권력의 중심인 페르시아 왕궁에서 왕후를 뽑습니다. 왕후라는 권력의 자리를 차지하기 위한 정치와 경쟁이 파도 칩니다. 왕의 아내로서 갖추어야 할 법도의 핵심은 무엇인가? 권력이 아닌, 상심한 왕의 마음을 살피고 헤아리는 온기 어린 마음을 가진 한 사람을 찾을 수 있습니다. 성도라면 하나님께서 나를 통해 당신의 뜻을 이루기를 고대 하며 충실한 일상을 살아내야 합니다. 포로 신분으로 자기 삶을 챙기기도 버거웠을 텐데 모르드개는 조카 에스더를 키웠습니다.

팍팍한 생활 중에도 인애를 잃지 않으면서 이웃에게 선을 행한 것입니다. 모르드개는 에스더에게 출신 민족과 종족에 대하여 말하지 말라 고 조언한 뒤, 날마다 궁 처소를 왕래하며 에스더의 안부를 챙기고 일의 성사를 도모하였습니다. "그 후에(1)" 는 1장의 사건이 일어난 후라는 뜻입니다. 우리는 1장에서 2장까지 금방 넘어왔지만, 역사적인 시간으로는 약 4년이라는 시간이 지난 상태입니다. 4년 이라는 시간이 지나자, 어느덧 나라의 잔치 자리에서 자신의 체면을 구기고, 많은 귀족과 관리들 앞에서 창피를 준 왕비를 폐위 시킨 것이 마음에 걸리게 되었습니다.

아마 아하수에로 왕은 당연히 자신이 이길 것이라고 생각하고 전쟁에 임했을 것입니다. 그러나 자신의 생각과는 달리 그리스 군대가 전략적인 싸움을 잘해서 페르시아 군이 고전을 면치 못합니다. 그리고 마지막에 결정적인 패배를 맞이하고 아하수에로 왕은, 도망치듯 페르시아로 돌아올 수밖에 없었습니다. 이때 자신을 위로해줄 누군가 가 필요했을 것입니다. 그리고 폐위 한 와스디 왕비가 생각난 것입니다. 남자가 바깥 일을 실패해도, 세상에 자기를 이해할 수 있는 한 사람이 집안에 있다면 남자는 결코 좌절하지 않는다고 합니다.

그래서 은근히 다시 왕비를 용서하고 복귀시키고 싶은 마음이 들었을 수 있습니다. 이 때 왕의 신하들이 왕의 마음을 알아차리고 왕은 왕을 위하여 아리따운 처녀들을 구하게 하시라고 청원을 합니다(2). 이것은 아마 예전 왕비가 복위되면 옛날에 자신을 폐위 시킨 신하들에게 복수할 것임을 알았기 때문일 것입니다. 그래서 신하들이 먼저 새로운 왕비를 구하자고 말하는 것입니다. 조선의 역사를 보면 이런 일을 종종 볼 수 있습니다.

만약 왕이 "나는 새로운 왕비가 필요 없다."하거나 혹은 "예전 왕비를 다시 세울 것이다"’라고 말했다면 에스더는 왕비가 될 수 없었을 것이고, 나중에 이스라엘 민족은 위기 가운데 구원 받지 못했을 것입니다. 그런데 신하의 간청에 왕 역시도 긍정적으로 수긍 합니다. 왕의 고독과 더불어 하나님이 왕의 마음을 움직이신 것으로 보입니다. 이처럼 에스더서 에서는 하나님이란 이름이 단 한 번도 나오지 않지만 하나님이 에스더와 모르드개의 배후에서 일하고 계신다는 사실을 암시하고 있습니다.

Esther would not have been able to become a queen if the king had said, "I don't need a new queen," or "I'll rebuild the old queen." Later, the Israelites would not have been able to be saved in the midst of the crisis. The king's request, however, is also positively convinced. It appears that God has moved the king's heart along with the king's solitude. As a result, the name God never appears in Esther, but it implies that he is working behind Esther and Mordecai.

에스더는 궁중에서 요구한 왕후의 요건인 아름다운 외모를 가졌고, 언약의 하나님이 베푸는 것과 같은 언약 적 은혜를 허개와 왕에게 입으며(9,17)왕에게 간택됩니다. 에스더가 왕궁으로 이끌려 갔다(8)라고 나와 있습니다. 그러니깐 에스더가 스스로 자원해서 왕비 후보생으로 간 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 많은 성경학자들은 강제 캐스팅이라고 보고 있습니다. 일반적으로 왕비를 뽑으려고 할 때, 왕비만 뽑는 것이 아니라, 왕의 후궁과 첩들도 함께 뽑습니다.

그러나 하나님은 이러한 불운한 일을 당한 에스더를 오히려 좋은 기회가 될 수 있도록 섭리하십니다. 에스더가, 궁녀를 주관하는 헤개의 수하에 속하게 되었습니다(8). 헤게는 왕비를 뽑는 일을 주관하는 왕궁의 내시입니다.“헤개가 이 처녀를 좋게 보고 은혜를 베풀어 몸을 정결하게 할 물품과 일용품을 곧 주며 또 왕궁에서 으례 주는 일곱 궁녀를 주고 에스더와 그 궁녀들을 후궁 아름다운

처소로 옮기더라(9).” 이제 에스더는 최소한 궁녀나 첩이 아니라 후궁이 될 수 있습니다.

And if she did well, she was in the favor of the king and got the opportunity to go to the queen's seat. Esther was neither a noble nor a child of a powerful parent. She was the child of a prisoner, who, like King Seongjong's rain and Prince Yeonsan's mother, Songi (Yoon), had no connections at all. There was nothing she could rely on in these palaces. I think that this was of greater benefit to Esther. There was nothing to rely on in a human way, so who would Esther have relied on? Isn't it God?

에스더가 하나님을 의지할 때, 하나님은 그에게 가장 필요한 사람을 붙여주시는데, 그가 바로 왕궁 내시 헤게였습니다. 왕의 마음을 움직이셨던 하나님이, 궁전 내시 헤게의 마음을 움직이게 하셨던 것입니다. 비록 자신의 의도와 상관없이 억지로 끌려온 왕궁이지만, 어찌 보면 참으로 불행한 일을 겪은 것이지만, 하나님께서는 이를 통해 그분의 선을 이루시고 있던 것입니다. 그리고 가장 선한 방법으로 에스더를 보이지 않게 돕고 계셨습니다.

눈에 보이는 시간 이면에 하나님의 시간이 있고 하나님의 통치가 임하고 있는 것입니다. 에스더는 왕궁이 요구하는 모든 기준을 잘 따르되, 삼촌이 일러 준대로 자기 민족과 종족에 대하여는 침묵하였습니다. 또 도에 넘치는 사치를 일삼는 왕궁의 왕비답지 않게 허개가 정한 것 외에는 아무것도 구하지 않으므로 겸양과 절제의 본이 되었습니다. ‘사로잡음(6)‘속에서 살아야 했으나 침묵과 겸손과 절제라는 독특한 지혜로 타협하지 않으면서도 사람들에게 사랑받는 하나님의 자녀로 산 것입니다. 나는 눈에 보이는 시간 이면에 또 다른 시간이 있고 그의 통치가 임한다는 것을 아는가? 하나님의 뜻에 맞는 선택을 하려면 무엇이 필요한가?

역사의 주인이신 주님, 오늘 에스더가 왕궁으로 갔고 새 왕비로 간택된 것을 보았나이다. 예쁜 것이 죄는 아니지만 아직까지 하나님의 흔적은 어디에도 없고 에스더가 한 일 역시 하나도 없나이다. 그저 예뻐서 모드르게 삼촌을 통해 궁궐 나인이 되었을 뿐입니다. 주여. 숨어 계시는 하나님을 볼 수 있는 영안을 갖게 하시며, 숨은 하나님의 조언자 모르드개가 같은 사람이 되게 하옵소서.

특별히 우리 에스더가 자신이 하나님의 사람이라는 것을 잊지 않게 하시고 차근차근 준비해 나가는 숨은 하나님의 백성이 되게 도와주옵소서.
