14. Language of Steps and Processes!
September 2018! I came back to Korea to participate in the training program of the Overseas Koreans Foundation. It has been 9 years since I participated in the Korean Language Training Program for Teachers in 2009. The reason I participated in the training program after such a long time is that the government’s budget overlaps twice and three times, so those who received training cannot apply again within 5 years to prevent them from receiving benefits. Also, after that, I was busy with my personal ministry and various other things, so I did not have time to participate. Then, a few years ago, the training program for teachers and principals was conducted separately, so as a principal, I received training in a more upgraded program and operated the Korean school in a new way, so I applied for the training program of the Korean School Principals Group and participated in it in order to provide Korean language education suitable for modern times to Korean school students. In addition, since this training session is a training session for principals only, we can exchange information and ideas about operation through individual conversations, so it was a great training session that was very helpful to each other.
After the opening ceremony of the training session, the president of the Overseas Korean Foundation gave a welcoming speech and keynote speech, followed by a special lecture by the president of the Korean Language Society. It was a lively training session based on his many educational experiences, with deep knowledge of Korean and Korean language, how to teach and guide well, and what direction to take when operating a Korean language school that focuses on Korean and Korean language. And after the heated lecture,
“There are many cases where it is better to solve problems through questions and answers than through one-sided lectures,
so we finished 20 minutes early today to give more time for questions,
so please feel free to ask questions about the lecture content or
any other questions you may have about Korean and Korean language.
A question time was given. I thought it was time, so I raised my hand as soon as the chairman finished speaking. Then, when I was asked to ask a question, I stood up and
“I introduced myself as the principal of a small Korean school
in the city of ‘Cokki’ in ‘Molisha’
where about 20 to 30 students come and go.
There was laughter here and there. However, the chairman of the Korean Language Society motioned for me to ask questions as if it was okay. So I continued.
“I would like to ask the professor, who is the chairman of the Korean Language Society, a somewhat different question about the Korean Language Society
not about the content of today’s lecture, even if it is a little long. I would appreciate it if you could listen to it all.
As you know, the Korean Language Society
has studied the compositional system of the Korean language, established a correct system, and
has taught and guided it correctly through many members. I appreciate your role and hard work.
But on the other hand, if you think about things beyond that,
In terms of direction and application,
I think the name 'Hangul Society' is wrong.
Therefore, if you want to change the name of the society to 'Korean Language Society',
Or continue as 'Hangul Society',
I think the system of Hangul has already been established and completed to the point where there is no need to do anything more,
But now all that remains is to
Promote and inform it,
And that has also progressed to some extent,
Now that the contents are naturally being disseminated and educated by experts,
I think the Hangul Society is now like an old tree that has already fulfilled its function,
Living but dead,
Dead but alive.
So what should the Hangul Society do now?
As far as I know, Hangul is a character.
What is a character?
I think that any language,
Once it is decided through a political and academic discussion process,
It is used as a tool to express that language. For example, if Arabic numerals are a literal function,
Just as Arabic numerals are already used in Korean,
And Korean is read as one, two, three,
I think the Korean Language Society should now
Perform the function of allowing Korean to embrace any other language.
Of course, the Korean Language Society needs to conduct research on the Korean language,
But I think the Korean Language Society should work on creating standards or notation methods for each language
So that Korean can truly spread,
How can we express other languages in Korean according to the characteristics of each language?
And if we help each country and people apply it,
There will be a lot of work to do.
If as a result, countries and peoples who express their own languages in Hangul are born, Korea will have a huge economic effect, and not only will our country prosper, but it will also lead technological developments and become an even more advanced country, and in that case, countries that have adopted Hangul will easily become familiar with Korea, and not only will they be able to learn Korean easily, but Koreans will also be able to learn the languages of these countries easily, and they will also develop through the influence of Hangul and Korean language, and Korean culture, and various cutting-edge industries and technologies.
To do that, we need to naturally eliminate various problems, and I think the best way to do that is to naturally create a culture where young people express their own languages in Hangul through dramas and K-pop through the Korean Wave, and before officially expressing their own languages in Hangul, and create an atmosphere.
And based on that, if we create a system that supports the country in various ways, through promotion and education, I think Hangul can become a script that expresses the languages of countries that do not have scripts.
Therefore, I think the Hangul Society should now enter a new creative stage,
and actually spread and promote Hangul,
and fulfill its role.
And that will become the foundation,
but naturally, the government and various organizations will step forward,
invest, and participate,
and I think it will have real influence.
Please tell me what you think about this,
and if you agree with my thoughts,
please tell me how you can and will implement those things.
Thank you for listening to me for such a long time.”
After a long period of questions, the chairman said this.
“I think the principal’s question today is not a question,
but a suggestion for the direction that the Korean Language Society should take,
and a kind of pressure on me, the president, to do this.”
At that, everyone who participated in the training laughed.
“But when I think about it,
the principal’s words
pointed out things that our experts had not even thought of,
and had not even dared to think of,
and presented groundbreaking ideas.
However, I will recognize that it is difficult for me to speak here alone
and that there is a need to have sufficient discussion and direction on the suggestions,
and to accept them with an active attitude.
And I promise that I will personally make an effort
to discuss and research together academically
and to make it a stepping stone to a new world,
as you suggested.
I think that is worth it.
Thank you for the really profound suggestions today.
Only then did all the participants applaud and shout, “Wow!” Perhaps it was a sign of relief that the Q&A session had been so long and tiring, but it was over?
