When we accept his forgiving love, we can forgive others as well.

우리가 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접할 때 다른 사람들도 용서할 수 있게 됩니다.

May we each personally receive Jesus’ forgiving love.

우리 각 사람이 인격적으로 예수님의 용서의 사랑을 영접하기를 기도합니다.
