美-캄보디아, 합동군사훈련 실시

(하노이=연합뉴스) 김권용 특파원 = 미국과 캄보디아가 13일 캄포트 등 일부 지역에서 연례 합동군사훈련에 들어갔다고 현지 언론들이 전했다.

`앙코르 센티널'로 명명된 이번 훈련에는 미 태평양군사령부 휘하병력 약 100명이 참가해 캄보디아 병력과 공동으로 대대급 훈련과 급조폭발물(IED) 대응 야전훈련, 평화유지활동, 다양한 인도주의 활동 등을 점검하게 된다.

오는 22일까지 계속되는 양국 합동훈련에서는 또 야전 의료지원과 농촌 등 낙후지역 주민들을 위한 의료활동 등도 펼쳐질 예정이다.

이번 훈련은 특히 중국이 최근 캄보디아의 도로 건설 등 인프라 구축사업을 적극 지원할 방침임을 밝히는 등 `캄보디아 끌어안기'를 한층 강화하는 가운데 이뤄지는 것이어서 주목된다.

이에 대해 캄보디아 주재 미 대사관 측은 군사유대관계를 강화하고 역내 평화와 안보협력을 증진하기 위한 역동적이고도 다각적인 훈련이라고 설명했다.

앞서 판 광쉐 캄보디아 주재 중국대사는 12일 자국이 지원한 캄보디아 바탐방 지역의 한 도로개통식에 참석한 자리에서 "캄보디아의 인프라 구축사업을 지속적으로 돕고 현지 주민들의 생활수준도 끌어올릴 것"이라며 캄보디아에 대한 지원 의지를 밝힌 바 있다.

RCAF, US troops on alert for Sentinel

Cambodian and United States soldiers are set to kick-off the third annual Angkor Sentinel today, a bilateral military exchange.

The 10-day exercise, which will take place in Kampong Speu and Kampot provinces, is designed to boost the defence relationship between the two countries; 100 soldiers from the US will participate along with 420 members of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.

“We hope to promote stronger experiences for our members of RCAF for humanitarian missions,” Ministry of Defense spokesman Chhum Socheat told the Post yesterday.

According to a press release issued by the US embassy in Phnom Penh yesterday, the joint exercise is part of a “substantial multi-year effort” by the US armed forces “to actively engage with Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and expand peacekeeping and stability operations capabilities”.

The joint mission will include both field exercises – such as training for handling improvised explosive devices – and humanitarian work.

Last year, US soldiers helped build a three-room school and a health clinic.
