BUNGEOPPANG
by D.J. YOON
Hands so cold
Blowing warm air
Into the winter wind.
A grandmother waits
For the bus
With her grandson.
The sweet smell drifts
Fish-shaped bread baking
The boy can’t resist.
He runs ahead
To the tiny cart
Calling, “Grandma, come!”
Grandma smiles
Searching for her purse.
She unfolds
A wrinkled 1,000-won bill
Smooths it with care
And buys her grandson
A golden fish.
One fish
Two fish
Three fish
Each bite he takes
Her heart feels full.
It doesn’t matter
If the bus is late.
Above them
A family of sparrows
Perches on the power lines
Watching from the start.
They tilt their heads
Whispering softly
“Do you think they’re happy too?”
And chirping to each other
“Where is our grandma?”

The boy
Perhaps warmed
By the fish he ate
Pushes the cold away
With both hands.
Appreciation Review 感想
Bungeoppang is a warm and gentle poem about a loving moment between a grandmother and her grandson on a cold winter day.
The poem shows how something small — like buying a sweet, fish-shaped bread — can bring great happiness.
The simple words and clear pictures help readers feel the smell of the bread, the cold air, and the love between the two.
The sparrows watching from above make the story even softer and more touching.
With its kind mood and easy rhythm, this poem reminds children that love can make even the coldest day feel warm.
