The moods in both the Knicks and Cavaliers locker rooms accurately matched what just transpired on the floor on a night when the soul of Reggie Miller took the body of Damon Jones – for a half.

Jones scored 24 of his 29 points in the first half, as he lit up the Knicks for 6 of 7 shooting from 3-point territory during those initial 24 minutes.

LeBron James also scored 29, though in a far quieter and more subtle manner than Jones. The perimeter shooting of Jones freed up James and Larry Hughes to be at their most effective, which is when they can outplay the opposing wings with their superior all-around play.

“We’re getting better in spurts,” said Stephon Marbury. “In order for us to get to where we want to be we need to do it for 48 minutes.”

Leading the comeback charge for the Knicks wasn’t Marbury though, but Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford. Robinson made the improbable look easy time after time, shooting 9-10 from the field. With Marbury and Steve Francis combining to go 1-10 from the floor, it is clear that the younger guards are beginning to surpass the elders as the scorers the Knicks need to lean on.

“I’m probably being too laid back,” added Marbury. “I’m trying to do something that I’ve never done before.

Lakers center Chris Mihm on Tuesday underwent successful surgery on his right ankle and will miss the rest of the season.

Mihm injured the ankle on March 12 and played just one more game last season.

The 7-foot center underwent surgery on July 26, causing him to miss training camp, the entire exhibition schedule and all eight regular-season games. [READ]

O'Neal's status is day to day, the Heat said. He was hurt in a collision Sunday with Houston's Chuck Hayes, who is expected to miss up to two weeks with a bruised and hyperextended left knee. [READ]

A $1 million civil lawsuit has been filed by an anonymous woman against Portland Trail Blazers forward Zach Randolph, claiming he sexually assaulted her.

The woman's suit claims Randolph's actions "constitute, by any definition, an extraordinary transgression of the bounds of socially tolerable conduct, and they also exceeded any reasonable limit of social toleration."

The Blazers said they could not comment because it was an ongoing legal matter.

The woman said Randolph assaulted her Aug. 11 in a hotel room after he offered her $500 to perform a sex show with another woman in the room. [READ]

Texas Tech AD Gerald Myers insisted Tuesday that Bob Knight did nothing wrong when he "quickly lifted" the chin of Michael Prince in the latest clash between the hot-tempered coach and a player.

Prince and his parents also defended Knight, who confronted the forward and pushed his chin upward, as if to make him look the coach in the eye, during a timeout on Monday night.

"Coach Knight did not slap Michael," Myers said in a statement. "Michael came off the court with his head down and coach Knight quickly lifted Michael's chin and said, 'Hold your head up and don't worry about your mistakes. Just play the game."' [READ]

Isiah Thomas denied he said anything about breaking Bruce Bowen's neck during their profanity-laced altercation Saturday night in San Antonio, and defended his actions of picking a fight with a player.

Bowen told a San Antonio newspaper he heard Thomas yell to break his neck.

"That's not true," Thomas said. "I said the next time he goes up, stick your foot underneath his like he sticks his under yours and see how he feels if his foot is broken."

Before facing the Cavaliers last night, Thomas said he did not regret seeing the replays of his verbal attack on Bowen and his yelling to his players, "Next time he does that to you, break his [bleeping] foot."

Thomas also got into it with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and had to be held back by assistant coach Herb Williams. [READ]

At Kings practice Monday, Sacramento guard Mike Bibby aggravated his sore right shooting wrist that was injured simultaneously with his thumb in an Oct. 22 exhibition game in Reno.

Since Bibby made his surprise start in the regular-season opener, the wrist has been a bother, and the latest aggravation might force him to miss Wednesday's game against Memphis at Arco Arena.

"We have concern about getting proper rest for that thing and making sure he's ready to play against Memphis," Kings coach Eric Musselman said. "It's obviously continuing to bother him."

Shooting guard Kevin Martin said Bibby's pain was evident when he hurt it.

"It was on defense," he said. "He was guarding somebody, went in, and I guess he got caught. He grabbed it right when it happened. He's going through a lot of pain right now with that." [READ]

Two days after playing the full 48 minutes in an 89-80 victory over Indiana, Bulls center Ben Wallace skipped practice.

Coach Scott Skiles said he wanted to give Wallace two days of rest because of a bruised left knee suffered sometime last week. The Bulls did not practice Sunday.

As for never sending in a substitute for Wallace, Skiles doesn’t think that will happen very often.

“I actually intended to bring P.J. (Brown) back for him at some point and give him a blow,” Skiles said Monday at the Berto Center. “But I kept asking him (during timeouts) if he was all right. He’s said, ‘Yeah, everything’s good.’

“Then we came rushing back so quickly, I didn’t want to disrupt anything. Every time I kind of went to take him out, it just didn’t seem right. Clearly, he played very well. He’s capable of doing it.” [READ]

Although the plan had been to work Williams back slowly, Monday's display, which came on the heels of a lethargic 94-72 Sunday home loss to Houston, could have Riley fast-tracking Williams' return.

Williams practiced this past Thursday for the first time since undergoing July 21 arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
