내 속에 거하는 죄 (It is sin living in me)

데카르트는 모든 존재를 의심하는 데서 출발합니다. 그리고 생각하고 있는 유일한 자신의 의식을 의심할 수 없다는 결론에 도달합니다. 여기서 그는 당시의 신적 존재에 종속된 인간관에서 자유로운 사고의 주체인 인간으로의 전환을 맞이했고 이것이 근대의 문을 여는 첫 걸음이 됩니다.

율법시대에서 성령시대로의 전환에 근거를 제공한 바울의 이 한 마디는 율법과 십자가 사이에서 주저하던 사람들의 발걸음을 은혜의 강으로 이끈 결정적 사건입니다. 바울은 17절과 20절에서 반복해서 말합니다. "그것을 행하는 자는 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라."

사람의 심령 속에 '자아'와 '죄'의 분리를 통해 죄를 행하는 주체가 '자아'가 아니라 '죄'임을 분명히 합니다. 여기서 죄로부터 벗어날 확실한 이유가 생깁니다. 자아는 하나님의 법을 행하길 원합니다. 반대로 죄는 욕망과 유혹의 올무로 자아를 죄의 구렁텅이로 끌고 갑니다.

어떻게 생각하면 자아의 선택, 의지, 결정을 죄의 탓으로 돌리는 책임회피처럼 들리기도 합니다. 하지만 '자아'와 '죄'를 정확히 분리해낸 바울의 이론은 이후에 '자아'와 '성령'의 관계로 발전할 가능성을 열어줍니다. 죄가 무언가를 행하는 주체 곧 사단의 세력이라는 분명한 인식이야말로 우리가 죄를 대항해서 이겨야 할 당위성에 도달하게 합니다.

이제 죄는 내가 스스로 원해서 짓는 어리석은 동기와 말과 행동이 아니라 물리쳐야 할 적이며 사단의 효과적인 공격 수단이라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 문제는 우리의 힘으로 사단의 계략과 술수를 이길 수 없다는데 있습니다. 여기서 우리는 '압도적인 힘' 곧 성령의 능력을 필요로 하게 됩니다. 사실 우리는 전적 무능력과 부패로 그 분의 도움을 구할 기력조차도 없는 상태입니다. 그런 우리에게 다가오신 성령님의 은혜와 예수님의 십자가 보혈 공로가 우리를 새롭게 하고 치료하십니다.

자신의 곤고함을 발견한 자아는 죄로부터의 탈출을 갈망하고 시도하게 됩니다. 그 첫 걸음이 죄의 근원이 자신에게 있지 않고 자신 속에 동거하는 '죄'라는 것을 발견하고 명확히 인식하는 것입니다. 그 죄로부터 벗어나기 위해 우리는 강력한 힘의 소유자이신 분 곧 죄를 쫓아내고 새로운 주인이 되실 성령님의 능력을 갈망하게 됩니다.

마음속의 이 투쟁은 태초부터 지금까지 계속되어 온 사건입니다. 다만 그 내용을 내가 이제 인식하고 깨닫게 된 것입니다. 그리고 승리하시고 부활하신 예수님을 마음에 초대하여 대신 싸워주시도록 간구하는 것이 "삶의 주권을 주님께 드리는 것"입니다.

오늘도 나의 마음가운데 죄의 유혹과 결박으로 신음하는 자아를 주님앞에 올려드립니다. 성령의 능력과 보혈의 권능으로 자유케 하여주시고 치료하시고 새롭게하여 주시옵소서.

Sin Living in Me

Descartes began by doubting all existence. He then arrived at the conclusion that he could not doubt his own sole thinking consciousness. This marked a paradigm shift from a human view subservient to a divine being at the time, to one where humans were free subjects of thought, becoming the first step in opening the door to modernity.

This single statement by Paul, which provided the foundation for the transition from the Age of Law to the Age of the Spirit, was a pivotal event that led those who hesitated between the Law and the Cross toward grace. Paul reiterates in verses 17 and 20, "It is not I who do it, but sin living in me."

By separating "self" and "sin" within the human spirit, it clarifies that the agent committing sin is not the "self" but "sin" itself. This creates a clear reason to escape from sin. The "self" desires to obey God's law. Conversely, "sin" drags the self into the pit of transgression with the snares of desire and temptation.

At first glance, it might sound like an evasion of responsibility, attributing the self's choices, will, and decisions to sin. However, Paul's precise theoretical distinction between "self" and "sin" opens up the possibility for a relationship between the "self" and the "Holy Spirit" to develop later on. The clear recognition that sin is an active agent, the power of Satan, is precisely what leads us to the imperative of resisting and overcoming sin.

Now we realize that sin is not merely foolish motives, words, and actions that we ourselves originate, but an enemy to be repelled and an effective tool of Satan's attack. The problem is that we cannot defeat Satan's schemes and cunning with our own strength. This is where we need "overwhelming power"—the power of the Holy Spirit. In truth, we are in a state of utter inability and corruption, lacking even the strength to seek His help. Yet, the grace of the Holy Spirit and the merit of Jesus' atoning blood, who approached us in such a state, renew and heal us.

The self, having discovered its wretchedness, longs for and attempts to escape from sin. The first step is discovering and clearly recognizing that the source of sin is not in oneself, but in the "sin" cohabiting within. To break free from that sin, we yearn for the power of the One who possesses immense strength, who can drive out sin and become our new master—the Holy Spirit.

This struggle within the heart has been ongoing since the beginning of time. It is simply that I have now come to recognize and understand its nature. And "entrusting the sovereignty of life to the Lord" is to invite the victorious and resurrected Jesus into our hearts and implore Him to fight on our behalf.

Today, I lift up before the Lord my self, groaning under the temptation and bondage of sin in my heart. May I be set free, healed, and made new by the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of the precious blood.
