Overture
F. R. Scott (1899~1985)
In the dark room, under a cone of light, You precisely play the Mozart sonata. The bright Clear notes fly like sparks through the air And trace a flickering pattern of music there.
Your hands dart in the light, your fingers flow. They are ten careful operatives in a row That pick their packets of sound from steel bars Constructing harmonies as sharp as stars.
But how shall I hear old music? This is an hour Of new beginnings, concepts warring for power, Decay of systemsthe tissue of art is torn With overtures of an era being born.
And this perfection which is less yourself Then Mozart, seems a trinket on a shelf, A pretty octave played before a window Beyond whose curtain grows a world crescendo.

The Bear on the Delhi Road
Earle Birney (1904~ )
Unreal tall as a myth by the road the Himalayan bear is beating the brilliant air with his crooked arms About him two men bare spindly as locusts leap
One pulls on a ring in the great soft nose His mate flicks flicks with a stick up at the rolling eyes
They have not led him here down from the fabulous hills to this bald alien plain and the clamorous world to kill but simply to teach him to dance
They are peaceful both these spare men of Kashmir and the bear alive is their living too If far on the Delhi way around him galvanic they dance it is merely to wear wear from his shaggy body the tranced wish forever to stay only an ambling bear four-footed in berries
It is no more joyous for them in this hot dust to prance out of reach of the praying claws sharpened to paw for ants in the shadows of deodars It is not easy to free myth from reality or rear this fellow up to lurch lurch with them in the tranced dancing of men
Hunterꡑs Moon
Ralph Gustafson (1909~ )
The moon was gold and the leaves were gold. The red leaves had fallen and the pallor Of the soft aspen was lighted, as gold, By the hunterꡑs moon, the first full Moon of October. She stood on the verandah, Facing that upper gold moon (My arms lightly, closely around her As if the time would come now.) Foliage was fallen thickly, the lawn Almost uncertain, the dry brown leaves Fallen, Across the pathway The last flowers, a further frost Was promised.
She did not like deer To be in the forested hills. It is a hunterꡑs Moon, she said. But it was beautiful, The dense covered hills, the moon above, The moment, the way it was, The moment.

For the Sisters of the Hotel Dieu
A. M. Klein (1909~1972)
In pairs, as if to illustrate their sisterhood, the sisters pace the hospital garden walks. In their robes black and white immaculate hoods they are like birds, the safe domestic fowl of the House of God.
O biblic birds, who fluttered to me in my childhood illnesses ―me little, afraid, ill, not of your race,― the cool wing for my fever, the hovering solace, the sense of angels― be thanked, O plumage of paradise, be praised.

Green Rain
Dorothy Livesay (1909~ )
I remember long veils of green rain Feathered like the shawl of my grandmother― Green from the half―green of the spring trees Waving in the valley.
I remember the road Like the one which leads to my grandmotherꡑs house, A warm house, with green carpets, Geraniums, a trilling canary
And shining horse-hair chirs; And the silence, full of the rainꡑs falling Was like my grandmotherꡑs parlour Alive with herself and her voice, rising and falling― Rain and wind intermingled.
I remember on that day I was thinking only of my love And of my loveꡑs house. But now I remember the day As I remember my grandmother. I remember the rain as the feathery fringe of her shawl.

For Mao Tse-Tung: A Meditation on Flies and Kings
Irving Layton (1912~ )
So, circling about my head, a fly. Haloes of frantic monotone. Then a smudge of blood smoking On my fingers, let Jesus and Buddha cry.
Is theirs the way? Forgiveness of hurt? Leprosariums? Perhaps. But I Am burning flesh and bone, An indifferent creature between Cloud and a stone; Smash insects with my boot, Feast on torn flowers, deride The nonillion bushes by the road (Their patience is very great.) Jivatma, they endure, Endure and proliferate.
And the meek-browed and poor In their solid tenements (Etiolated, they do not dance.) Worry of priest and of commissar: None may re-create them who are Lowly and universal as the moss Or like vegetation the winds toss Sweeping to the open lake and sky. I put down these words in blood
And would not be misunderstood: They have their Christs and their legends And out of their pocks and ailments Weave dear enchantments― Poet and dictator, you are as alien as I.
On this remote and classic lake Only the lapsing of the water can I hear And the cold wind through the sumac. The moneyed and their sunburnt children Swarm other shores. Here is ecstasy, The sunꡑs outline made lucid By each lacustral cloud And man naked with mystery. They dance best who dance with desire,
Who lifting feet of fire from fire Weave before they lie down A red carpet for the sun.
I pity the meek in their religious cages And flee them; and flee The universal sodality Of joy-haters, joy-destroyers (O Schiller, wine-drunk and silly!) The sufferers and their thick rages; Enter this tragic forest where the trees Uprear as if for the graves of man, All function and desire to offend With themselves finally done; And mark the dark pines farther on, The sunꡑs fires touching them at will, Motionless like silent khans Mourning serene and terrible Their Lord entombed in the blazing hill.

Cookꡑs Mountains
P. K. Page (1917~ )
By naming them he made them. They were there before he came but they were not the same. It was his gaze that glazed each one. He saw the Glass House Mountains in his glass. They shone.
And still they shine. We saw them as we drove― sudden, surrealist, conical they rose out of the rain forest. The driver said, ꡐ Those are the Glass House Mountains up aheadꡑ
And instantly they altered to become the sum of shape and name. Two strangenesses united into one more strange than either. Neither of us now remembers how they looked before they broke the light to fragments as the driver spoke.
Like mounds of mica, hive-shaped hothouses, mountains of mirror glimmering they form in diamond panes behind the tree ferns of the dark imagination, burn and shake the lovely light of Queensland like a bell reflecting Cook upon a deck his tongue silvered with paradox and metaphor.

let me follow into your churchbarn through the gate to the onion domes where your carrot harvest burns a fire of candles,
let me follow in the cool light as you move through Godꡑs storehouse as you put the bins in order as you set each grain in place;
let me follow as your voice moves in the familiar liturgy through the low caves of Gregorian chant and let me hear little father
how you pray for all your geese for the cow fertile at Easter and the foundations of new houses to be strong and firmly set;
let me hear how you beseech for all your people a clear road, an open gate and a new snowfall fresh, dazzling, white as birchbark.

Snow
Margaret Avison (1918~ )
Nobody stuffs the world in at your eyes. The optic heart must venture:a jail-break And re-creation. Sedges and wild rice Chase rivery pewter. The astonished cinders quake With rhizomes. All ways through the electric air Trundle candy-bright disks;they are deaolate Toys if the soulꡑs gates seal, and cannot bear, Must shudder under, creationꡑs unseen freight. But soft, there is snowꡑs lehend:colour of mourning. Along the yellow Yangtze where the wheel Spins an indifferent stasis thatꡑs deathꡑs warning. Asters of tumbled quietness reveal Their petals. Suffering this starry blur The rest may ring your change, sad listener.

Occasions of Desire
Phyllis Webb
Occasions of desire with their attendant envies, the white heat of the cold swan dying, create their gestures, obscene or most beautiful. Oh, the clear shell of a swanꡑs fluted wings!
And as the old swan calls clarity from dark waters, sailing triumphant into the forgotten, desire in its moving is that rapacious cry, gorgeous as the torrent Lethe, and wise.
And if the curl of cygnets on the Avon, so freshly broken from their perfect shells, take from a dying bird not moral or enticement, but float with their own white mother, that is just. Oh, imperious innocence to envy only the water bearing such beauty!

Beautiful Creatures Brief as These - For Jay Macpherson
D. G. Jones (1929~ )
Like butterflies but lately come From long cocoons of summer These little girls start back to school To swarm the sidewalks, playing-fields, And litter air with colour.
So slight they look within their clothes, Their dresses looser than the Sulphurꡑs wings, It seems that even if the wind alone Were not to break them in the lofty trees, They could not bear the weight of things.
And yet they cry into the moirning air And hang from railings upside down And laugh, as though the world were theirs And all its buildings, trees, and stones Were toys, were gifts of a benignant sun.

For you I will be a ghetto jew and dance and put white stockings on my twisted limbs and poison wells across the town
For you I will be an apostate jew and tell the Spanish priest of the blood vow in the Talmud and where the bones of the child are hid
For you I will be a banker jew and bring to ruin a proud old hunting king and end his line
For you I will be a Broadway jew and cry in theatres for my mother and sell bargain goods beneath the counter
For you I will be a doctor jew and search in all the garbage cans for foreskins to sew back again
For you I will be a Dachau jew and lie down in lime with twisted limbs and bloated pain no mind can understand

A. M. 클레인
Ukrainian Church
Miriam Waddington (1917~ )
Little father your rhythmic black robe against white snow improvises you a black note on a white keyboard;
let me follow into your churchbarn through the gate to the onion domes where your carrot harvest burns a fire of candles,
let me follow in the cool light as you move through Godꡑs storehouse as you put the bins in order as you set each grain in place;
let me follow as your voice moves in the familiar liturgy through the low caves of Gregorian chant and let me hear little father
how you pray for all your geese for the cow fertile at Easter and the foundations of new houses to be strong and firmly set;
let me hear how you beseech for all your people a clear road, an open gate and a new snowfall fresh, dazzling, white as birchbark.

Study:The Bath
Raymond Souster
In the almost dim light of the bathroom a woman steps from white tub towel around her shoulders.
Drops of water glisten on her body, slight buttocks, neck, tight belly, fall at intervals from the slightly plumed oval of crotch.
Neck bent forward eyes collected her attention gathered at the ends of fingers
as she removes dead skin from her nipples.

The Speaking Earth
Eli Mandel (1922~ )
grandfathers fall into it their mighty beards muffled in grass
and admirals, the sea-sounding men
lovers fall into the earth like rain in wet dark bodies
listen, our lady earth flowers into the sea-green language of grass and drowned admirals
listen:in bearded branches clasped like broken hands admiring birds lovers singing of their kiss before and after all the words

The Genius
Leonard Cohen (1934~ )
