Chapter Three: Simile and Parable
1. 사리불이 깨달음을 얻다
2.所以者何오 我昔從佛하야 聞如是法호니 見諸菩薩은 受記作佛이어니와 而我等은 不預斯事라하야 甚自感傷하야 失於如來無量知見이라호이다
왜냐하면, 저가 예전에 이런 법문을 들었는데, 보살들은 수기(授記)를 받아 성불하리라 하였으나, 저희들은 그 일에 참여하지 못하여 매우 슬프고 상심하여 여래의 한량없는 지견(知見)을 잃었다고 하였습니다.
Why do I say this? Because in the past when I heard a Law of this kind from the Buddha and saw how the bodhisattvas received prophecies that in time they would attain Buddhahood, I and the others felt that we had no part in the affair. We were deeply grieved to think we would never gain the immeasurable insight of the Thus Come One.<Translated into English by Burton Watson >
Why do I say this: 왜냐하면,
Because in the past when I heard: 저가 예전에~ 들었는데
a Law of this kind from the Buddha: 이런 법문을
and saw how the bodhisattvas received prophecies that in time: 보살들은 수기(授記)를 받아
they would attain Buddhahood: 성불하리라 하였으나 I and the others: 저희들은
felt that we had no part in the affair: 그 일에 참여하지 못하여
We were deeply grieved : 매우 슬프고 상심하여
to think we would never gain: 잃었다고 하였습니다.
the immeasurable insight of the Thus Come One: 여래의 한량없는 지견(知見)을

"What is the reason? In the past, I heard a Dharma such as this from the Buddha, and saw the Bodhisattvas receive predictions of Buddhahood, but we had no part in this matter. I was deeply hurt that I had lost the limitless knowledge and vision of the Thus Come One.

세존이시여, 저는 항상 산림(山林)에나 나무 밑에 홀로 있어 앉기도 하고 거닐기도 하면서, 생각하기를 ‘우리들도 법의 성품에 함께 들어갔는데, 어찌하여 여래께서는 소승법(小乘法)으로 제도하시는가. 이것은 우리의 허물이요 세존의 탓이 아니라’ 하였습니다.
"World-Honored One, I have constantly lived in the mountain forest or alone under the trees, sometimes sitting, sometimes walking around, and always I have thought to myself, since I and the others all alike have entered into the nature of the Law, why does the Thus Come One use the Law of the Lesser Vehicle to bring us salvation? "World-Honored One: 세존이시여
I have constantly lived in the mountain forest or alone under the trees, 저는 항상 산림(山林)에나 나무 밑에
sometimes sitting, sometimes walking around :홀로 있어 앉기도 하고 거닐기도 하면서
and always I have thought to myself: 생각하기를
since I and the others all alike have entered into : 우리들도 ~함께 들어갔는데
the nature of the Law: 법의 성품에
why does the Thus Come One : 어찌하여 여래께서는
use the Law of the Lesser Vehicle to bring us salvation: 소승법(小乘法)으로 제도하시는가
But the fault is ours: 이것은 우리의 허물이요
not that of the World-Honored One: 세존의 탓이 아니라’ 하였습니다

"World Honored One, when I used to dwell alone in mountain forests at the foot of trees, whether sitting or walking I continually had this thought: 'We all identically enter into the Dharma nature. Why has The Thus Come One shown us deliverance by means of the Small Vehicle Dharma? It is our fault, not the World Honored One's.'

3.世尊이시여 我常獨處山林樹下하야 若坐若行에 每作是念호대 我等도 同入法性이어늘 云何如來이 以小乘法으로 而見濟度어뇨 是我等咎라 非世尊也이로소이다
4.所以者何오 若我等이 待說所因하야 成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提者인댄 必以大乘으로 而得度脫이어늘 然이나 我等은 不解方便과 隨宜所設하고 初聞佛法코는 遇便信受하야 思惟取證호이다
그 까닭은, 만약 우리들도 성불의 원인까지 말씀하시기를 기다려서 최상의 깨달음을 성취하였더라면, 반드시 대승으로써 제도하였을 것이지만, 저희들은 방편으로 마땅함을 따라 말씀하신 것을 알지 못하고 부처님의 법문을 처음 듣고는 곧 그대로 믿어서 결과를 얻으려 하였습니다.
Why do I say this? If he had been willing to wait until the true means for attaining anuttara-samyak-sambodhi was preached, then we would surely have obtained release through the Great Vehicle. But we failed to understand that the Buddha was employing expedient means and preaching what was appropriate to the circumstances. So when we first heard the Law of the Buddha, we immediately believed and accepted it, supposing that we had gained understanding.

"What is the reason? If we had waited for the lecture on the cause of realizing Anuttarasamyaksambodhi, we should certainly have been delivered by means of the Great Vehicle. But we did not understand that expedient devices were spoken in accord with what was appropriate. Therefore, when we first heard the BuddhaDharma, upon encountering it we immediately believed and accepted it, considered it, and took certification.

세존이시여, 제가 예전부터 지금까지 밤낮으로 스스로 책망하였는데 이제 부처님으로부터 듣지 못하던 미증유(未曾有)의 법문을 들었습니다. 이제 모든 의혹과 회한을 버리고 몸과 마음이 태연하여 편안함을 얻었습니다. 오늘에야 진정한 부처님의 아들이며, 부처님의 법문을 듣고 태어났으며, 법으로부터 화생(化生)하였고, 불법을 얻은 줄을 알았습니다.”
"World-Honored One, for a long time now, all day and throughout the night, I have repeatedly taxed myself with this thought. But now I have heard from the Buddha what I had never heard before, a Law never known in the past, and it has ended all my doubts and regrets. My body and mind are at ease and I have gained a wonderful feeling of peace and security. Today at last I understand that truly I am the Buddha's son, born from the Buddha's mouth, born through conversion to the Law, gaining my share of the Buddha's Law!"

I have gained a wonderful feeling of peace and security: 편안함을 얻었습니다
Today at last I understand that truly I am the Buddha's son: 오늘에야 진정한 부처님의 아들이며
born from the Buddha's mouth: 부처님의 법문을 듣고 태어났으며
born through conversion to the Law: 법으로부터 화생(化生)하였고
gaining my share of the Buddha's Law!: 불법을 얻은 줄을 알았습니다

"World Honored One, from of old I have, day and night, continually reproached myself. Now, from the Buddha, I have heard what I never heard before, this Dharma which has never been before, and all my doubts have been severed. My body and mind are blissfull and I am at peace.
"Today, indeed, I know that I am a true disciple of the Buddha, born from the Buddha's mouth, transformed from the Dharma; I have obtained a share of the Buddhadharma."
