Clippers, Dunleavy Agree To Four-Year Deal

The Los Angeles Clippers have reached agreement with Mike Dunleavy on a four-year contract extension for more than $21 million, the L.A. Times is reporting.

Andy Roeser, Clippers executive vice president, and Dunleavy's agent, Warren LeGarie, late last week finalized the framework of a package that will pay Dunleavy more than $5.3 million a season, multiple team sources said Monday. The Clippers have not announced the agreement because Roeser and LeGarie were still negotiating bonuses for Dunleavy tied to the team's future playoff performances.

Dunleavy was in Sacramento with the Clippers on Monday preparing for the final game of a road trip Tuesday against the Kings. Asked about his new contract, Dunleavy said he had hoped "something could be worked out because this is where I want to be, which is what I've said all along." [READ]

The Charlotte Bobcats waived guard Alan Anderson Monday, and apparently intend to sign a veteran sometime in the next few days.

"We did it to clip a roster spot," coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff told the Observer. "There's not a trade involved, but at some point we will replace the roster spot with a veteran player."

Bickerstaff would not say who the Bobcats are pursuing or at what position they seek help. [READ]

John Paxson, GM of the Chicago Bulls , spoke at length with Ben Wallace for a second straight day Monday, trying to make sure Wallace's insubordination from last Saturday night didn't continue.

"I don't expect this to cause our team to fracture, which is always something you worry about," Paxson said.

"Every year, Scott and I go over the team handbook," Paxson said. "If there are things we want to change, we change them. That rule was borne out of some things I saw when I first got the job that didn't look good. It was more out of uniformity than anything else. It wasn't to take an individual's personality away from the game. Anything can be revisited. But I'm not saying that rule is going to be revisited tomorrow." [READ]

New Jersey Nets forward Clifford Robinson underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Monday to remove torn cartilage from his left knee, Nets President Rod Thorn announced. The surgery was performed by Dr. David Altchek and Dr. Riley Williams III at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. There is no timetable for his return.

Robinson has appeared in seven games this season, with averages of 5.4 ppg and 2.4 rpg, and has missed the last four games due to the injury. Currently in his 18th NBA season, Robinson has played in 1,337 games, seventh in NBA history. The Buffalo, New York native is the second-oldest active player and 14th all-time in minutes played. The Orlando Magic ’s Dwight Howard and the Denver Nuggets ’ Carmelo Anthony today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Nov. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 26.

Howard averaged 18.5 points on .531 shooting and a league-best 14.3 rebounds in leading Orlando to a 3-1 week. Posting double-doubles in all four of Orlando’s games, including a 24-point, 23-rebound effort in the Magic’s lone loss, Howard’s inside presence paced the Magic during a week that included victories over three Eastern Conference opponents. Howard’s 13.5 rpg leads the NBA and the Magic’s 10-4 record leads the East.

Anthony led the Nuggets to a 4-0 record, averaging 31.3 points on .548 shooting. Anthony also dished out 5.3 assists and pulled down 4.8 rebounds while averaging 2.8 steals. After scoring 30-plus points in three of Denver’s four games last week, Anthony now has scored 30-plus in nine of Denver’s 12 games on the season. "I would love to stay. That's my plan," Garnett said. "But it's got to be within the boundaries of winning.

"I take a lot of pride in being the face of the T'wolves. I'm pretty sure it would be weird to see me playing in another uniform.

"Everybody speaks from the newsstand, and the newsstand seems to be, 'That ain't working out for him. He needs to leave,'" Garnett said. "You hear former players speaking out. But if I was to go off what everybody else wants me to do, I'd probably be broke, out of the league, by the side of the road, living under a bridge. Al McCoy is the longtime voice of the Suns and calls the change a 'tragedy,' as it disrupts one of the NBA's best marketing tools.

"It's embarrassing that they have seen fit to prevent us in a majority of arenas from doing a professional job," said McCoy, who plans to write Commissioner David Stern. For years, Ray Allen has complained about Bruce Bowen's defensive tactics. So it came as no surprise to him that the San Antonio guard has been warned by the NBA about his habit of sliding under players while they're shooting.

"What he does on the court, he does," Allen said, "and we know, around the league, what everybody does.

"When you do something on the grand stage in New York City, everybody definitely pays attention."

Stu Jackson, NBA vice president of operations, chose not to fine Bowen, but gave him a warning after a recent incident involving Bowen and Knicks guard Steve Francis.

The frustration behind Ben Wallace's insubordination Saturday night has been brewing since the first week of training camp, according to the Chicago Tribune.

According to league and Bulls sources, Wallace has felt unfairly singled out by team rules that have taken away his pregame music, his headband and his tape-free ankles.

Sources said Wallace became upset early in training camp when Skiles enforced a team rule to tape ankles. Wallace never taped his ankles when he played for Detroit.

General manager John Paxson is to talk Monday after practice about Wallace's breaking a team rule by wearing a headband in Saturday's victory over the Knicks. However, Wallace is expected to miss practice because he needs an MRI on his right wrist and fingers after injuring them in the second quarter in New York.

What annoyed Wallace, a source close to the player said, is that he wasn't informed of the no-headband rule until after he signed his four-year, $60 million free-agent deal.

Bulls management considers itself to have minimal rules. Most just seem to have rubbed Wallace the wrong way, which could be manifesting itself in his uneven play.

According to the Tribune, Wallace might get more touches in an attempt to jump-start his defensive play. [READ]

It appears as if Bob Hill's patience with his struggling bench is running short. And it also appears as if the bench's patience with Hill's inconsistent rotations and quick hooks is also wearing thin.

"We've been doing so poorly with our bench scoring," Hill said. "When we go to our bench it just falls off and puts more pressure on Rashard (Lewis) and Ray (Allen). That's a problem. We've got to figure out how to get some points. There is no help for the first group."

When told of Hill's comments, two members of the bench retorted that some of the responsibility may also lie with Hill and his inconsistent playing rotations. One player said privately that the reserves are busy looking back at the bench waiting to get pulled for the slightest miscue. It has put pressure on the reserves to perform immediately.

"I can't say that I speak for everybody but I know I speak for a few people," guard Damien Wilkins said. "I say he needs to develop a little bit more trust in us. It seems like his leash is so short with everybody on the bench. If he developed a little more trust in us I say we would be able to play with a little bit more confidence. But it seems like to me, we're all just out there thinking and not really knowing what to do." [READ]
