SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted to take his own life at a detention facility in eastern Seoul, where he is being held on insurrection charges related to a martial law investigation, a correctional official said Wednesday.

Following the unsuccessful attempt, Kim is being held in a protective cell and his health remains stable, Shin Yong-hae, the head of the correctional center, told lawmakers during a parliamentary hearing.

(서울=연합뉴스) 이보배 황윤기 기자 = '12·3 비상계엄 사태' 주동자 김용현 전 국방부 장관이 구치소에서 극단적 선택을 시도했던 것으로 나타났다.

신용해 법무부 교정본부장은 11일 국회 법제사법위원회 전체회의에서 관련 질문을 받고 "어제 (오후) 11시 52분경 영장 발부 전 대기하는 장소 화장실에서 내의와 내복 바지를 연결한 끈으로 자살 시도를 하는 것을 통제실 근무자가 발견했다"고 밝혔다.

그러면서 "바로 출동해서 문을 여니까 포기하고 나온 사례가 있었다"며 "현재 보호실에 수용해서 건강에는 이상이 없는 것으로 보고받았다"고 말했다.
