The Serving Lord, Betrayal & Denial
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1 It was just before the Passover Festival (Holy Thursday). Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. (It was the last moments of Jesus to leave this world.) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (Jesus loved them, who faithfully follow Him, dearly.)
2 The evening meal (The Last Supper(1,The Pictures of)) was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. (Judas Iscariot was tempted by the devil, but actually by himself, to betray Jesus. He, and all others, can't blame Satan for his sin. Mt. 27:5)
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; (Jesus knew that He almost completed His mission in this world.) 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (In the last time of His public ministry, Jesus washed His disciples' feet.)
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” (Peter was confused by the action of the Lord.)
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” (Peter didn't know the intention of Jesus washing their feet. But he will come to the understanding in a while. Vs. 11-17)
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” (Peter still refused.) Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (Jesus insisted Himself by putting forward their relationship.)
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” (Peter couldn't refuse anymore because the Lordship of Jesus is the everything for Peter. And even asked for full bath.)
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, (The full bath means turning to Jesus, salvation and commission, which had been done, so no need of the full bath.) though not every one of you.” (who will betray Jesus.)
11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. (Judas Iscariot was not one of those commissioned.)
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. (They didn't understand a while ago (Vs.7). But now it's time to tell them the true meaning of washing their feet.)
13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. ("As I, the Lord, served you, you serve others." The Serving Lord; Servanthood of the leaders.)
16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. (The example of Jesus is absolute as much as the authority of the Lord.)
17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (When you came to know, do it. Then you will be blessed. Dead faith without action. What kind of blessing that might be for those doers? What blessing do you expect?)
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’ (Ps. 41:9, Foretelling betrayal from the inner circle.)
19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. (Jesus proves His power of foresight. He also proves that It is not Judas but Himself who determines His fate.)
20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” (God sent Jesus as of His agent. and Jesus are sending the disciples as of His agents. Accepting the disciples of Jesus is accepting Jesus, and consequently God who had sent Jesus.)
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” (In spite of His omniscience, the betrayal of His close one still hurts Jesus a lot.)
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. (The disciples were wondered who that betrayal is. Me? Is the is, Not the not.(2))
23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved (John? 21:20), was reclining next to him.
24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” (The disciple asked Jesus who he is on the motion of Peter.)
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. (Jesus gave the answer giving the piece of bread to the betrayer.)
27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. (Judas is irreversible. He may begin by doubting Jesus' true identity, but doubt has grown into a reality of betrayal. Jam. 1:15) So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” (Go ahead. Sell me out. Jesus permitted him to sell.)
28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. (Still the talks were hidden to the most of them.)
29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. (They misunderstood Jesus might send out Judas for some errand.)
30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. (Judas confirmed his plan. The plan is not a plan anymore but an action.) And it was (the Thursday) night.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man (who will suffer physically as the Son of Man) is glorified and God is glorified in him. (But God and He will be glorified with the salvation of the believers.)
32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. (The God's glory is the glory of the Son. 1:14. Jesus shares His glory with the followers. 17:22)
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. (Now it's time for Jesus to go down a path that no one has passed.)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (Jesus gave them the new command to love one another. John elaborates this teaching in his later letter; The first letter of John. 1Jn. 4:7-8)
35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (Love is the proof of the followers of Jesus; The Essence of Christian.)
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” (Nobody can go the way of Jesus but many will follow after Him later.)
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” (Peter thought that he could sacrifice his life following Him after.)
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! (But Jesus said that Peter will deny Jesus three times before the dawn. Jesus knew the loyalty of Peter but also knew he is not perfect as everyone else. Jesus is giving Peter a room to be forgiven and reinstated later despite of his shortcomings by telling him advance. Jesus loves them but not rely on them. 2:24-25)
(2,Is the is, Not the Not.)
I am not so sure the correctness of this sentence because I never heard/read this, but I just made it up.
In the context of Jesus' revelation about his traitor, his disciples confused in the midst of it. Some of them might look at themselves as, "What if I were him?"
I imagine so because in many times, in the similar situation, I doubt myself if I am the one with error or not.
But the doubt is doubt, and the truth is the truth in spite of my doubt.
(So, I'd better make my routine right.)
I searched this sentence with Korean Google AI and have this. (Translated to English.)
The expression "Is the is. Not the not." is a philosophical or linguistic sentence rather than a idiomatic English expression, meaning to clearly distinguish the essence of the core "Is" and "Negative/None."
Is the is: what is is what it is.
Not the not: Don't pretend you don't have one.

In other words, it means not to confuse substance (fact) and absence (false).
Note:
This sentence is similar to the context in which existence and non-existence are contrasted, such as Hamlet's 'To be, or not to be' (to die or to live).
The English word 'be verb (is)' is based on basic grammar, which represents a state or existence, and 'not' is not.
