Hong Kong stocks reversed course on Monday afternoon to end with a 0.2 per cent loss as investors cashed in recent gainers; lower crude prices prompted a sell-off in oil plays, eclipsing gains in mainland financial plays.
Debutante mainland real-estate developer Soho China lagged expectations in a sector crowded with many choice names, settling at HK$9.55 in its first day of trade for a gain of 15.1 per cent above its HK$8.30 initial public offering price.
The market rose sharply in the morning but erased its gains in the afternoon as the benchmark Hang Seng Index approached the 28,500 to 29,000 levels.
â?œJust as soon as the market hit 28,500, people said, â?˜thanksâ?™,â? said Matt McKeith, head of equity dealing at First State Investments.
The HSI gained more than 2 per cent at its day high but closed 61.23 points lower at 27,770.29. The H-share index shed 0.2 per cent, or 28.2 points, to 17,511.82.
Main-board turnover was HK$154.6 billion, sharply higher than Fridayâ?™s HK$139.8 billion.
Analysts said the market would probably trade sideways before a key parliamentary meeting by mainland party leaders next week.

â?œWeâ?™re still in a correction; weâ?™ll be locked in range before the congressional meeting,â? said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities.

Among oil shares, oil producers PetroChina slid 3.4 per cent to HK$14.10 and CNOOC slumped 4.3 per cent to HK$11.96.
Other large-cap decliners include China Mobile, which fell 1 per cent to HK$128.60. China Telecom, the countryâ?™s top fixed-line provider, dropped 4 per cent to HK$5.98.
Mainland financial plays tracked the sharp gains in their Shanghai-traded counterparts. China Life, the countryâ?™s top life underwriter, climbed 1.5 per cent to HK$49.05.
Top mainland lender ICBC, the most traded stock after China Life, raced up 4.5 per cent to HK$6.26. China Construction Bank jumped 2.4 per cent to HK$7.29.
Investors also bid up coal producer China Shenhua, a day before its shares were set to debut in Shanghai. China Shenhua shares finished up 1.8 per cent at HK$45.80.
