I think every award turned out as many journalists had predicted. It was a really hollywierd-like result. Hollywood never betrays our expectation. I don't think Russell Crowe's private scandal plays an important role in failing to get an award. Russell Crowe had already won award of best leading actor with starring "Gladiator" in 73rd academic awards so it was natural that Danzel should win an award, this time. Of course, I agree with your opinion that Academy wants to make an hot and sensational issue to got a spotlight from the press. Only several awards to African-American actor or actress cannot solve fundamental racial sallad bowl in America.
I think "Beautiful Mind" is Ok but it is just one of those movies in Hollywood. But it has really great merit, humanity. Oscar is really crazy about humanity theme. Needless to say, Ron Haward is really an Amreican-like american director. He has an eye for meeting Hollywood cheesy tastes. Oscar is still too conservative to accept foreign directors or actresses.
I agree Shrek is a good animated featured film. I think Dream Work's sharp sarcasm toward stink Disney was really attrative and successful parody. It is nice to hear Robert Redford got an honor.

This year Oscar went to Washington and Berry for best actor and best actress. Best picture, however, went to A Beautiful Mind. What is this about? Crow should have received the Oscar since it was his acting that won the best picture. A beautiful mind was not a "great" art picture like the Titanic. A beautiful mind was the best picture of the year because of R. Crow. Why did they give these awards to Washington? I have two geusses for reason and neither of them does not reflect true philosophy of the Academy.
1) Personality of Crow was not something Academy want.
2) Due to the steady decline of TV viewers, they shocked the country.
Reason 1 maybe acceptable to some, but not a valid one. Crow is an asshole, but he is a good actor. What Crow does off the silver screen should not be factored into the decision.
Reason 2 is a slap in the face for Denzel. Washington is a good actor but he does not deserve this particular Oscar. Academy chose him because they wanted to shock the viewers to say, "Hellow black people, you can watch the ceremony, too" I love Denzel's performance but this was not the year. First time in history for blacks to sweep the Oscar! was the headline most people decided to go with. This is a reverse discrimination at it's best! Nothing but a stunt for publicity.
