Lee to visit India, Vietnam next week

이 대통령이 다음 주 인도와 베트남을 방문할 예정이다

President Lee Jae Myung is expected to attend an online multilateral summit jointly led by the United Kingdom and France, Friday, to discuss ensuring free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Cheong Wa Dae official said, Thursday.

이재명 대통령이 금요일 영국과 프랑스가 공동 주최하는 온라인 다자 정상회의에 참석해 호르무즈 해협의 자유로운 통행 보장 문제를 논의할 예정이라고 청와대 고위 관계자가 밝혔다.

The official said the summit will take the form of a video conference, with participating leaders likely to discuss the global energy supply chain, international solidarity and other security issues related to the Middle East amid the U.S.-Israel war on Iran, which began in late February.

이 관계자는 정상회담이 화상 회의 형식으로 열릴 것이며, 참가 정상들은 지난 2월 말 시작된 미국과 이스라엘의 이란 공격 사태와 관련해 글로벌 에너지 공급망, 국제적 연대 및 중동과 관련된 기타 안보 문제들을 논의할 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다.

The meeting will take place amid disruptions to the global energy supply caused by Iran’s blockade of the strait, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints through which 70 percent of Korea's imported crude oil is transported.

이번 회의는 이란이 호르무즈 해협을 봉쇄하면서 전 세계 에너지 공급에 차질이 빚어지는 가운데 열릴 예정인데, 호르무즈 해협은 전 세계 에너지 수송의 가장 중요한 요충지 중 하나로, 한국이 수입하는 원유의 70%가 이곳을 통과한다.

“A multilateral summit jointly hosted by the U.K. and France is being planned, and our president is currently considering attendance positively,” the official said.

“영국과 프랑스가 공동 주최하는 다자 정상회담이 계획 중이며, 우리 대통령은 현재 참석을 긍정적으로 검토하고 있다”고 이 관계자는 말했다.

“Freedom of navigation and security are in everyone’s interest, and the president is expected to share his views with leaders of the countries that hold similar positions.”

“항행의 자유와 안보는 모든 사람의 이익에 부합하며, 대통령은 이와 같은 입장을 공유하는 국가들의 지도자들과 자신의 견해를 나눌 것으로 보인다.”

The meeting is planned to take place on Friday evening (Korean time), with around 70 to 80 countries invited, including those from Europe and Asia as well as international organizations.

이 회의는 한국 시간으로 금요일 저녁에 열릴 예정이며, 유럽과 아시아 국가들을 비롯해 국제기구 등 약 70~80개국이 초청되었다.

Korea has participated in similar multilateral forums on the Middle East issue, jointly issuing a statement with leaders from more than 20 countries to denounce Iran's blockade of the strait, and participating in a France-led meeting of defense chiefs from 35 nations and a U.K.-led meeting of foreign ministry officials.

한국은 중동 문제와 관련된 유사한 다자간 포럼에 참여해 20여 개국 정상들과 공동 성명을 발표하며 이란의 해협 봉쇄를 규탄했고, 프랑스가 주재한 35개국 국방장관 회의와 영국이 주재한 외교부 고위관료 회의에도 참석했다.

The U.S. will not attend Friday's meeting, as it is directly involved in the conflict, the official said.

이 관계자는 미국이 분쟁에 직접 연루되어 있기 때문에 금요일 회의에 참석하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다.

Nevertheless, the official said that the nonparticipation of the U.S. in the summit does not mean it is being excluded.

그럼에도 불구하고, 이 관계자는 미국이 정상회담에 불참한다고 해서 배제된 것은 아니라고 말했다.

“The U.S. has been coordinating issues with the U.K. and France, while also maintaining cooperation with the Korean side,” he said.

“미국은 영국 및 프랑스와 현안을 조율해 온 한편, 한국 측과의 협력도 유지해 왔다”고 그는 말했다.

Whether China is included in the scheduled summit remains unclear, according to the official.

이 관계자에 따르면, 예정된 정상회담에 중국이 포함될지는 아직 불분명하다.

In the meantime, Lee reiterated the importance of protecting universal human rights — the latest in a series of related remarks after Israel heavily criticized him over a social media post it claimed was “trivializing the Holocaust.”

한편, 이 대통령은 보편적 인권 보호의 중요성을 거듭 강조했는데, 이는 이스라엘 측이 그의 소셜 미디어 게시물을 두고 "홀로코스트를 비하하고 있다"고 강력히 비판한 이후 나온 일련의 관련 발언 중 가장 최근의 것입니다.

“This war gave us not only a challenge to reform Korea’s industrial structures but also an opportunity to reconsider Korea’s diplomatic position and role,” the president said during a meeting with senior aides, Thursday.

“이번 전쟁은 우리에게 한국의 산업 구조를 개혁해야 할 과제를 안겨주었을 뿐만 아니라, 한국의 외교적 입지와 역할을 재고할 기회도 제공했다”고 대통령은 목요일 고위 참모들과의 회의에서 말했다.

“Now Korea is one of the leading countries to which the world is paying attention.

“현재 한국은 전 세계의 주목을 받는 선도적인 국가 중 하나입니다.

It cannot and should not turn away from universal values such as world peace, international norms and human rights protection.”

한국은 세계 평화, 국제적 규범, 인권 보호와 같은 보편적 가치에서 등을 돌릴 수 없으며, 또한 그래서는 안 됩니다.”

He added, “We need to gradually gain trust and respect from other countries so that we can expand our national interest in the long term.”

그는 “장기적으로 국익을 확대하기 위해서는 다른 나라들로부터 점차 신뢰와 존경을 얻어야 한다”고 덧붙였다.

On April 10, Lee posted a video of Israeli soldiers apparently abusing the body of a young Palestinian and compared this to wartime atrocities including the Holocaust.

4월 10일, 이 대통령은 이스라엘 군인들이 한 젊은 팔레스타인인의 시신을 학대하는 것으로 보이는 영상을 게시하고, 이를 홀로코스트를 포함한 전쟁 중의 잔혹 행위와 비교했다.

This drew immediate strong condemnation from Israel’s foreign ministry. Since then, the president has made several comments about the protection of human rights on multiple occasions.

이에 대해 이스라엘 외무부는 즉각 강력한 비난을 쏟아냈다. 그 이후로 대통령은 여러 차례에 걸쳐 인권 보호에 관한 발언을 해왔다.

Visits to India, Vietnam

Cheong Wa Dae said that energy security may also be addressed during Lee’s six-day trip to India and Vietnam next week.

청와대는 다음 주 이 대통령의 6일간의 인도·베트남 순방 기간 중 에너지 안보 문제도 논의될 수 있다고 밝혔다.

Lee is scheduled to visit India from Sunday to Tuesday and Vietnam from Tuesday to Friday for summits with the leaders of each country.

이 대통령은 일요일부터 화요일까지 인도를, 화요일부터 금요일까지는 베트남을 방문해 각국 정상과 정상회담을 가질 예정이다.

“These countries share similar positions regarding energy supply chain issues and are in a position to cooperate, so we expect these matters to be discussed as well,” National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said.

“이들 국가는 에너지 공급망 문제에 대해 유사한 입장을 공유하고 있으며 협력할 수 있는 여건이 갖춰져 있어, 이러한 사안들도 논의될 것으로 기대한다”고 위성락 국가안보보좌관은 말했다.

Lee will discuss economic cooperation in shipbuilding, finance, artificial intelligence and defense in a summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Monday.

이 대통령은 월요일 뉴델리에서 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리와 정상회담을 갖고 조선, 금융, 인공지능, 국방 분야의 경제 협력에 대해 논의할 예정이다.

“The two sides will also maintain close coordination on energy supply chain issues amid rapidly changing international conditions,” Wi said.

“양측은 급변하는 국제 정세 속에서 에너지 공급망 문제에 대해서도 긴밀히 협력할 것”이라고 위 보좌관은 말했다.

On Wednesday, Lee will meet with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

수요일, 이 대통령은 베트남 공산당 총비서인 토 람(To Lam)과 회담을 가질 예정이다.

They will seek to strengthen cooperation in nuclear energy, energy supply chains and critical minerals.

양측은 원자력 에너지, 에너지 공급망 및 핵심 광물 분야에서의 협력을 강화할 방안을 모색할 것이다.

Joke-Never Felt Better          이보다 더 좋았던 적은 없소

A happy 90-year-old man walked into the doctor's office. He was all smiles and laughed with the nurses and staff, until they brought him in to see the doctor.

90세의 한 노인이 환한 미소를 띠고 병원에 들어섰다.  그는 의사 진료실로 안내될 때까지 줄곧 간호사들과 직원들에게 환하게 웃으며 즐거운 모습을 보였다.

The doctor examined him and told him he should start eating better, because his health was not in that great a shape.

의사는 그를 진찰한 뒤, 건강 상태가 그리 좋지 않으니 더 영양가가 있는 음식을 드셔야겠다고 말했다.

The old man was surprised, he said to his doctor, "I've never felt better. I have an 18-year old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?"

노인은 깜짝 놀라며 의사를 향해 말했다. “제 인생에서 건강이 지금보다 더 좋았던 적은 없소.

18살짜리 신부가 내 아이를 임신 했거든요. 이거 어떻게 생각하세요?”

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then said, "I have an elderly friend who is a hunter and never misses a season.

의사는 잠시 그의 질문을 곰곰이 생각하더니 이렇게 말했다. “사냥을 즐기는 노년의 친구가 한 분 있는데, 사냥철에는 한 번도 사냥깜을 놓친 적이 없어요.

One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun.

어느 날 좀 서둘러 나가던 중, 실수로 총 대신 우산을 집어 들고 나갔죠.”

When he got to the Creek, he saw a rabbit sitting beside the stream. He raised his umbrella and went, 'bang, bang' and the rabbit fell dead.

개울에 도착했을 때, 그는 개울가에 앉아 있는 토끼 한 마리를 보았어요.  그는 우산을 들어 올려 “탕, 탕” 하고 쏘자 토끼는 죽어 쓰러졌대요.

What do you think of that?"

“이거 어떻게 생각하세요?”

The 90-year-old said, "I'd say somebody else killed that rabbit."

90세 노인은 “그 토끼는 다른 누군가가 쏜 것이겠지요” 라고 말했다.

The doctor smiled, "My point exactly."

의사는 미소를 지으며 “제말이 바로 그 말이죠”라고 말했다.
